Nintendo fans that seem to hate the 3DS? "It's just a gimmick" discussion [roundtable]

Now that the 3DS is out, and I've seen it for myself. (Though I haven't seen most of what it has to offer yet, I'll be seeing that this Friday when my friend brings over hers with SSFIV.) I thought we would talk about those who are skeptical about the 3DS... our fellow Nintendo fans that seem to cry out, 'It's just a gimmick!' and don't feel the same way most of us do about the system.

It seems like the 3DS is facing the same problems the Wii and DS had during their launches. Both the DS and Wii were called gimmicks, but yet they both held up and are two of the highest selling consoles/handhelds of all time... yet... people seem to not remember that.

I was watching T.V. with my friend the other day, the launch day of the 3DS, and a commercial for it came on. I started talking about the capabilities of the system and my excitement for it... and for some reason, he became hostile... angry... and I have no idea why, because he's a huge Nintendo fan like I am...

What is it with this hostility towards the 3DS?

Is it the price? The time of launch?

I'm not sure if you guys have met anyone who has this unwarranted hatred towards the system, but I've seen at least two cases, and I've seen a few on the gamespot forums, but those are usually self-explanatory.... though there are still some from Nintendo fans.

Is it true what I've heard? That the French can't multitask and listen to a podcast while working or wasting time on their computer?

This "3D is optional" business makes no sense. You could make the pointer optional in a lightgun shooter and allow the stick to be used and Mario 64 released with D-pad controls, technically you can play those games that way, it's still not the way it's supposed to be played and you're missing the point.
I think it's a valid concern. It's true that stereoscopy can enhance a 3D platformer, regardless, but Nintendo might not push things far enough to make it uncomfortable for those who are playing in 2D, so we might never see challenges like the example I used earlier: jumping between small platforms in mid-air. Just like the Motion Plus usage in Zelda might not be as demanding as it could because Nintendo wants to enable people who aren't as skilled at motion control to play through the game.

That game was... uncharacteristic, in many ways.

@Zero

I would've liked to hear Simba on the podcast.

Umm....guys? I'm not feelin the 3DS. I was expecting to be wowed like everyone else has been but...yeah, disappointing. Maybe I will let it simmer for awhile, glad I didn't buy one....yet.

@Pandareus But you're Canadian, that's basically the same thing.

Hmm, on a random side note, I'm hearing a SSFIV 3D commercial playing from my aunt's room while typing this. Or at least, while starting to type this.

@Marsh It's ok, in reality there isn't a super lot to be wow'ed about... yet. I bought it because I wanted to be in from day one and I'm liking the 3D effects and the games I have and the features, but I'm also probably going to be playing more DS than 3DS over the upcoming months, at least until some more 3DS software hits.
