Pre-release Info

Well, after many years, DICE is finally coming out with a proper sequel to Battlefield 2, and they're coming out guns blazing with Call of Duty in their sites! Bad Company 2 was my first Battlefield game, and it was pretty impressive, but it was missing some of the key features of a true Battlefield game, like more players, jets, etc. Battlefield 3 is coming with everything fans of the series want and more. The PC is the lead platform, so it won't have to be watered down for the consoles like the Bad Company spin-off series, but DICE is actually going to make it all work on both the 360 and PS3 regardless.

With the future of Call of Duty up in the air at the moment with Treyarch having shipped Black Ops and out of the picture until 2012 at least, and Infinity Ward in shambles after the mass exodus, we just don't know what we're going to get from the 2011 Call of Duty game, so it seems to be the perfect time for Battlefield to come in and take the FPS crown. I'll admit that I may like the more arcade style of Call of Duty a bit more, but with the formula staying relatively the same all these years, I am starting to get a bit fatigued by it, so I may prefer a change of pace with Battlefield this year, esp. if the next Call of Duty is sub-par.

There hasn't been to much info on Battlefield 3 so far, but what little there is has me very excited. I can't wait to see what true, large scale, Battlefield style warfare is really like.

So far we have this teaser:

And here are some stills from that teaser so that you can get a better look at the all new engine DICE is using for this game, Frostbite 2:

Mmm mmm mmm! Just think, the game is still in development too, so the graphics can only improve from here, now just imagine how much better everything will look upon release! The game is currently slated for a fall release of this year, so that it can go toe-to-toe with Call of Duty, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised, or upset if it got pushed back a bit since DICE has quite a bit on their table at the moment, and it's going to take a lot of work to get this all to run on the consoles.

Here's some information from an issue of Game Informer on the game:

-Aiming for CY Q4 2011 release
-Concept for BF3 has been in the works for years, waiting on proper tech to seamlessly come together
-Frostbite 2.0 is the culmination of this tech, entirely re-written
-Lighting sounds neat, one "probe" contains more lighting information than an entire BFBC2 level.
-Level destruction is going to be "believable" but basically everything is destructible.
-Character animations powered by ANT, what EA Sports uses.
-AI characters and multiplayer characters have different animation sets
-No more "gliding" animations that look off, animation realism is a focus
-Captured their own war audios (bullets, tanks, helicopters, etc) at different distances to ensure realism
-Better audio cues for certain actions, more easily able to listen for threats
-Plan on better, more immediate post release content
-More unlocks than BFBC2
-Dice trying to find a good balance between customization of your character and not having "pink rabbit hat(s)"
-4 classes
-Will talk about squads "later"
-Looking into a theater mode but can't talk about it
-Will have co-op
-There will be a kill-cam but it can be turned off
-BF3's team is almost twice as big as the team for BFBC2
-They want the pacing of the single player mode to be balanced, with highs and lows. Makes the comparison to a song vs a guitar solo.
-Part of the single player mode takes place in Sulaymaniyah - Iraqi Kurdistan.
-"Fuck" will be used often, so M rated for sure
-There will be an earthquake in a level. The destruction sounds very impressive. 7 story building collapses, looks very well done
-Significant narrative that goes with the SP mode
-More than one setting, you're not in the middle east for the whole game
-PC version is lead version
-Why 64 players for PC only? No complaints from the console crowd.
-No mod tools at release. Maybe none down the line either. Frostbite 2.0 is complex and mods tools would have to be dumbed down, so does Dice really want to put their time to that or would it be better spent elsewhere?
-Original story, not based on Bad Company at all.

Here's a link to the Game Informer scans if you want to read the whole story

It's all very interesting stuff, and DICE's claim of it being a next generation game, on current generation hardware seems quite accurate.

The game is getting a full reveal this week at GDC, so expect another trailer, and more news soon.

So, this is the official Battlefield 3 coverage thread, so if you find any news post it here. If a new trailer is released post it here. If you find a cool interview post it here. Let's keep this thread updated with all the news of the game as we prepare for deploymen to the third Battlefield!

I was pretty excited about Battlefield 3 until I realized that it was Battlefield 3 and not Battlefield: Bad Company 3.

I'm pretty late to the party with the franchise and only just recently finished the Bad Company 1 single-player campaign. I loved, loved, LOVED the light-hearted take on the modern combat scenario. It reminded me of the George Clooney film Three Kings, in that it was a serious setting but a funny script and cast.

I also love the semi-open world feel of Bad Company, along with the vehicles. It makes the games feel far more organic and free-form than what is essentially a scripted corridor shooter in the CoD franchise.

I respect what "serious" modern-combat shooters like CoD: Modern Warfare are trying to do, but somewhere along the line I grew weary of the overburdened and grave tone of it all. The tech/mechanics in these FPSs is freakin' fantastic, but I just can't stand the jar-head, "Who ya!" vibe any more.

Anyway, I've still got my eye on Battlefield 3. The screenshots look great, etc. I just hope the landscapes remain open, allowing for several lines of attack (sneak, Rambo, vehicle combat) and that it doesn't take itself so seriously.

The Battlefield series is way more open than the Bad Company series, it's just you don't see it at all in these shots.

I'll be getting this game for the PC. Just waiting until we get closer to launch before I upgrade the rest of my computer to match this (CPU, MoBo, OS) since I won't be needing anything new until then.

Here's a new clip of gameplay, and my my this game sure looks pretty in motion!

There's also an article of the game over at IGN and a more in depth article of the full demo level shown to the press at DualShockers.

Man, it really sucks having to game on a laptop for PC titles, as there's no way my dinky little machine will be able to play this at max settings.

I see someone hasn't played the original Battlefield games much!

Bad Company 2 is great, but it is absolute dog shit compared to Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield 2.

The Battlefield 1942 wake island DEMO alone probably has more hours registered for me than any other FPS ever.

Everything looks FANTASTIC, EXCEPT the running animation with the gun. It's shitty. Having said that I'm pretty damn sure it'll get fixed by the time comes out.
03/02/11, 13:41
Oh my tits...that looks incredible.
03/02/11, 20:34
Probably the best sound I've ever heard in a game.
03/03/11, 04:01
And I'll be upgrading my PC for this game now. Holy shit was that gameplay amazing. My friend is talking about it to me on MSN, and that getting-knocked-on-your-ass part, with the explosion, wasn't scripted :o

The lighting is just insane. Absolutely incredible to look at in motion.
03/03/11, 04:12
Course it wasn't! The main Battlefield series has always been about absolutely crazy shit happening naturally!

It has to be able to happen naturally, when you're playing with 64 players on a single map!
03/03/11, 04:19
Really curious to see how it'll look on the 360. My friends and I love BC2. My two friends played the shit out of the older games, but BC2 was my first Battlefield game. I think I mainly just love it because of its slower pace (compared to CoD which is REALLY fast to me), the length of the matches, and the fact that I can blow apart buildings. I can't wait for BF3 now.
03/03/11, 04:35
From everything I know about Battlefield, I'd vehemently recommend against getting the 360 version. I could be wrong, but...

1. Battlefield is about massive maps. Pinpoint accuracy is an absolute must for long distance combat.

2. Battlefield is about huge numbers of players. It's supposed to feel like a huge war, with vehicles and soldiers absolutely everywhere. To my knowledge, the 360 is incapable of supporting the (In my opinion only way to play Battlefield games.) 64 players per server.

3. Battlefield is hugely about cooperation. 32 random people per team working together are how victories are earned. Very rarely, if ever, does a lone wolf or a duo accomplish much if they're doing their own thing without working together. Not saying that the PC versions of games have incredibly communities, or that the Live community is incapable of it... But I've played both, and I shudder at the thought of trying to get 31 other Live players together with me. The racial epithets alone would be astounding in their quantity.

To get the game to "flow" right for the 360, they'd have to redesign a lot of the fundamentals. And they've already stated that it's PC-first, with it being "squeezed" onto the 360 afterward, so that likely means it'll be fun, but not what you're MEANT to be playing.

But I could be wrong -- DICE has surprised me many times over the years.

From what little I've read, it seems like getting blown down like that won't happen in multiplayer. Which makes it being non-scripted a little more amazing. But I don't play BF for single player.

The destruction seems pretty out of this world. I'm so glad DICE is pushing it further and further. Red Faction 2 really made destruction something I wish more FPS games did, even Black did it well for it's time, but it just never really hit it off. And then Frostbite.
03/03/11, 05:32
Guess I'll have to settle for the inferior 360 version.

No way my laptop could handle that.
03/03/11, 05:36
@Xbob42 Well, I usually play with the same 4 people, which includes a couple guys, a girl, and her sister, and it's always a lot of fun. We have fun working together and spawning on each other in BC2. While we want to win (and probably win around half the games we play, give or take), we're not uber competitive with it. I'll be curious to see if the 360 version can handle the map sizes in BF3.

The whole fun of the game for us is just playing together...if the 360 version sucks or something, we'll probably pass on it, because we all only play on the 360. Having some buddies with me and seeing an enemy in a building, and then just DESTORYING that building is immensely satisfying, haha.

One day we just hope that they make a BF-esque Halo game where we can be controlling Scarabs and ODST'ing in from orbit or something. One day hopefully.
03/03/11, 07:31
Hot damn those are some fine looking graphics.

Personally I don't get too excited about multiplayer centered fps games anymore. I simply don't have the gaming time to devote to them. They are like MMO-lites, they take up hundreds of hours to really excel at... which is good, that's the whole point however these days give me a solid 10-15 hour shooter like Bioshock and I'm happy.

That said though holy shit that looks good.

I agree Dead Space and Doom 3 have incredible sound.

Seriously though,

@Oldmanwinter
The game's supposed to have a legit SP campaign though.

@Missy Pissy
I'll also be upgrading too.

Haha, indeed!

For now, I'll just pretend it's on his visor.

I hope there's no regenerating health!
03/03/11, 13:26
@Xbob42

Not a fan huh? Well DICE says they will weigh the options of both. I mean, on one hand regenerating health speeds the game up so you're not wasting time looking around for health, yet on the other it's not exactly as realistic, nor even as strategic. There was a segment on one of the Extra Credits videos that brought up some good points for regenerating health in games. Perhaps DICE will implement something in the middle, or maybe health that you have to manually press a key in order to heal, maybe something like Bioshock where you can stockpile med-packs, yet you have to use them yourself before you're shot to death. I didn't really like the health system in some older games like the first Call of Duty for example, really slowed things down, and would suck immensely if you were low on health right as you reached a checkpoint. Perhaps it will be something similar to GoldenEye's where you have health, yet also some sort of armour as well that you can "heal". I didn't mind the system used in BC2 though; sure it was regenerative (at least on non-hardcore servers), but it healed slowly enough to make the medics useful.
03/03/11, 13:36
I don't care about single player health regen.

But in multiplayer, I think the only time your health should ever go up is if a Medic works on you. No other time. You either fight it out until you escape or you die. Running and hiding... Looking for med kits... All of those are stupid solutions if you ask me. If you get hit... you're hit. A medic shouldn't be able to instantly pop you back to full health, either. They should be useful, but not godlike.

America's Army had a good health system. Medics weren't a dedicated class, you had to choose to be a medic in addition to your normal duties. If you got selected as one, you'd find injured teammates and take about 2-3 seconds of both of you standing still and going through a "wrapping" animation as you patched them up. Their health might go up SLIGHTLY, but more importantly, they'd stop bleeding, which would keep their health from going lower and restore their full aiming abilities..

I am of the opinion that the longer you're fighting, the harder it should get. Less and less ammo, more and more injuries.
