I agree. I'm rooting for Green Bay however I think Pittsburgh is going to win it. It might be close however like you said their defense is absurdly talented, their qb has been there before and is incredibly clutch down the stretch and on the whole they are just the more veteran, more talented squad.

That said go Packers!

Also there is a UFC event on tonight. I'd love to see Belfort KO Silva however I don't see that happening. Any other MMA fans here?

Listen to the podcast.

I'm torn about tomorrow's results though.
02/06/11, 03:35
I'm going to begin my 25nl adventures again soon enough. Only have about 10,000 hands there so far.

Oh yea, graph or it didn't happen:

Run bad. Run hot. Run meh.

I'm a hardcore Seattle Seahawks fan. It goes against every fiber of my being to even think about rooting for the Stealers. I will be going for the Packers all the way, especially since Seattle lost to Chicago in the divisional round.
02/06/11, 04:55
@missypissy
Nice job beating the Saints in the first round. I'm going for the Packers, but I think the Steelers will win.

My favourite sport is baseball, and though I haven't been following it as closely as I used to (I was a Montreal Expos fan), I really love the sport. I played for about 15 years.
02/06/11, 04:59
I'm going to watch the superbowl with people from my school play tomorrow. I still have no interest in sports, but I'm looking forward to the company... and the food :]

NFL Football
Tomorrow is the biggest game of the year in the sports world. Who do you guys have?

I think Pittsburgh is going to take this one. Their defense is ridiculous, and Big Ben has been here before. This is Aaron Rodgers first time at the Big Dance, so he'll be somewhere he hasn't been before. I'm not saying someone can't win it in their first shot, but the Super Bowl isn't the NFC Championship, and it certainly isn't a home game. Do we know who is wearing home colors?

I'm aware that Drew Brees won the Super Bowl last year against Peyton Manning in his first attempt (good thing, too!), but I'd put Drew Brees well above Aaron Rodgers in terms of "star power." Perhaps tomorrow may change that? Sure, that'd be cool, more power to him.

I think this'd be Pittsburgh's 7th Super Bowl victory. Wow, nasty. They already hold the record at 6; Green Bay can pull even with another victory of their own. Intense! (Or will this be their 5th? Hmm.)

NASCAR:
And the Daytona 500 is already in two weeks. What the H. Bud Shootout next Saturday night! Unbelievable.

Other sports:
Anything else you guys want to talk about. I know most of the stuff in American sports, but I don't pay attention to crappy soccer at all and I despise basketball. Uhhh, ShadowLink (right?), feel free to talk about rugby (right?) here. Lets keep it goin'!

En guarde, Monster Hunter thread! (HAHAHAHAHA, yeah right. I don't think I have 100+ pages of posts in me..)

@Oldmanwinter

Ooh! I forgot to say: I'm not really pulling for anyone, and I think an unnamed player that America is largely unfamiliar with will NEED to breakout for Green Bay to have a shot in this one. I'm talking about a Nickel Corner taking one back for a TD, and also getting a key Corner Blitz Sack or something.

See! We can talk about sports here! It feels weird! (and cool!)

MMA- I'm not really a fan, no, but I am familiar with it. I recently read about Brock Lesnar getting absolutely embarrassed by a guy who boxes mainly? If I had to pick one guy NOT to get in a cage with, it would defintely be Brock Lesnar. He's a manster!!

My buddies used to watch MMA stuff all the time (heck, they still might). I was always a wrestling guy, but cage fighting and Tito Ortiz just do NOT do it for me. Our network used to carry..some competitor to UFC..wow, I can't remember the brand. Embarrassing. I know that each team had coaches (Bas Ruten was one of them, and I think Ken and Frank Shamrock were coaches also), and that there were some impressive guys in there that I kinda wished some guys made it there. Chris Horodecki was a puss, and I couldn't stand looking at him. Bart (spelled phonetically..) Paul-a-shev-ski was pretty awesome though. He looked totally BA, and had awesome tattoos. I was just an observer for the entire run, but in the final episode, I SO wanted him to destroy Horodecki.

--Ah, IFL Battleground, yes. Here we go:

UGH! Watching this again is making me mad. Look at him squirm under the ropes at 1:55!!, and then he steps out AGAIN at 2:14!! Horodecki was outfought in that match. Just horrible. It was a pretty neat league/show/idea though. I liked the way it worked. Good stuff!

Did you watch at all, OMW?

@DrFinkelstein

I'm listening to it right now. Some guy is talking about Animal Crossing.

@Renjaku

Haha, I have NO idea what that is. Help me to understand!
--Is that Poker or something?

@missypissy

Hey, sometimes you gotta pull for your Conference, too. I dig it, man. Enjoy the game.

@anon_mastermind

MLB- I like the Orioles. Do you follow at all anymore? Did you follow the Nationals briefly after they left Montreal? The Orioles really beefed up their infield this year. Its going to be pretty nuts!

@X-pert74

..and the commercials? Do you guys do anything fun? Do you bet on the scores? Winning money gets you interested in a lot of things REALLY quick. We do sidebets on stuff all night. "A buck says this next commercial is for a car!!" "YOU'RE ON!!!" Everyone watches in anticipation...

"AWW, its McDonalds."

@Mr_Mustache I have no idea. I've never watched the superbowl before, so it'll be a whole new experience for me. I'm expanding my horizons :]
02/06/11, 05:43
I'm totally going to push State of Origin on you guys when it's time. I'm pretty sure at least ONE cable channel in the US carries it. I know the UK does.

America One broadcasts the NRL club games at the very least.

Dammit, I need more Aussies on this site.
02/06/11, 05:47
@X-pert74

Well, I might suggest getting in on the grid thing. They have 0-9 across the top and the side usually.

The number pertains to the "ones place" in the score. So, if you get 0x0, and the score is 10-0 after the 1st quarter, you'd win whatever the pot is designated for that. Usually the 1st and 3rd quarters are the lowest, halftime 2nd biggest, and the final score the largest, obviously. We go a quarter a spot, but some places (depending on how many people play) do it at a buck.

Tricky part is that the numbers are set after the board is filled in, so you don't know which numbers you're getting. I like to clump a bunch of squares together, or get 'em all in a line. Bring some loose change and your fun hat!
02/06/11, 05:47
I have absolutely no idea what's going to happen tomorrow. I think people are a bit too high on Green Bay and I was surprised to see them favored. Still, it would not surprise me to see them win.

If I had to put money on it, I'd go with the Steelers. Their experience could pay off, while Green Bay might have that just happy to be there syndrome.
02/06/11, 06:00
@Paperclyp

Whenever I think about Aaron Rodgers, I think back to him sitting there on Draft Day, totally alone forever.

Each team had like 15 minutes to make a first round pick (so 1-4 is like an hour..), and I can't even remember where he ended up going. I had a video in here, but he wasn't getting picked yet, and they were already going on #16. I think he ended up going at #24.. So yeah, ~6 hours later.

I know that says nothing about the guy personally, but..its just not something you put with a Superbowl caliber QB in your head.
(Tom Brady went much later for those who didn't know)
02/06/11, 06:45
@Mr_Mustache

I don't pay much attention to where he went in the draft. I think he went 24th, but he was the second quarterback. The 49ers took Alex Smith, and damn I'm sure they wish they could redo that pick.

I think Rodgers will be great for years to come. I'm just not so sure about his line against the Steelers.
02/06/11, 06:59
That's because the 49ers are dumb as shit and picked Alex Smith over him which they probably regret every passing day and that I'm so very grateful for.

I think this is really the Steelers game to lose. People are probably still high on the idea that one of the "Super Bowl Picks" from pre-season actually made it that far, which is pretty shocking given all the injuries they had throughout the year. But I think the experience will pay off for the Steelers. They are a well coached team that knows how to handle the pressure. I'm sure it'll be a good game, though. We finally get two good defenses in there (Arizona and Indy being the last two teams to lose the Super Bowl) so hopefully it's a hard hitting, low scoring affair with the big play actually meaning something. As much as I liked Kurt Warner, I just don't like seeing 3 and outs because your team has no running game and you can't seem to not throw the ball 40 yards to a receiver who can't catch.

As for beating the Saints, that was probably the greatest moment in Seattle sports that I'd seen in awhile. I'm down here in Houston now, so I'm surrounded by Saints fans and there are no Seahawk fans here. But for just one moment in time I was able to sport my bright gear hat, my Seahawks shirt, and laugh at the Saints fans. Plus, they finally took off those stupid NFL ads about the Saints because they choked. All the talk about how the Saints were just going to walk all over them quickly backtracked with "Well, the Saints really weren't that good anyways". Beautiful.
02/06/11, 07:04
My hope is for the Packers to lose and a few days later for an asteroid to hit Green Bay, erasing it from existence.

Yes I hate the Packers THAT much.
02/06/11, 07:45
@chrisbg99

Roaches would survive the impact. Is this your first step to world domination?
02/06/11, 08:03
It'd be a step.

And man is that an old reference.
02/06/11, 09:18
@Paperclyp

Oh yeah, I'm not doubting that at all. Smith-Rodgers is nothing like Manning-Leaf though. Could you imagine?? Awful.
(I know that Leaf actually went after Manning..but what if he didn't? YECH.)

@missypissy

That was pretty darn cool. I was AMAZED that weekend; Seahawks over Saints, Ravens over whoever..and former Bills backs were doing awesome!! Marshawn Lynch had the coolest run I've seen in I don't know how long, and I think McGahee picked up the official nail in the coffin TD for Baltimore.

My teams are the Bills and Orioles, so I don't get to wear my stuff to show it off (as you did) that often. I mean, I still wear it, but its more along the lines of (and this just happened Friday night when I was in Buffalo) "hey, see, I told you there were still Bills fans!" Then I got to talk to the lady at the rest stop about "all you really can do is hope.." *heavy sigh*

Niners are my dad's favorite team, so I'm partial to them. Always liked Jerry Rice. What a classy guy. Steve Young, too.

@chrisbg99

Who do you hate 2nd Most? In my "Most Hated Sports Teams," Yankees will forever be #1. I think the Patriots are #2 for me. I haven't hated the Dolphins really since the mid-90's. I think I hate the Jets more than them now. Lets make the Jets #3..

I've actually gone on trips TO Baltimore to see the Orioles play. I get to Camden Yards (BEAUTIFUL ballpark) and there are MORE freakin' Yankee fans than Oriole fans, and everyone walking around Baltimore and WORKING in Baltimore loves the Yankees!! I take a trip from UPSTATE NY and I actually encounter MORE Yankee fans. What the SMERD!!

One time I was heckling Melky Cabrera at a Rochester Red Wing game (AAA, he was on the visiting team [SWB Yankees, I think]). An usher actually came to me and said they've had several complaints and I need to keep it down. --Wait a minute...I'm not allowed to heckle the VISITING team???

IN MY OWN HOME TOWN!?!?!

The Yankees make me SICK.
02/06/11, 12:03
My Top 5 Hated Teams goes like this:

1. Packers - As a Vikings fan I am required by law to hate them.
2. Mets - As a Braves fan they are just wannabe Yankees and terrible at it.
3. Dodgers - When the Braves were in the West, my dad taught me a strong hatred for the Dodgers.
4. Yankees - I don't care about their spending habits, more power to them. But they have caused me heartbreak in two WSs but since they are AL I don't have to think about them that much.
5. New York Giants - 41-0. Pretty much all I can say about that.
02/06/11, 12:11
Die-hard Steelers fan here, so of course I'm going to root for them today. I see a lot of people favoring Green Bay and it makes me scratch my head as to why there's so much Steeler hate. Then again...I know why, and it still makes me scratch my head. BUT, be that as it may I will vote for my beloved Steelers, though I fully expect the game to be a brawl with a lot of hard hits and not a whole lot of scoring. What I AM concerned about is the Steelers either being on fire the first half and sucking it up in the second, or being terrible in the first half and going out guns blazing to pull it off in the second half. It seems like they play that way a lot, and while the head coach says his team is comfy with that, I am not, and when it comes to the big Super Bowl title...I want to see them play solid from start to finish.
