@-JKR-

I think he's referring to the NBA lockout now.

To answer @sirmastersephiroth's question, I don't like them. Rich players wanting more. Richer owners wanting more. One side may be more "right" than the other, but in the public's eyes, lockouts aren't good.

I'm actually referring to sports lock-outs in general. But yeah, I agree with your sentiments wholeheartedly.

Here's a an article written by Ryan Desmarais from the Celtic's Blog talking about the lock-out.

I love this quote from the article:

Desmarais said:
So why should we sympathize for either side? Why even choose a side? This is the NBA. Where showing off your lavish lifestyle happens. We watch the players enter and leave the arenas on a nightly basis wearing their Armani suits and sporting earrings, bracelets and watches that you can't look directly into because of possible loss of sight due to the sheer volume of diamonds. You have Marquis Daniels spending who knows how much money on a diamond necklace of his head. And now everyone is going to argue over wanting more money?

This comes from the same league where Latrell Sprewell told everyone that he couldn't feed his family with a $14 million contract and Patrick Ewing announced to the world during the 1999 lockout, "Sure, we make a lot of money, but we spend a lot, too."

@sirmastersephiroth

Basketball is just the worst. And celebrities/athletes are so out of touch with what its like to be "normal" people.
I haven't made $14 Million (let alone $1 Million) in my LIFE.
07/28/11, 01:29
@-JKR-You a Pittsburgh-er too, JKR? I didn't know that.

And yeah, that was one of the worst calls I've ever seen. It was like a goon referee in pro wrestling, that intentionally cheats to get a reaction from the crowd.

It wasn't as bad as this one from a few years ago:

but it was definitely worse because of when it happened and the magnitude of the game at that point.
07/28/11, 01:48
@TheBigG753

HAHA!! Did that really happen!??! I thought you were making a joke at first!
07/28/11, 01:49
Yeah, it was a Yankee game against the Blue Jays if I remember. Regular season game, so it didn't matter much.

But it was Mike Mussina on the mound, and in typical Moose fashion he went into total meltdown mode afterward (I would always beg for Torre to pull him whenever there was a blown call or an error, because his next pitch would be typically 88 mph right down the middle, haha).
07/28/11, 01:53
@-JKR-

Holy fuck that was a terrible call!!!

@Mr_Mustache

Leinart was already in Houston, though. Either way, glad he isn't coming to the Hawks though a little sad that he is still benching on my Texans. Hasselbeck going to the Titans is very interesting, though. He's now got a running game, maybe some weapons on the outside (haven't checked in with the Titans in awhile, so not sure) and probably a much better O-line than we ever gave him. I'm sure he'll be able to get that team into a Wild Card slot, figuring Manning will lead the Colts to the AFC South Champions again. Texans should be a little worried, unless someone breaks Matt (again)
07/28/11, 02:51
@missypissy

Its so tough to call right now. Theres a lot of pussyfooting around right now, but I think the teeth'll come out on Friday. Scary! I have no idea who is over/under the cap right now, but people are going to be cut and signed like crazy once that officially opens. I think now they can "agree to terms," but they can't officially sign anyone.

The Jets are pillaging free agency, and nobody cares. Stop them!
07/28/11, 11:17
Oh my gosh, you guys keeping up with this?

In the last hour (I think..) BOTH Albert Haynesworth and Chad Ochocinco have been TRADED to the PATRIOTS.

Ridiculous!
07/29/11, 01:43
And I heard Reggie Bush was taking his talents to South Beach to swim with the Dolphins? Or limp, drown, and float ashore in his case, I guess...

Sucks ass that I'm going out of town for four days, starting Friday, so all the frenzy I'll be missing out on!! :(

PS; Jets suck. I hate the coach. I hate the QB. And most of all. I hate the fans.

And Vince Young is cut, oh snap. Hopefully he gets his shit together and starts somewhere fresh and does well.

@missypissy

Dolphins are looking at YV, too. I guess they're gunnin' for Orton first, but will settle for Young.
Its craaaazy!

Vince Young has been confirmed today to move to the Eagles to back up Michael Vick.

In baseball news, the Phillies and Astros are working out a deal that includes two Phillies prospects and possibly Dominic Brown in exchange for Hunter Pence. Right now Houston is looking for a third team to get involved to give Brown to for more prospects, from what I've heard.

I'd be fine with that. I think Dominic Brown could be a great player, but if the Phillies are going all in and trying to win a World Series, then Pence absolutely makes the lineup better. Will it be THAT much of an upgrade? Time will tell. I mean, the Phillies did get shut down by the Giants last year, and that was with Jayson Werth still on the team (though in retrospect he was kind of on a downward trend).

I think I'd rather see the Phillies get Vance Worley to get involved in this trade, but apparently the Astros don't have any need for him. With our starting pitching, I think Worley is a bit more expendable than a future starting right fielder. Still, it'll be nice to keep Worley around, even if he's basically a number 5 starter by the end of the year.
07/29/11, 20:49
@PogueSquadron

Yeah, but as a #5 starter, he still has some pretty good numbers, doesn't he? He could be a solid #2 (or 1!) on the O's, haha. What in the planet. You know a whole bunch more about baseball than I do with this stuff. I mean, I've heard of guys, but I don't really know them all too well.

Football on the other hand, I know like the back of my hand. And I constantly see those while typing.

Vince Young to the Eagles. Man, they must LOVE drama. First Vick, and now this guy? I guess maybe Philadelphia is more open to troubled folk there? I'm not sure.

Man, craziness is afoot. I don't know what the Dolphins are looking for at QB, but they've apparently got Matt Moore now, recently on Carolina in their garbage pile. They're STILL looking at Kyle Orton though. WR Roy Williams to the Bears from the Cowboys after trading TE Greg Olsen to Carolina. The Broncos are looking at the recently cut Willis McGahee (wow!), and that Nnamdi Asomugha fellow is now between the Jets and Cowboys..but the Cowboys would have to cut Terrance Newman (apparently) to make him fit. And Darren Sproles (SD) replaces Reggie Bush instantly in New Orleans.

Wild and wooly! And its Friday! They can officially sign peopllllle!
07/29/11, 21:38
@PogueSquadron

I wish we (Pirates) would make a real effort and get in on the Hunter Pence train, but it's looking less and less likely. Sigh...

@TheBigG753

Yep, born and raised and sticking around because it's the best city in the world. (Well, the cities in Hawaii were pretty nice too... but...) I've been a lot of places in the world and PGH remains my personal most livable city. I love visiting a lot of others, but outside of Hawaii or Toronto, I don't think I'd want to live anywhere else. And Hawaii is just too far away, and Toronto has that crazy Canadian money to deal with, so I'll stick with here.

I was very surprised when I heard about Ocho Cinco heading to the Kool Aid Drinking Cheaters- I mean... Patriots. Very surprised indeed. But I'm sure he'll make a nice cog in their machine, like every other loudmouth player who goes there and gets brainwashed by Mr. Belichick.

"I am an integral part of this team. I must protect Tom Brady at all costs."
07/30/11, 00:27
Oh, Worley's got good stuff, but you also have to take into account that it's his first year in the big leagues. A lot of rookie pitchers have great first years, but once there's a more substantial book on them, then they kind of have to dig themselves out of a hole (for example, J.A. Haap isn't having a great year, despite a stellar rookie year). He definitely has potential.

I guess what I mean to say is, even if he's a really good pitcher, if your first three pitchers are Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels, and Cliff Lee...the fourth and fifth starters just aren't as important. On the other hand, you have Dominic Brown. I think the kid was brought up WAY too early, and now he's basically getting a lot of on the job training in the majors. It'll take a few years, but he has the potential to be a great player. WIth the way he's played up until now, he could be a great 5 tool outfielder, and those are hard to come by. That's the only reason I said that I think Brown is the less expendable between him and Worley (that is, if Brown does blossom...he IS playing okay despite his flaws in his rookie year, and I think I read he's actually producing more than Chase Utley in his rookie year)

Fortunately for the Phils, it looks like they've officially landed a deal to bring Hunter Pence to the team, by trading some prospects and a player to be named later (NOT Vance Worley or Dominic Brown). Not too shabby. Is Hunter Pence the greatest player ever? No, but he's a .300 hitter, and should help in the Phillies lineup in the 5 hole. In the past few years, the Phillies have acquired Brad Lidge, Roy Oswalt, and now Pence from Houston.

On the football side, the Eagles have acquired cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. It's a pretty exciting day around here, regardless of what comes of all of this.

Edit: I should also clarify, if it took trading Dominic Brown to get Hunter Pence, I probably would've done it in a heartbeat. Pence is what, 28? So he'll still be good for like, the next 5 years. As it turns out, looks like we'll be getting both of them.

Sweet merciful christ. Would you LOOK at this?

That's freaking incredible. Although I'd be happier about it if this particular try wasn't going to cost me a perfect round in my football tips this week. Bah.
08/07/11, 10:20
Hunter Pence last week trying to bat with a doughnut in Colorado. Hahaha! Classic.

08/11/11, 07:04
I gotta update this thread..sometime.

@Shadowlink

Yeah, that was pretty good.

@PogueSquadron

What the-- Did he know it was there? Was he trying to pull a fast one??
08/12/11, 07:19
@Mr_Mustache@Mr_Mustache Hahaha, he had absolutely no idea. You can see he basically turns to the dugout and kind of laughs. Having the donut on there wouldn't serve any purpose at all really. It would probably just screw him up. (For those not baseball inclined, the donut is used to warm up before going to the plate...I'm not sure if it even helps or if it's just a psychological thing, to make the bat feel lighter at the plate)

When asked where he was staying, Pence also jokingly said (but I think not so jokingly) "Cliff Lee's house. He even said I could use one of their cars." How awesome is that, hahaha. Apparently his first day here, Chase Utley actually picked him up and drove him around town showing him places he could go and talking about baseball and stuff. Let the man crushes continue.

The Phillies are also 12-1 since Pence joined the team. Talk about a spark plug!
08/12/11, 07:47
@PogueSquadron

12-1? Man, pretty impressive. I have no idea what thats like, haha!!

--Poguester, are you up for Fantasy Football at all? I sent Ludist a thing (a Yahoo reminder) about our league.
Maybe I should do another thread sometime soon. Hmm..

Also, did you know that Preseason football is TOMORROW?? WHAT!?
08/12/11, 07:54
Hunter Pence, along with Michael Bourne, were the last good hopes on the Astros. Then they got traded away, in typical Houston fashion, for literally no-one. Philly must really love Houston, because we might just be their best farm team...

Pre-season football was tonight and my Seahawks were on ESPN. Boy...wow. I know we "won" the game at the end, but this is not looking so good. Granted, they've had like a week of practice, but that first string did not look sharp at all. Hell, second string didn't do any better...gonna be a rough year me thinks.

Cowgirls won. TEBOW FAILED ME!!!!
