The games of 2010 you are sick of hearing about (let's talk about them!) [roundtable]

Irony!

Maybe it's just because I listen to way too many gaming podcasts, but I cannot stand hearing about Game Dev Story anymore. The first time I heard it mentioned, it was intriguing enough: you play this sim where you're this developer trying to make it. The big draw of the game, beyond the sim aspect, seems to be the ability to give your games weird titles and one-up your friends.

So yeah, I've never played the game but I feel I did it justive in two sentences.

Well, every single podcast I listen to has had at least one person going on and on for at least 15 minutes about this game, over-explaining it and just giggling at the titles he or others came up with. After the 3rd time or so, unless my hands were busy doing something else, I would reach for the fast forward button as quickly as I could when I heard the game being mentioned.

Good lord. I think all these games journalists follow each other on Twitter (or maybe Neogaf, makes me glad I don't have the habit of lurking there) and then when one of them starts praising a certain game, everyone else will latch on to this "discovery" and want to share it with everyone else. It's pretty damn annoying, actually. Find your own obscure games to talk about, god damn it.

So... anyone else? There's a chance I may be the only one with this "problem", since it's my own fault if I subject myself to over half a dozen gaming podcasts...

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

My question still stands, though: why aren't people here simply using skype when playing Wii games online together? The hardware requirements are not that high, if you have your PC (and you do, since you're chatting) you're already almost there.

I get the feeling some people here never used it and think it's more complicated to use than it is.

@Simbabbad

I guess, and I don't have have any malice towards the game, but the popularity goes way over my head.

Mass Effect 2, only because I haven't played it yet. I'm sure I'll praise it just as much as everyone else...

Oops, my bad. Yeah, I'm glad that Team Meat's hardships paid off so well.

@Simbabbad

While I will admit that Super Meat Boy is a really good game, what is so revolutionary about it and why is it more important than any other really good game that gets released. I played a little of the demo, but I don't see it being all that.

Enlighten me.

Donkey Kong Country Returns. I wish retro would keep making 3D adventure/platformers.

edit: Actually, never mind, I just don't like DKC.

@Renjaku

But DKCR is better than DKC...

For whatever reason I hate Donkey Kong, so probably DKCR. That or Mass Effect 2, probably because I haven't played the series so the gushing has no context.

Minecraft. Never played it, only saw screens of it, but people talk about it all the time. Forum goers, friends, people on the street, the little guy in my head...they just will not stop!!!

Nothing, because I'm an American and respect your right to talk about whatever you want, and don't let it bother me because I'm not a petty child. ;)

For some reason or another, Red Dead Redemption. Enjoyed the game, but I often see people say it's one of the best games of the generation if not the best, and it's just not at that level.

Very good game, just kind of tired of hearing that it's the best thing since sliced bread.

@Pandareus I've never bothered with skype, but my computer is pretty lame. Sometimes it starts chugging to a near standstill even if all I have open are a few tabs in Firefox. I don't know what's wrong with it. When I run spybot/adaware/whatever, I usually only get a few things that show up too, so I don't think it's viruses on my computer or anything like that.

@MasterSandman II

You're doing deaf?

--Anyway, I can always understand Anand and Chack really well, but I have a tough time hearing you. When I played AC with Heli before, I could understand her as well. I think it call comes down to placement in proximity to the TV, placement in proximity to yourself, and the volume at which you're able to talk.

I do hear your bellowing laughs when you score goals on me though in 2K11. I guess you like WiiSpeak then, right?, haha.

Really? Even I don't understand me on Wii Speak! Except for the cavernous yawning. Can't miss that.

@Simbabbad
Weren't there a bunch of Indie platformers that had similar mechanics around the same time?

@Kal-El814
Do you hate Donkey Kong, or did you hate DKCR? It's pretty awesome, and I was never a big fan of DKC.

@Paperclyp
To be honest, I don't even see why people liked that game at all, much less gave it game of the year. I didn't find any of the actual in-game activities fun, the missions were boring, the scenery was unattractive, etc. It seems that my priorities and standards are quite different from everyone else's.

@X-pert74
Did you install any Add-Ons for Firefox? One of them might be the problem. Also, you might wanna roll back to Firefox 2 or 1.

I still think N+ has a hell of a lot of similarities to Super Meat Boy, beyond the difference in physics.

'Splosion Man also has some similarities, and that's just from my very limited exposure to 'indie' platformers.

By the way, I just tried out a couple of the indie platformers that I'd always heard about (for investigation purposes). VVVVV was kind of annoying and I Want to be the Guy was just irritating. Neither were Meat Boy-esque, though.

VVVVVV is amazing. I loved that game.

@Xbob42

I feel the same way. I really don't care what games people talk about and I'm certainly not going to get annoyed by it.

@anandxxx I installed a few. I think the one that's most taxing is probably greasemonkey, which I got so I could have IGN show which threads in a user's post history were replies (RE:) or new threads, since IGN stupidly cut that feature out. Aside from that though I don't believe I use it for anything. I also have Memory Fox though, which is helpful

I really want to play VVVVVV sometime. Is it a free game, or do you have to pay for it?

Oh cool, thanks. I'll get it the next time I use Steam then
