I'm so happy that Mustache found some fellow sportos!

Wanna make this the Official Sports Topic?
02/07/11, 00:49
The game last night was pretty good, I thought. Entertaining for the most part with some intense moments and "wow, what a monster" time here and there. My wife wanted Green Bay to win (for some reason), and they did, so she was happy. I didn't really care who won either way, but I guess its more exciting for Green Bay to tie the all-time record for Super Bowl wins with 6 with the Steelers than the Steelers to go 2 up on everyone. Rematch next year? Neato.

I made some solid dough on the pool, haha. I think I won the Halftime and Final ones (the two biggest!). At a quarter a square (10x10=25), I picked up 5 bucks, and then 10 bucks. Yesssss. I had the entire "1" column for Green Bay, except for in the event that the Steelers had something-2. They were at 21 and 31 in each of those quarters..so ca-ching!

This should be more "sports" than "the program" so I'll try to keep it to a minimum.. --How did you guys like the commercials last night? The NASCAR ones were ok, I liked them last year when they were really long though. My friends liked the "test baby" one. Looks like 2011 is the "Year of the Alien" in the movies, eh? What the F. And dogs love to do anthropomorphic things. ALL NIGHT.

How about that halftime show? Isn't Slash/Co. going to get in massive trouble? Word on the streets is that he's not allowed to play any GNR music.. Eep. (If you didn't see it for some reason, Sweet Child of Mine started up out of nowhere, and Slash rose out of the stage while playing guitar. Fergie sang part of the song..and then Usher came from the sky. I have no idea..)

@chrisbg99

Alright, most of those make sense. I can agree with a bunch of 'em. I took you for a Bears fan though for some reason. Hmm.

@CB200

I thought it was going to come down to strong individual efforts, and it pretty much did just that. The early interception returned for the TD, and that massive late Sack by Frank Zombo. I was hyping him up all night as that "little guy" that America doesn't know. Pittsburgh..seemed like they were off a step all night. What was it? Maybe they were overconfident? Maybe they thought like you and I? I thought the Steelers had it "in the bag," and they definitely didn't. Good game though.. Sure it could've been better for ya though, bud. Sorry about that..

@anandxxx

Yeah, it should be!!
02/07/11, 22:39
Hey! Why didn't anyone tell me that the O's signed Vlad Guerrero!?

NASTY!!
02/09/11, 11:24
LeBron is going into Beast Mode. If he plays like he has the past few games (hitting his jumpers) the Heat are pretty damn unstoppable.

Also if he would have been this focused in last year's playoffs then Cleveland probably makes it to the Finals. So I hope he doesn't get distracted again.
02/09/11, 11:46
I'm curious to see if LeBron can do what needs to be done in the playoffs. His biggest problem is that when the going gets tough, I've noticed that is when he tends to disappear instead of forcing his will until the end.

Also I can't wait for spring training baseball to start. Love baseball season. Following the Braves and going to the local independent minor league games. Good times.

Which didn't make sense because he single-handedly beat the Pistons (good team) one year in the playoffs.
02/09/11, 13:21
My point is, when is on he is very hard to stop. But if you stop him early on, he never seems to have that fourth quarter where he finds that next gear and takes over the game at least not in the playoffs. If he finally finds that laser like focus that great players like Jordan had and that Kobe still has the Heat could be nigh impossible to beat.
02/09/11, 13:29
Yep, and then they have Wade. He could go 0-15 the entire game and then just light up the fourth quarter.
02/09/11, 13:34
Yeah I'll give Wade that. He might not have nearly the talent of LeBron but he is capable of that.
02/09/11, 13:38
The Bowl was awesome; I was worried it'd be a blowout early on, but the Steelers at least made it interesting once Woodson went out.

It was hard for me personally, since I'm a huge Steelers fan, but I really wanted to see the Packers win. Can't have the same 3-4 franchises always winning, gets too boring. Plus Rodgers deserves it, IMO.

@anandxxx

I vote yes, this should become the Official Sports Thread. If everyone agrees, we should make it so!

ARGH. Don't remind me of that. Worst year ever. I wanted to cry that year.

And the Pistons haven't been the same since. We need to go ahead and finish blowing that team up, the cast is basically just getting by on life support ever since we downgraded from Billups to Ivo for that one year.
02/09/11, 19:43
Man, how did all of that basketball get in here? Haha, I guess thats my doing. You guys are welcome, of course, I just can't chime in. Dig it!

--Oh man, Entry List for the Budweiser Shootout just came out yesterday. I pretty much knew who was going to be there, but its just another level of officiality (how is that not a word?!) to the whole thing. I can't believe its starting already, haha. Oh well, Saturday is going to be a scream!

@Dynablade

Thats weird that you're a Steelers fan, but were somehow pulling for the Packers. I found it weird that they were favored before the game..but still FELT like the Underdog. All of their guys played really..whats the word..uh.., *blanking* ..disciplined? football. I didn't see anyone really mess anything up. I don't remember them giving up any big plays, and their defense made plays when they needed to. If you stay pretty much mistake free on offense, and you capitalize on defense, you're going to do something good.

@Mr_Mustache

I'm a pretty huge MMA fan.

Lesnar got destroyed by a guy named Cain Valasquez who is not a boxer, but like Lesnar a dominant heavyweight collegiate wrestler. The difference is unlike Lesnar Cain actually learned how to throw punches post his wrestling career. Lesnar is totally fucked if he can't get a fight to the ground, he has some of the worst hands in the heavyweight division.
02/10/11, 00:33
Man, I'm listening to all kinds of stuff on the Orioles site right now about their new lineup. My goodness, if I were another team in the AL East, I'd be pretty tentative. Their pitching is still not there, but I like this dude from Oakland. I'm pumped up pretty good right now, woo!

And I also found out that the Bills are getting new uniforms for 2011? Wow! It said they incorporate (thats not the word they used) the Bills history, and that the players like what they saw, while retaining the charging buffalo logo. Could they be rocking 70's O.J.'s again? Full-time white helmet? I fully expect the lighter true blue to return to prominence. Get out of here, Drew-Bledsoe-Patriot-Blue!

--Oh!, here it is:

The new uniforms will incorporate the team’s storied history while keeping the team’s signature charging buffalo logo. The Bills last made a change to their primary uniform prior to the 2002 season.

Exciting! (Though I HATE the new Chargers jerseys from a few years ago [current now]). A change like that would NOT be good.

@Oldmanwinter

Everytime I've seen Lesnar anywhere, be it wrestling (not the same as MMA, I'm well aware..), or something on the internet about him, or some video of him, he destroys people. Seeing that he was embarrassed was such a weird thing to believe, haha! I guess everyone has a weakness, eh?

Did you see any of that IFL stuff? I left a video back on page 1.. Its.alright I guess.
02/10/11, 01:54
@Mr_Mustache

Who was favored before the game?

If it was the Steelers I'm not surprised, but they came out flat and the Packers punched them in the mouth quickly before they knew what hit 'em. Even then, Big Ben couldn't get anything going until Woodson got injured near the end of the first half - he was givin' them hell!

If it was the Packers that were favored, I am surprised, but I had a good feeling they would at least make it interesting. I didn't expect them to be up 21-10 by the half, that's for sure!

Yeah, it was weird for me, kinda' like the 06 (I think?) NBA finals with the Pistons v. Spurs... both are my favorite teams in Basketball, play the same way (until recently - the Pistons are in a rebuild whether they want to admit it or not)... so it was hard for me to want one to win over the other. In the end I wanted the Pistons to repeat, but it just wasn't in the cards.

Actually, come to think of it, it was the same when the Cardinals played the Steelers in the bowl a couple years back, lol! I wanted Arizona to win despite being a HUGE Steelers fan, just to see the underdog win, you know? I like underdogs.

Truth be told, the three teams I wanted to make it all got eliminated (Eagles, Falcons, Saints) and my other team is in REALLY bad shape (Panthers).

There's no teams I really hate overall - this coming year even the Detroit Lions, who I've hated since Barry Sanders retired (damn shame too), I'm rooting for them to improve. I'll actually be cheering for the Lions! I think I'm losing it lol.

Only team I really am frustrated with right now is the Redskins, mainly because of how unprofessional Shanahan (sp) is being to McNabb (one of my favorite guys in the league) for whatever reason.
02/10/11, 07:28
@Dynablade

I thought the Packers were favored in the spread, which seemed weird to me. --Just checked, Green Bay by 2.5. I guess they got it right, but jeez.

The last time I followed basketball in any regard I had just gotten a free Charlotte Hornets (my favorite team in NBA Jam) hat from a box of Castrol GTX. My dog chewed it up one night while I slept towards the end of the summer. I cried.

I really wanted the Cards to win. They're my #2 team if I had to pick one, and I actually own a Cardinals jersey, too. Rob Moore, in white! I always like Aeneas Williams for some reason, too. Both of those guys are long gone, haha.

I did HORRIBLY picking the playoffs this year. The only team I was right about was Pittsburgh making the Superbowl. I did pretty stinky everywhere else. I thought the Bears were going for sure..and the Saints and Colts were going to win.. Gah.

I don't think you're losing it. Everyone likes an underdog. Can you imagine a Lions-Browns Superbowl? The nation would implode.
02/10/11, 22:43
@Mr_Mustache

The IFL was kind of retarded from the beginning. It went for team based MMA so each card was like a wrestling tournament between two teams (fyi when I say wrestling I mean collegiate style wresting, greco or freestyle, not WWE). In concept it was OK, however MMA, like boxing, tennis or any other individual sport is about the individual. Nobody cares about teams. Further the talent just wasn't there.

Pride was great before they went under. Strikeforce also has some good guys if you are looking for a non-UFC venue. Actually the strikeforce HW champ, Overeem is a fucking bad, bad man. I'd love to see him in the UFC.

Here was his last title defense

The guy is a pro level kickboxer. Who knows how he would do against a big wrestler like Lesnar however his hands and legs are sick.

And just for kicks if you want to see the most ridiculous/stupid/awesome MMA fight ever, here you go;)

Kurt Busch won the Bud Shootout tonight. Normal chains/trains of cars at Daytona are gone now after the paving, and now its pretty much cars running nose to tail with another car and thats it. Ever since I've been watching you'd expect to see about 15 guys lined up racing 15 other guys lined up. Goofy stuff. They repaved it though to its stupid fast now. Looks like a driveway!

@Oldmanwinter

You say the talent wasn't there..but if you have B-Level talent against B-Level talent, doesn't that make for an A+ matchup?

What defines good talent? I liked the team format, I thought it was pretty cool. It was actually the most I've ever cared about that stuff.
And after that, haha, I don't really care about it.

I gotta get to bed, but I'll try to check out that YouTube deal, thanks.
Well, both of them, haha.
02/13/11, 12:06
Spring Training games start on the 24th, which means the start of the season is just around the corner. I threw up a thread about Fantasy Baseball, too, if anyone would like to play. Yeah, lets play!

Is anyone watching the Gatorade Duels tomorrow on SPEED? They're on at 2pm, and should be pretty exciting. If you're on the fence about NASCAR (the last time I said that, nobody watched), these are some neat races to see. They're only 150 miles, so they go pretty quick. If you like the 1st one, theres a 2nd one right after it with totally different guys! Exciting! They set the lineup for the Daytona 500. I think you've heard of that one.

My hope is for the Packers to lose and a few days later for an asteroid to hit Green Bay, erasing it from existence.

Yes I hate the Packers THAT much.

That's pretty much how I feel about the Steelers. Mainly because I think Roethlisburger is a despicable waste of oxygen.
02/16/11, 22:40
Longshot, I know..

Did anybody catch the Daytona 500 yesterday? Any of it? The end?

20-year old Trevor Bayne won the race in only his 2nd Sprint Cup start.
Can you imagine that? He is set for LIFE in his 2nd race. Thats unbelievable.
