Pre-release Info

Well, after many years, DICE is finally coming out with a proper sequel to Battlefield 2, and they're coming out guns blazing with Call of Duty in their sites! Bad Company 2 was my first Battlefield game, and it was pretty impressive, but it was missing some of the key features of a true Battlefield game, like more players, jets, etc. Battlefield 3 is coming with everything fans of the series want and more. The PC is the lead platform, so it won't have to be watered down for the consoles like the Bad Company spin-off series, but DICE is actually going to make it all work on both the 360 and PS3 regardless.

With the future of Call of Duty up in the air at the moment with Treyarch having shipped Black Ops and out of the picture until 2012 at least, and Infinity Ward in shambles after the mass exodus, we just don't know what we're going to get from the 2011 Call of Duty game, so it seems to be the perfect time for Battlefield to come in and take the FPS crown. I'll admit that I may like the more arcade style of Call of Duty a bit more, but with the formula staying relatively the same all these years, I am starting to get a bit fatigued by it, so I may prefer a change of pace with Battlefield this year, esp. if the next Call of Duty is sub-par.

There hasn't been to much info on Battlefield 3 so far, but what little there is has me very excited. I can't wait to see what true, large scale, Battlefield style warfare is really like.

So far we have this teaser:

And here are some stills from that teaser so that you can get a better look at the all new engine DICE is using for this game, Frostbite 2:

Mmm mmm mmm! Just think, the game is still in development too, so the graphics can only improve from here, now just imagine how much better everything will look upon release! The game is currently slated for a fall release of this year, so that it can go toe-to-toe with Call of Duty, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised, or upset if it got pushed back a bit since DICE has quite a bit on their table at the moment, and it's going to take a lot of work to get this all to run on the consoles.

Here's some information from an issue of Game Informer on the game:

-Aiming for CY Q4 2011 release
-Concept for BF3 has been in the works for years, waiting on proper tech to seamlessly come together
-Frostbite 2.0 is the culmination of this tech, entirely re-written
-Lighting sounds neat, one "probe" contains more lighting information than an entire BFBC2 level.
-Level destruction is going to be "believable" but basically everything is destructible.
-Character animations powered by ANT, what EA Sports uses.
-AI characters and multiplayer characters have different animation sets
-No more "gliding" animations that look off, animation realism is a focus
-Captured their own war audios (bullets, tanks, helicopters, etc) at different distances to ensure realism
-Better audio cues for certain actions, more easily able to listen for threats
-Plan on better, more immediate post release content
-More unlocks than BFBC2
-Dice trying to find a good balance between customization of your character and not having "pink rabbit hat(s)"
-4 classes
-Will talk about squads "later"
-Looking into a theater mode but can't talk about it
-Will have co-op
-There will be a kill-cam but it can be turned off
-BF3's team is almost twice as big as the team for BFBC2
-They want the pacing of the single player mode to be balanced, with highs and lows. Makes the comparison to a song vs a guitar solo.
-Part of the single player mode takes place in Sulaymaniyah - Iraqi Kurdistan.
-"Fuck" will be used often, so M rated for sure
-There will be an earthquake in a level. The destruction sounds very impressive. 7 story building collapses, looks very well done
-Significant narrative that goes with the SP mode
-More than one setting, you're not in the middle east for the whole game
-PC version is lead version
-Why 64 players for PC only? No complaints from the console crowd.
-No mod tools at release. Maybe none down the line either. Frostbite 2.0 is complex and mods tools would have to be dumbed down, so does Dice really want to put their time to that or would it be better spent elsewhere?
-Original story, not based on Bad Company at all.

Here's a link to the Game Informer scans if you want to read the whole story

It's all very interesting stuff, and DICE's claim of it being a next generation game, on current generation hardware seems quite accurate.

The game is getting a full reveal this week at GDC, so expect another trailer, and more news soon.

So, this is the official Battlefield 3 coverage thread, so if you find any news post it here. If a new trailer is released post it here. If you find a cool interview post it here. Let's keep this thread updated with all the news of the game as we prepare for deploymen to the third Battlefield!

I really can't wait to play the final version with bigger maps like Caspian Border. I'm loving it so far. I know people have complained about knifing and stuff, but I don't feel like it has really changed the game all that much (but then again, I don't do much knifing).

I've wound up turning the resolution down one notch and it still looks pretty incredible. I'm a little hard pressed to tell the difference, to be honest, since you're always running around anyway. Even when I tried putting the settings on low, the game still looked quite beautiful, although I don't know if the game actually put settings on low, or if some settings are locked. Can't wait!

Thank the fuck Christ for the PS3 version. I'm actually enjoying that version.

I don't really get how kniving works by the way. Am I just holding down the knife button by a guy? Do I have to be behind him?

Sometimes i get a crazy knifing animation, i don't think it has to be from behind either. Though usually if their is a person in front of me i'll be shooting especially if they are facing my way.

Shame the Battlelog is so rough. Makes it difficult to play with friends. Playing with a party of friends has proven difficult unless a server is practically empty. I feel some aspects are lacking that should be improved for the final release.

First thing is first, Caspian Border (you know that huge Conquest map that was shown off in that beautiful, jizz-in-your-pants trailer with the jets) will be available this weekend for PC players.

Now, here's the GTTV episode on Battlefield 3, including some more singleplayer info.

I played the map running like shit with everything down, and I was still shocked at te beauty. That map seems fuckin awesome. It's humongous and the variety in terrain and everything is extraordinary. Must get a better comp for this game.
10/08/11, 17:43
Dude. It's like, wow. Even at low settings it still looks beautiful. I'm trying to dial it down a bit (I guess some settings are still locked?) but man. 64 players running around this map, jets flying above, tanks, buildings falling over?? This is what I signed up for! Awesomesauce.

I just loaded up the beta.

The default settings ran a little over 30fps for me and it's an unbelievably good looking game.

That said, and this is a tad embarrassing, however I haven't played an online shooter in a couple years. How the hell do you tell who is on whos team? I played a game on Caspian Border and I was having a really hard time telling friend from foe. Maybe I'm just an idiot.

This game and RAGE are pretty neck and neck though I'd still give the edge to RAGE thanks to the ridiculous amount of detail in the world.

@carlosrox

I don't think so. At least, not technically. Of course, the technical aspect isn't everything where visuals are concerned, but still...BF3 looks leagues better.
10/09/11, 03:04
@Oldmanwinter Your teammates should have blue names over them and enemies orange names. You have to hover over them first though, I think.

From what I've seen, BF3 too me is visually more appealing. Ever since Caspian Boarder has been released on the beta I've had troubles staying in a game, i get an error that says I've been kicked by an admin. I'm sure this isn't' the case. Thinking it's a server side issue that may eventually be fixed. Looking on the BF3 forum i'm not the only person experiencing this issue. Never had any problems like this on metro map.

I also found this a little tricky in my first few games. You can see red (enemy) or blue/green (friendly) markers on players heads. No marker? Likely an enemy. Markers on enemy's appear when they have taken a bullet or when firing, i'm not sure if this is entirely the case but i figure it's something like that.

I don't know if you've played BC2, but what you really need to try to do is "spot" enemies, which you can do by pressing Q. It'll put a little orange triangle above guys, and if everyone does that, then it's really helpful to figure out enemy positions.
10/09/11, 05:10
Maybe it was a setting from the server I was on. I swear to god though there was no visible indicator of who was on who's team.

Regardless 64 people in a massive, fully destructible environment with the best graphics I've ever seen was pretty amazing. This is definitely the next evolution of the fps. COD is going to look silly if they release another MW2.
10/09/11, 05:12
I loooved Conquest in BC2. Having that, with 64 player online, and buildings falling down even more than in BC2, with jets? Very fun. Can't wait to play it with my friends.
10/09/11, 05:24
Just imagine what this map (and others) will look like then the full game releases, and you can turn things up to Ultra, and the terrain can deform which has been turned off for the beta.

Also, yes, there are connection issues, like erroneous kicked by admin messages, which is why this map was opened up for beta testing. I myself got into a really, super laggy game last night.

I also got to fly a few jets, which I didn't crash when trying to take off! I didn't really know how to fly very well after that, and kept getting shot down, but still, at least I didn't crash!

@casper884
BF3 isn't a quarter as detailed or artistically designed as RAGE. So no.
10/09/11, 08:14
@carlosrox

Like I said, tech isn't everything when it comes to the visual representation of a game. But technically, BF3 is graphically superior in just about every way; the globally illuminated lighting, the deferred shading, the 'ANT' animations, the physics...it really is the new 'Crysis' in terms of technical accomplishments.

Of course, you're allowed to have your own opinion about which art style is better, but I think you are severely undermining BF3's graphics by comparing them to RAGE's.
10/09/11, 10:03
@carlosrox I don't even care about BF3, but at least it's not full of shitty N64-era textures. And if you think it's not, I can go take about 400 screenshots of them right now for you.
10/09/11, 11:58
@Xbob42
So what's that have to with how AMAZING the game looks? Saying it has a lot of low to mid res textures means fuck all to me. It's fucking astounding regardless. I could take pics of the breathtaking visuals in the game too. By that logic I can hunt for BF3's weaknesses and exploit them too. Again, the game is not nearly as detailed or varied, of course it's not gonna have the lower resolution textures that RAGE has. And for every low res texture there are incredibly high-res and well done textures. Calling the game out for low-res textures is hilarious, since that argument goes out the window due to the level of detail, polish, art, and work put into it. It is so moot and so retarded.

If every game could look as good as RAGE but they resorted to "N64" textures, I wish every game would do the same. RAGE looks better (yes, it is subjective of course since many people including me will say WW and SS look beautiful even next to RAGE and BF3) than mostly every game out there with BF3 being its main competition right now. It's a pretty even match as they focus on different things, but I think RAGE is better since it's much better artistically and detail wise.

@casper884
I think you are severely undermining RAGE's graphics by comparing them to BF3's. Works both ways :) Seriously though. I didn't realize you were referring to straight tech. If that's the argument, then I probably agree with you. But there's more to good graphics than just good tech, which is what I'm arguing. And regardless of people bitching about the game not working/running well, RAGE has some amazing tech behind it. It's freakin' John Carmack.
