Pokémon Black Version Review (Nintendo DS) (8.7)  by

NOTE: This thread is for discussion of both Black and White.

Unless there is and I missed it.

I've gotten tons of hours on this thing! Probably cause it continues to count play time even when you've got the DS closed in sleep mode, but still!

How's your Pokedex? What was your starter? Hardest gym? Fight any battles online? Do any trades?! What version did you get?!?!?!?!

Favorite city so far? You experience a critical capture yet? Pick up your Victini? Looking forward to rated battles on the 30th? Relieved that there's no calls from Joey?!

I've got a few questions of my own:

1. Aside from trading/transferring, can you run across older Pokemon, or are they all Gen V? I actually like Gen V, feels like original Pokemon to me again, aside from a few. (Fucking Druddigon looks stupid!)

2. Are shinies as hard to come by as I heard for the other versions? Don't think I've ever run across one.

3. Wouldn't a Pokemon MMO end the world? The world map could be all the regions from all 5 generations, basically being the main game and 4 expansions right out the bat... You'd play as trainers, and could directly control your Pokemon in combat, going to a more RTS style for multi-battles, or even turn-based if you chose that method! PvP would be battling other players, PvE would be battling and capturing wild Pokemon, and end-game could be earning badges and fighting real players in the Pokemon League! hfiefhwifhiwlurhweirhwuileh I've been repeating this same idea for like 11 years now!

Anyhow, here's where I'm at, playing almost non-stop: 7 badges, 101 Pokemon seen, 63 captured, Snivy was starter, hardest gym was the bug one, which I still beat almost exclusively using Snivy (Forget his second form's name, since I nickname my Pokeymans.) and was proud of that, since Bug Bite hurts like a bastard! My highest level Pokemon is currently Simipour, who is much more powerful than I would have initially thought, as I had only started putting her first to take advantage of my Amulet Coin for double money against trainers.

I've already got a certain legendary from a certain cave that I remembered after I learned a certain ability. (Trying to keep spoilers, what little there are for Pokemon, to a minimum.)

I think the story, so far, beats the crap out of previous non-spinoff games. A lot more in-depth with the characters. Still pretty basic, but I feel like they're actual characters to some extent now instead of Pokemon billboards.

Loving the more cinematic feel to the game. There's an actual brief cut-scene later on in the game that's pretty sweet!

Animated sprites make it feel so much more alive.

Triple Battles are fun but a little chaotic, but rotational battles are genius and a lot of fun!

My sister was on the DP forums or something, and was able to get a whatchacallit Roroark or whatever from a trade, she used it in battle against me and I thought it was her Panpour, pretty cool Pokemon, but I still dominated her and saved the battle video! A little disappointed you can only save one at a time, is there a way to upload them?

I haven't gotten to use any of the Munna stuff with the Dream Dust yet... is that for end-game?

I haven't really gotten into a Pokemon game since Red/Blue, because they all felt very similar to Red and Blue without enough change aside from unfamiliar Pokemon, which never felt quite as good as the originals to me, nostalgia and all that. I did enjoy Diamond/Pearl, and even beat them, but I don't remember being enthralled with them like I was with Black, which is the version I got. Nintendo did me good!

I grabbed my Victini the other day and he took quite a few Ultra Balls to catch, as I currently only have one Pokemon with any status effects. Love the battle music for fighting Legendaries! It's almost tribal, very much gets you into the mood.

Got my first (and so far only) critical capture on a Deerling, which I nicknamed Megabambi. Was a cool moment, and a great feature. Seems very very rare, though.

I'd go on, but I've ranted and raved enough!

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

Did you also hear my fiancee going, "Is that him talking? COOL!!!"
Haha, that was actually HER Thundurus you had. I still haven't tried it yet.

I'm really depressed, I lost my Exp. Share today. I didn't think the move Fling would really get rid of it and I didn't notice until after I saved...

Does anyone have any extras?
03/21/11, 07:08
There are two in the game! Just get the next one! (Doubt anyone uses two at once, anyhow!)

Also, don't forget that some of the post-game content includes the Royal Unova in the port city, which is a boat that allows you to fight random amounts of trainers to get some cash and fill in your Pokedex daily, the Unity Tower which I don't think is specifically post-game, wherein you trade with people from different countries and everyone you've traded with has their little character show up on a certain floor of the tower reminiscing about what you traded, when, comments on your survey selections, etc!

Also, Black City and White Forest may seem empty and a bit disappointing at first, but use the C-Gear feature if at all possible! The Entralink is fun and in my opinion pretty cool, and when using it across different versions (Still fun with the same version!) you get more people going to each, and there's quite a lot more to do at these places than meets the eye!

Also, doing missions in the Entralink unlocks temporary buffs for you to use on your group! Experience boosts, Capture Rate Boosts, money boosts, etc! You're able to use quite a few, and at will, and can replenish them!

Come the 30th, we'll be able to take advantage of the Dream World... you guys check this crap out? Looks like a lot of fun to me! You get to grow berries via a mini-game, have your own house where you can buy + place furniture and take it back to the "real" world, a share shelf where you can leave items for neighbors (People you've interacted with online!) or set them up for trade, etc. You can find rare Pokemon with Dream World abilities they wouldn't normally have, and a crapton more.

I thought the post-game stuff was a little disappointing at first, since Heart Gold/Soul Silver had 16 freakin' badges, but it's definitely more than meets the eye!

Maybe some of these features aren't brand new to the series, I'm not sure, my last Pokemon game was Diamond, and prior to that, 10 minutes of the original Gold, before that, about 600 years of Red/Blue/Yellow and even Green!

I'm really excited to try all this stuff out, and cannot WAIT for it to unlock!

P.S. ploot, here's a paraphrase of your character on the Canada floor: "H-hey, it's me! Remember me, Paul? We traded! Zeus and Cleffa (That's what was in my egg!) ...Have you ever been to Ontario? You should visit sometime, it's a lot of fun! Well, see you around, hyuck-hyuck!(sic)"

Thought the hyuck-hyuck was a great touch!

All the post-game stuff sounds really engrossing. There is a surprisingly large amount of content in these games. I mean, this franchise has been known for that of course, but I dunno. Black/White seems to really have upped the ante.

Gah, I need more time to play! I've only beaten the 5th Gym, and am now working my way through Twist Mountain or whatever it's called. I'm making progress, but it's slow & steady for me...
03/21/11, 13:24
I keep thinking to myself as I play "Man, I wish it had as much post-game content as Heart Gold supposedly did!"

Then I end up doing new crap for like 4-5 hours straight and forgetting what time it is, not even having enough time to try some features out!

Lots of the little story elements continue post-game, the world doesn't just stand still. Love that! Best of all, you go out and find the story bits, they're not forced on you, so it happens spontaneously, which makes re-exploration really satisfying!

I can't seem to find a lot of these things you're finding, Xbob! Unity Tower is where?!
I am very much enjoying the post-game though. Fiancee and I used the Entralink quite a bit yesterday.

And, see? Even my Pokemon self thinks the NW gathering should have been in Windsor! Hyuk-hyuk!

@Xbob42

Well said. While I haven't been too envolved with the post game content yet since I'm still training and evolving some pokemon, I liked that the safe file continues instead of time-warping back before fighting the Elite Four.

So many awesome pokemon this generation. Which six do I choose.....

Only becomes available after your first international trade! So far the only thing there is a floor for each country with NPC versions of each person you've traded with, but there's thought to be some secrets to it.

Be sure to talk to everyone, everywhere, lots of little bits only open up once you've come in contact with folks.

Use Surf anywhere you can! Be sure to re-explore EVERYTHING.

There's a few small parts where you can't find an item or two due to the season, but other than that, all the major stuff is found by exploration, even in maze-like areas that seem confusing!

As an aside, is everybody on the Global Trading System fucking retarded, or am I just missing something here? Reshiroms and Zekroms seem to be "currency" you use to purchase EVERY GODDAMN POKEMON. I wouldn't even mind trading mine if I could trade for more to continue trading... but to get another everyone wants a RESHIROM FOR MY RESHIROM.

The hell's going on here? I can understand unbalanced trades, but this is ridiculous! I've been able to make like 3 legit trades. And why do so many people want impossible (to me) Pokemon? How do I get [x] legendary, which is unbreedable, under level 9?! Is everyone just trolling? It can't be, cause EVERYONE is doing it!

I can understand trading a ditto for a ditto from a different country to enhance Shiny chances, but the rest is nonsense!

@Xbob42

Maybe people are using cheat devices to get those under-leveled legendaries? I honestly wouldn't be surprised...
03/23/11, 16:12
That's why when I want a Pokemon through GTS, I'll offer up a slightly rare Pokemon myself and ask for whatever I'm looking for at a reasonable level. It's worked 3/3 times to far, and looking up those Pokemon I wanted, I would of otherwise had to have traded a Reshiram or something around level 100. : I

Tons of people use that service, so there will be other people looking for fair trades.
03/23/11, 19:47
Thing is, the Pokemon I want aren't in my Pokedex, so I can't search for them either way, which is one of the stupidest ideas for a trading system I've ever heard of in my entire life, it forces me to do wi-fi trades with people on Pokemon boards, which is way more work than I'm willing to put in for a Mewtwo or a Scyther or what have you.

The GTS needs fixing, badly.
03/24/11, 03:48
Well, I'm getting close to the end. Kinda. I feel like I'm getting up to the part where I'm supposed to battle (and capture) the legendary featured on the box art.

I just thought I'd bump this, since it's kind of the unofficial/official Black and White thread.

I got this game yesterday, and I'm playing it an unhealthy amount. I've just had so much other stuff going on, that when I have free time, I just want to be absorbed in Pokeland. While I'm eating breakfast, while I'm on break at work, while I eat dinner, etc. It's kind of sad, haha.

I'm running around Route 4 battling trainers and exploring a little at the moment. I feel so unequipped to fight a lot of the Pokemon in this area (mainly because I'm running around with a shitty Pansage). I'd like to get a good Maractus though. I don't even know if he's any good, but he was killing me earlier. He already had Mega Drain, and if I got him, he'd be the only one on my team with a decent Special Attack, which I'm lacking. My whole team is so stacked on Attack/Speed or Attack/Defense. Am I crazy? Is the game just structured this way? I haven't explored any of the bug options, so maybe they could fill that gap.

I'm getting too concerned about natures right now, and it's annoying. I'm so OCD about it. I think at this point I'm going to just catch more Pokemon, and if they have a nature that doesn't hurt them (like a Sandile that has a nature that boosts Sp.Atk or something), I'll use them, and worry about all that crap later. I need to just enjoy the game for now, and not look at a nature chart every 5 minutes.

Anywho, I'm really enjoying it, and it's scratching the itch quite well. I'm liking the deeper narrative, although part of me doesn't like how it disrupts the game now and then. My eyes are tired from all this DS'ing though, so I'm heading to bed! Agh.

Also, on a side note, within the last minute, I just dropped my borrowed DSfat and broke the hinge on the right. Fantastic. It still opens and closes fine, but if you jostle it, it kind of comes out of the hinge. Eek.

That's *exactly* what happened to mine! I used it as an excuse to get a DS lite.
03/31/11, 08:31
Wow, people still have the original DS? You guys are crazy. Crazy, I tell ya!

Anyway, just got to the 8th Gym, and I'm about to go through the maze-stuff they set up there. I'm worried that my monsters are a little under-powered, but... eh. I've been fine so far, so I'm not entirely worried about it.

I'm really anxious to get the Legendary, though. I feel like I'm *soooooo* close, yet... so far away at the same time. I wanna catch you, Zekrom....!
03/31/11, 15:43
Well to be fair, I'm borrowing it from a friend, and he rarely plays it. His brother mostly used it to play FF4, Golden Sun, and Chrono Trigger.

Just beat the 4th gym. I did die once against one of the trainers. I went in expecting to just demolish the trainers with Sandile and Dig, and then I get all these flying electric Pokemon! Craziness. I did die but came back with Bouldore doing most of the work with Smack Down, and Sandile taking care of Blitzles and Zebstrika. Those Volt Switches were killing me! I imagine that's a special move, because they were crushing my guys (who are a little low on the Sp.Def side).

I need to regroup a little now and get a grass, electric, and water Pokemon I can rely on. Pansage isn't cutting it for me. I'm too heavy on fire, rock, and ground right now.

Is the Relic Castle worth exploring right now at this point? I got scared away from the ghost Pokemon, even though Sandile should be able to take care of them now. I don't really have anything to take down the psychic Pokemon, but I think I could maybe get a Blitzle to take down the Sigiglyphs or whatever they are since they are flying.

It is so hard not to play this game when I have other things to do, haha.
