Pre-release Info

Well, after many years, DICE is finally coming out with a proper sequel to Battlefield 2, and they're coming out guns blazing with Call of Duty in their sites! Bad Company 2 was my first Battlefield game, and it was pretty impressive, but it was missing some of the key features of a true Battlefield game, like more players, jets, etc. Battlefield 3 is coming with everything fans of the series want and more. The PC is the lead platform, so it won't have to be watered down for the consoles like the Bad Company spin-off series, but DICE is actually going to make it all work on both the 360 and PS3 regardless.

With the future of Call of Duty up in the air at the moment with Treyarch having shipped Black Ops and out of the picture until 2012 at least, and Infinity Ward in shambles after the mass exodus, we just don't know what we're going to get from the 2011 Call of Duty game, so it seems to be the perfect time for Battlefield to come in and take the FPS crown. I'll admit that I may like the more arcade style of Call of Duty a bit more, but with the formula staying relatively the same all these years, I am starting to get a bit fatigued by it, so I may prefer a change of pace with Battlefield this year, esp. if the next Call of Duty is sub-par.

There hasn't been to much info on Battlefield 3 so far, but what little there is has me very excited. I can't wait to see what true, large scale, Battlefield style warfare is really like.

So far we have this teaser:

And here are some stills from that teaser so that you can get a better look at the all new engine DICE is using for this game, Frostbite 2:

Mmm mmm mmm! Just think, the game is still in development too, so the graphics can only improve from here, now just imagine how much better everything will look upon release! The game is currently slated for a fall release of this year, so that it can go toe-to-toe with Call of Duty, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised, or upset if it got pushed back a bit since DICE has quite a bit on their table at the moment, and it's going to take a lot of work to get this all to run on the consoles.

Here's some information from an issue of Game Informer on the game:

-Aiming for CY Q4 2011 release
-Concept for BF3 has been in the works for years, waiting on proper tech to seamlessly come together
-Frostbite 2.0 is the culmination of this tech, entirely re-written
-Lighting sounds neat, one "probe" contains more lighting information than an entire BFBC2 level.
-Level destruction is going to be "believable" but basically everything is destructible.
-Character animations powered by ANT, what EA Sports uses.
-AI characters and multiplayer characters have different animation sets
-No more "gliding" animations that look off, animation realism is a focus
-Captured their own war audios (bullets, tanks, helicopters, etc) at different distances to ensure realism
-Better audio cues for certain actions, more easily able to listen for threats
-Plan on better, more immediate post release content
-More unlocks than BFBC2
-Dice trying to find a good balance between customization of your character and not having "pink rabbit hat(s)"
-4 classes
-Will talk about squads "later"
-Looking into a theater mode but can't talk about it
-Will have co-op
-There will be a kill-cam but it can be turned off
-BF3's team is almost twice as big as the team for BFBC2
-They want the pacing of the single player mode to be balanced, with highs and lows. Makes the comparison to a song vs a guitar solo.
-Part of the single player mode takes place in Sulaymaniyah - Iraqi Kurdistan.
-"Fuck" will be used often, so M rated for sure
-There will be an earthquake in a level. The destruction sounds very impressive. 7 story building collapses, looks very well done
-Significant narrative that goes with the SP mode
-More than one setting, you're not in the middle east for the whole game
-PC version is lead version
-Why 64 players for PC only? No complaints from the console crowd.
-No mod tools at release. Maybe none down the line either. Frostbite 2.0 is complex and mods tools would have to be dumbed down, so does Dice really want to put their time to that or would it be better spent elsewhere?
-Original story, not based on Bad Company at all.

Here's a link to the Game Informer scans if you want to read the whole story

It's all very interesting stuff, and DICE's claim of it being a next generation game, on current generation hardware seems quite accurate.

The game is getting a full reveal this week at GDC, so expect another trailer, and more news soon.

So, this is the official Battlefield 3 coverage thread, so if you find any news post it here. If a new trailer is released post it here. If you find a cool interview post it here. Let's keep this thread updated with all the news of the game as we prepare for deploymen to the third Battlefield!

Game is amazing so far. Well the multiplayer at least, the singleplayer, which I played a few missions of, is fun, but no where near as awesome as online. As stupid as CoD's campaigns are with them being so over-the-top, at least they're entertaining blockbusters, but here, BF3's just feels like a toned down CoD, and it doesn't really work, esp. when I hear the game isn't any longer than the standard CoD, so that at least there would be pacing. With CoD at least those five hours are jam-packed with excitement.

I'll be playing this all day tomorrow though (aside from the few hours I need to go to work that is).

@missypissy
You're saying MW2 wasn't good so I guess your opinion doesn't really matter.

I preordered the game for PS3 earlier today and there was apparently a midnight launch going on but fuck that. They also open at 10am for me to get it but I'll get it later. Won't have any good chance to play it tomorrow unless it's a for a short time, and with headphones since I have class til 10:30pm.

Won't bother with PC version til I get the shit I need. At least the ridiculous size of my TV and sound system will make up for it. Any day I'd get 360 version but I'll take the free online, better controller, and HD install pack (not enough room on 360).

I can't wait to play more tonight. I would play with you guys, but for the most part I play with my two buddies from college, and it might be weird to combine the groups. Universes colliding and whatnot. /georgecostanza

Not sure that applies for video games and it's WORLD'S colliding... and it was more Kramer's thing since he mentions it first...

:P

Ah I just remember George giving his big speech about "relationship George" and "independent George," haha.

Ugh, dealing with Origin was a little frustrating, but above all, it really just looks like there needs to be more servers. We had a really hard time getting into decent sized games. The Quick Match let us down practically every time.

It's weird. I had no problem getting into games in the Beta. I only had problems with the actual game crashing and being glitchy. NOW, I have a hard time getting into games (at least in a party of 3 people), but once I'm in the game, it's incredibly solid.

I was driving a tank with a friend of mine and I saw an enemy peaking over the roof of a short building right in front of me. I shoot the corner of the building, and the whole fucking building just collapses right in front of our eyes. We couldn't have had a better view of it. Absolutely incredible.

The game is awesome, but damn I really need to build myself a desktop. My laptop just doesn't cut it anymore, time to go full PC gamer properly.

I would also be someone who follows the separate worlds theory as I don't really want my IRL friends to know about my online persona. Even though plenty of people post online these days, it just seems weird to mix the two to me.

@Shadowlink
Wow he looks way too much like the Scout from TF2, especially in that second panel.

So the game's pretty awesome, but like Black Ops before it, it's waaaaaaaaay too staged. These FPS games are feeling WAY too "lead you by the hand" now, it's ridiculous. They're basically on-rails. The visuals are fuckin' retarded good, even on PS3. I am scared just thinking of how it'd look maxed out on a PC. I really wanna upgrade my computer now more than ever. Even my brother who basically hates FPS games was impressed by the presentation of this game. He's also a graphics whore funnily enough, so I'm not surprised he was quite taken by the game.

So I did find the analog controls really frustrating and I'm surprised since I found the beta quite enjoyable. Did they something mess with the aiming somehow? It seems way harder for me to hit anything now. It was a problem in SP and MP.

And yeah I tried MP and it was pretty fun. The DA aiming is killing it for me though. I really need my PC version ASAP. Sigh...

But yeah, very impressive graphics and presentation, probably even better than RAGE, but the game is leading me by the hand way too much. I guess that's the way of triple A FPS games nowadays....

Edit: The sound was just ridiculous even with headphones on. I can't wait to play it tomorrow with 5.1. The beta sounded fucking RIDICULOUS with 5.1 sound. It sounded like real gunfire coming out of my fuckin' sound system. Can't wait to hear the campaign with it.

I haven't really delved into the SP much. I want to play it purely for the visuals, haha, because the gameplay is kind of the opposite of why I like BF games.

I have everything on Ultra except for texture quality and it looks pretty stunning. I think the difference between this and Rage is that Rage takes a better screenshot, but BF3 looks better in motion. My jaw dropped when a building collapsed in front of me. In multiplayer no less. Just freakin awesome.
10/26/11, 17:20
lol@Battlefield single-player.

Pretend it's not there, play multiplayer, call it a day.

And that's coming from someone who's not even playing it!
10/26/11, 17:45
@Xbob42

Yeah I'm feeling this as well; I'll finish the story out of curiosity, and then never touch it again (well maybe one more time when I set up my rig), and then it's just multiplayer for me. Haven't tried the co-op yet, too bad there's only six missions (for now at least, I'm sure DICE will include more in DLC map packs), but you can actually unlock weapons for multiplayer through co-op, so that's cool.

Oh and Xbob, when the game does come to Steam, you really do need to get it. You'll love it I'm sure. Most of the issues you had a problem with, aren't even really something worth mentioning; Battlelog runs fine, and the people bitching about it are making a bigger deal than they should be (esp. when it can be improved), vehicle health regen can be turned off, etc.

I need my spotter for when I need to snipe some bitches with RPGs!

Oh and I blew a jet up with a tank. Quite a satisfying feeling.
10/26/11, 19:21
Yeah with these kinds of games, if I play the single player all the way through, it's basically just to see spectacles that I can't see in the multiplayer.
10/26/11, 19:30
@Xbob42
Yeah stupid me playing something they put years of work into!
10/26/11, 22:14
I'm Griptor on Battlelog and Origin if any of you wanna play sometime.

Playing on PC.
10/26/11, 22:16
I was playing the Campaign. I'm basically playing it purely because it looks awesome. Other than that? I feel like it's a lot of waiting around and following. That, and despite how cool everything looks, I can never fucking see what it is I'm supposed to shoot. There's always smoke and shit everywhere. In multiplayer, it's not as bad because you can spot out enemies to teammates, and blow apart buildings if they're in the way....but when I'm in a room with 6 enemies on one side, it's frustrating.

Multiplayer is a blast though. I had a fun time with it tonight even though it was just me playing. Not as fun by myself, but much easier to get into a game. The freaking Rush map with the parachute drop??? I nearly shat myself.
10/27/11, 06:28
Yeah Damavand Peak is all sorts of awesome in Rush.
10/27/11, 07:02
I beat the campaign last night. Apart from a few good missions, gameplay wise it lacks quite a bit. There's nothing new, nothing exciting, and it's very scripted.

But it looks absolutely fantastic...my jaw dropped more than just a few times. The lighting is incredible. And the HUD effects.
10/27/11, 19:50
I beat the campaign last night too. Good, but nothing special, and it borrows quite liberally from CoD4, Black Ops, and even a nice dose of MW2. Multiplayer is the real standout of course (as it should be given that it's Battlefield), but it still would have been nice for them to put more care and love into the campaign.

I should try out co-op next.

They put years of work into the Subspace Emissary, too, doesn't mean it's a good idea to play it...

@Xbob42
What was wrong with SSE? It was fun.

Btw, the analog controls suck a dick in this game. Reminds me of Killzone 2.
