So maybe it's because the last rail shooter I played was Panzer Dragoon Orta on the Xbox or maybe I'm just a soulless gamer, however I'm am absolutely loving Extraction. I just beat the fifth chapter so I'm guessing I'm close to half way there and thusfar this game has been an absolute riot.

I don't get what the hate is for rail shooters if they are done this well. It tells a story in a very compelling manner and as far as narrative is concerned I think Extraction does as good of a job of it as any non rail shooter I've seen in the action genre. Sure it's kind of campy, but that's the point. Carlos might crucify me for this however honestly it's holding my attention better than the "real" Dead Space on my PC.

Did everyone else here like this or what was the consensus, because I fucking love it. Being as such are there any other rail shooters that I should pick up that are as good or close to as good as this? How is the House of the Dead game? Any other suggestions? Thoughts?

I didn't buy/play it myself, as I'm not a big fan of the genre - light gun shooters. That said, it wasn't so much that it was a bad light gun shooter (that's arguable, I've heard a range of opinions on that going from mediocre to great), as much as it was that there's already so many on Wii, particularly at the time Extraction released.

If I were to get a light gun game for Wii, the only one that caught my attention for whatever reason was RE: Darkside Chronicles. Definitely another one to check out from what I've seen/heard if you're looking for more in the genre.

(note: on the genre thing, I place DS:E and its ilk in the light gun shooter category personally; on-rail shooters are a bit different. Just had to clarify why I said that above.)

Let's get technical for a second. Dead Space Extraction is not a "rail shooter", it's in fact a "light-gun shooter". If you're looking for a good rail shooter, get Sin & Punishment 2. It's fucking nuts.
And yeah DSE is a pretty good ride. It was over a bit quickly, but it had some good substance to it. Another good light gun shooter is House of the Dead Overkill, which I prefer personally. It's easier, but it's really over the top grind-house style, I love it. Also if you like the Resident Evil series (or if you haven't played them, they're a good recap) you can try Umbrella Chronicles or Darkside Chronicles.

Extraction is a great game, but yeah.....not technically a rail shooter. If you want to play the best rail shooter ever made (in my opinion!), buy Sin and Punishment: Star Successor. You'll love it if you enjoyed Orta.

It was just a matter of unfortunate timing for Extraction, since, you know, House of the Dead: Overkill kicks the motha' fuckin' shit out of it.

I loved it too but the replay value was low. I could barely finish my second game.

Having said that I still think Dead Space and Dead Space 2 are leagues ahead. Surprised this is holding your interest so much more. But, I really think they did a fantastic job with the characters and immersion. Some of the best I've seen in any game.

I received Dead Space Extraction as a Xmas gift. I have yet to put it in the console, along with Muramasa and Sin & Punishment 2. I need to finish DKCR first. Heck, at this rate I may not even need to buy any games this year.

I got Dead Space: Extraction and House of the Dead: Overkill at the same time. On-rail-light-gun-whatever games, sure, and I love both, but they are soooooo very different in direction and gameplay that I don't care to write an essay comparing and contrasting the two.

Bottom line, I enjoy Extraction much more for being more interesting, more difficult, better looking, and being good for a few scares.

I have it in shrink wrap still... been meaning to play it with somebody.
02/10/11, 09:22
I'm surprised people find this game like, at all scary.

@Simbabbad
Nah I'd never sell it. It'd be a great game to replay one day and I plan on doing so eventually.

I bought DS:E for cheap on Wii and it was ok while it lasted. But for me, it simply lacks substance. I didn't enjoy it any more than, say, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles.

But House of the Dead: Overkill is simply a blast to play, it's just so over-the-top and cheesy in a good way. I replayed the hell out of that game because of all the unlockables and the constant action.

I enjoyed the game a lot. Liked the story, and enjoyed playing through different characters' perspectives. I like the DS Universe and was impressed by the amount of quality they put into the story. Would love for it to have lasted longer, but I guess it was appropriate enough, from the point of unearthing the Marker to the shitstorm that occurred on the Ishimura. Still haven't played DS2 though (funds prevent me from fulfilling my preorder), but I'm hoping that they incorporate whatever left over story elements from this game into DS2.

Dead Space: Extraction was good, but not great IMO. I have played better light-gun games, that is all.

Perhaps try the Resident Evil light gun games. I played the first, and it was decent. (the second one I heard had camera shaking problems).

The story was pretty good, but the gameplay was really boring at times. However, the point where you have to literally cut off the person's arm to escape was intense. The game also ended really fast.

I'd give it a 7.5/10 if I had to rate it. Nothing beats Jurassic Park (something like that, it was a light gun game where you shot dinosaurs), House of the Dead, and Time Crisis 2 in the arcades :)

I wouldn't compare light gun shooters to rail shooters, rail shooters give you character control and therefore can have a ton more depth. Heck in Orta you not only had character control but full 360 aiming!

With that said, I liked Extraction. It has surprisingly high production values, and the game itself ain't half bad either. I did stop playing around chapter 7 or 8, but only because I got into other games. I'll go back and finish it someday, probably next on my list for Wii games after I finish Trauma Team.

It's not bad, but it's a "play once and then throw away" game. The gameplay content is terrible for a lightgun shooter, it's extremely basic and dumb and has no scoring value. The pacing and cheap surprises and long pauses make it impossible to enjoy replaying a level.

It should have been a Dead Space 2 PS3 bonus from the start, it doesn't deserve much more... and they sold it at 60 bucks here. No kidding it bombed. Any sane person would sell it after being done with it.

Ahhhh, I'm going to have to disagree with you.

First off while I would never pay $60 for this, to say it's worth nothing more than a pre-order bonus for DS2 is crazy talk. The game has great production values, is voice acted by professionals and while not long is surely long enough to warrant a purchase. It should have retailed for between $20-30. Regardless it's most certainly better than most any cheap downloadable I've purchased lately.

Secondly I very much agree with your point about lacking replay value due to the way the game pans out, however I like it specifically because the narrative is the point, not scoring or leaderboards. That obviously limits it's replay value however as far as a narrative experience as a prequel to Dead Space is concerned it's excellent.

I think their is decent replay value in Dead Space: Extraction. I mean, have you tried beating the game on the hardest difficulty? Good luck :P

I can never beat rail shooters/light-gun games on their hardest difficulty. But that is what makes rail shooters/light-gun games so fun IMO, and that is pretty much why rail shooters/light gun games are one of my most favorite genres of video games- the challenge and smile you get when you finally get past a stage.

I even enjoyed Ghost Squad even though the game literally took me 4 hours to beat.

I really wish a good Time Crisis would come out for the Wii. I would buy it in an instant! (or a Virtua Cop!)

I rented it from Blockbuster tonight. I've been wanting to for a while seeing as how I don't really have any desire to buy it, and seeing as how it's a light gun game, there's probably not a lot of replay value for me, so might as well save some money.
02/12/11, 06:09
@Simbabbad

I don't deny it never should have been full retail. I said as much above. It definitely is a lot more than a simple downloadable game however.

Regardless I see your point and you play a lot more of these than me and are into scores, leaderboards and perfection more than I. Your criteria is much more refined than mine.I will however maintain as a narrative prequel to Dead Space it's a hell of a ride and I'm glad I bought it.

You honestly should have just spent the extra couple dollars and bought it. I paid like ten on Amazon.

@Oldmanwinter

Why when I'll only play it once most likely? I have a big enough backlog as it is. At least by renting it I have a deadline. I bought NMH2 back in like October or so, and I haven't even taken off the shrink wrap. Now of course the game has gone down in price since then. Heh maybe since I still have my receipt I'll just return it, and then later buy it for cheaper when I'm actually ready to play it.

I know. My backlog is like 500 games. Still though if I can buy it for ten or rent for six, I'll buy.

Yeah but what market is there? This should work the same as renting a movie, and you can't make back that production value with 10 bucks.

Well this goes back to the old DD market however this game at 20 on XBLA, PSN, Ware and Steam would have done a hell of a lot better than full retail brick and mortar. I agree it was kind of a no mans land game and full price was ridiculous.
