Let's revisit the Wind Waker debut trailer! [roundtable]

You know the one...

Yeah, so I loved this trailer from the get-go. I watched it, like, 7 times that day and was bewildered (though highly amused) by the web response (OMG, Link's face is stylized, OMG!!). I took this trailer to mean that Nintendo was shaking up the Zelda formula by smoothing out the control (one of my main issues from OOT), making the action and maybe the platforming more dynamic, adding traps and more elaborate context-sensitive moves, and just generally making a game that played like a Tex Avery cartoon. And then we got Wind Waker. Which played exactly like Ocarina, except slightly less stiffly and with a boat. And with much less content. The only new idea from the trailer that really made it into the final game was the timing-based counter move.

Now, it's possible that I interpreted the trailer wrong all along. Maybe it was always meant to be sort of a mood piece, like Kojima's trailers. On the other hand, none of those scenarios seemed too far-fetched, and things like the stealth DID make it into the game (unfortunately), so...

Suffice it to say, I did not feel the final game lived up to that trailer. And Wind Waker might be my least favorite Zelda.

So how did it go for you guys? How did your perception of Wind Waker change over the years? Feel free to include SpaceWorld 2000. And WW's legacy, compared to Twilight Princess (clearly the superior game in every non-superficial way).

And I'll trust your judgement. I admit that I haven't looked into his post history on this specific site, and that MAYBE him trashing the Game Cube just happens to be a coincidental correlation with is past 'trashings', and has NOTHING to do with him being a troll on IGN.

Understand that my response would have been completely different had it been someone like Anand hating on the Game Cube. I knew it would have been genuine. But seeing it come from LDM is like listening to an ex-racist say how much he dislikes Obama. The ex-racist could genuinely dislike Obama as a president, or he could simply dislike like him because he's still a racist.

But like I said, I'll trust your judgment. I just got so used to our little Utopia here at Negative World that I was starting to get a little worried.

@anandxxx Well I more just don't get how anyone could dislike Metroid Prime. Unless they torture kittens for fun.

Agreed, especially after that cool SpaceWorld 2000 trailer of Link and Ganondorf duking it out. Wind Waker turned out great, but I was so disappointed when it was first revealed.

I feel exactly the same.

Also, anyone remember this trailer?

Man I wanted that game so bad!

Sorry I forget how to embed. How do you do it again?

Oh god, I wanted Donkey Kong Racing so bad!

And um, to embed you just copy the embed code from Youtube and paste it here.

I, to this day, think the Spaceworld 2000 trailer is the ugliest piece of crap that Nintendo could have ever shown to hype a new Zelda game. The 2001 video is one of the greatest reliefs ever as far as I am concerned.

@NoName
You have Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, two great Zeldas in the Wind Waker style. Spirit Tracks one-ups its forefather, in my opinion.

LOL DKR looks so bad nowadays wow.... Rare was turning DK into an other Sonic franchise....

oh anyone remember those weird rare characters on the N64 game... and Kiddie Conker? lol

@chrisbg99

I didn't like the Space World trailer either. My first viewing of Wind Waker was in a Gamepro magazine, since I wasn't on IGN at the time, so I completely missed out on the internet blowing up. I was a little shocked that Nintendo went with the style, but I love the graphics (character models left a lot to be desired, though). I did have the pleasure of sitting through the vast majority of the Wind Waker hate post-release, though. Man I enjoyed those days. Kiddy, mature, all the fun. Though, whoever posted the original Zelda's manual artwork did so wrongly! You are supposed to show that Wind Waker ISN'T that style! It's all dark, mature, and sooooo Ocarina of Time like, I mean COME ON! (totally agree that Wind Waker was more true to the roots than Ocarina of Time).

Majora's Mask is my favorite 3D game, though. Wind Waker would be second, with Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess placing respectively behind.

Using the internet wayback machine is a great idea! We should do that for tons of topics and laugh at our previous selves.

@Zero
I hate animals, too.

Donkey Kong Racing always looked so horrible to me. I never even particularly liked the animals in Donkey Kong Country, and Racing never seemed like it had a direction. Why didn't they just make DKR2? And actually ship it?

There is a serious Rare treasure trove of secrets somewhere, with details about all the development troubles and different versions of Perfect Dark (which was apparently more fun in earlier iterations), Kameo, Donkey Kong Racing, etc. I don't remember where it is, but it's fascinating. Even their PUZZLE games have troubled development histories (Coconut Crackers!). I'm not sure if Rare is flourishing under M$, but at least they are turning out games at a semi-reasonable pace, I guess. That's something.

That part probably annoyed me the most, for some reason.
Maybe because you hate everything that is good and pure? (That doesn't include filthy animals, btw.)

@littledeadmonkey
Speaking of which, how many of the characters in DKR were NEVER in any other game? I wonder if they were even planned to be, or if Rare just turned on the googly-eye machine and let 'er rip.

@anandxxx
Haha, googly-eyed machine. From memory, DKR's racers were Diddy, Tiptup, Pipsy, Krunch, Bumper, Timber, Banjo and Conker, with Drumstick and T.T. being secret characters. Diddy, Conker and Banjo obviously showed up again, and Krunch was basically a Kremling. The other 6 stayed behind.

DKR kinda looks weird now...DK's model looks pretty bad, and why are the rhinos so tiny?
12/01/10, 19:37
Animals riding animals is just... perverse. I mean, did they have a whole hierarchy? Were the rhinos the slaves?

Plus, they were literally kept in tiny boxes when not in use! That's some serious animal-on-animal cruelty right there. Maybe DKR was actually a statement on the human condition.

I love the phrase 'human condition'.

And I'm still waiting for my Tiptup game!!

Banjo - his first game, became his own series
Krunch - Kremling, but the only game "Krunch" is in
Conker - First game, very different in his later games.
TipTup - a minor character in the 64 Banjo games
T.T. - Only in DKR
Pipsy - Only in DKR
Timber - Only in DKR
Drumstick - Only in DKR
Taj - he is referenced Nuts & Bolts.. that's it

@anandxxx Has Rare's pacing really gotten better? Rareware put out like 8 or 9 N64 games or something. Gamecube/Xbox era there was almost nothing, and they haven't really done too much this generation either.

Anyway, haters be damned, I was so psyched about Donkey Kong Racing at the time. I used to be a huge racing game fan (maybe still am, though none come around that really amaze me anymore) and it seemed like it had potential. Remember too that at the time Rare was mostly cranking out hits, so I had trust in them.
12/01/10, 20:49
Haha, Pipsy.

Rare's Gamecube-era output was minimal, but they've been pretty prolific on the 360. For them, I mean. Maybe some of that was due to finally shipping long-in-development projects, but they've been turning out games at a decent pace this gen.

And now they're turning out Avatar Clothes at a decent pace!

@Simbabbad

Wait... did people actually complain about the final battle with Ganondorf? I know people complained about him being included, but... the actual sword battle itself was the fulfillment of nearly 6 years of broken promises.
12/01/10, 21:11
I remember thinking Diddy Kong Racing sucked when I got it but I was too much of a lil fanboy at the time to really admit it. Nowadays I'd tear it apart. I hate the cars controlled.
12/01/10, 21:38
I loved Twilight Princess and the fight with Ganondorf. Yea, you get your typical morons complaining its the same boss, storyline, ect. But thats what I like about games like Zelda, Mario, ect. Link fights Ganondorf, Mario battles Bowser. If the bad guys are changed , it would be tough for me to care about the game.

For me, it is really hard picking which game I like the best, OoT or TP. I only pick OoT cause it was epic, plus the first Zelda game I ever played. Overall, I thought TP was a better game. I loved the size of the world, ect. Overall, I really like both games equally, but if I had to choose one, OoT is the one I have to pick. Though I don't like having to choose just one.

Nintendo's E3 trailer for Wind Waker spawned one of the saddest, most pathetic displays of fanboyism I've ever seen. The only thing that surpasses it was IGN's infamous 7.9'ing of MK: Double Dash.

Nintendo shows off one trailer that, granted, was not what Nintendo fans were expecting at all from the new Zelda at that time. But instead of cutting Nintendo the benefit of the doubt since they were coming off arguably two of the greatest games ever made in Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, they proceeded to almost crucify Nintendo for MONTHS over ONE TRAILER TO A GAME THEY HAD NOT EVEN PLAYED YET!! I remember reading the GCNGB at IGN after the trailer was shown and just shaking my head. It was really, really sad and I'm very glad I was not one of those that was calling for Nintendo's head for what turned out to be a fantastic game and one of the best games of last generation. It was one of the few times I was actually ashamed to be a Nintendo fan.

@WrathOfSamus777
7.9 was baaaaaaaad, bad bad bad bad bad...but Celda was much, much worse. The Celda controversy continued for YEARS, not months--long after the game came out, in fact. I don't think there'll ever be an event quite as cataclysmic as that trailer unveiling for a long time, short of maybe one of the big dogs dropping out of the industry.

@Simbabbad

Yeah... huh. The old saying "whatever Nintendo does, they can't win" seems to apply here. *sigh* Oh well, lol.

@gamewizard65

I dunno, man. I can't really agree with you on that one. My favorite Legend of Zelda games are the ones that Link faces off against a different foe - not Ganon. (Link's Awakening, Majora's Mask, and Phantom Hourglass)

But that only *kinda* applies to Mario. My favorite Mario game is Super Mario Bros. 3, which of course has Bowser as the final boss (spoilers?). But a few of my other favorites don't have Bowser in them at all - namely the two Super Mario Land games.

While I appreciate tradition, having different villains once in a while can shake things up and prevent things from being too predictable. Variety is the spice of life, y'know?
