Netflix. It's on the 360, it's on PS3, it's on the Wii, it's $8 a month, it doesn't require a disc, and it's now even in Canada (with a severely reduced selection). So. Unless you're really poor, a picky Canadian, a hater of the 7th art, or European, there's no excuse for not having it! What movies has the streaming service allowed you to discover? Because of the limited selection here in Canada, which denies us access to some of the more recent and popular movies on the service, I've been using Netflix to watch 2 different kinds of movies: terrible crap that I'd never make any effort or pay anything to see (The Happening, Teen Wolf Too), and highly respected and acclaimed foreign movies that for some reason I always put back on the shelf without renting when I'm at the video store. So here's a recommendation for you: Amores Perros - This movie received much acclaim, won many prizes, and I'm probably one of the last chumps to see it. But hey, maybe you haven't seen it either, so at least I'm better than you. From looking at the title, you may recognize the word "amores" (love) and get totally the wrong idea about the movie. You may also recognize "perros" (dog) and be completely befuddled. Basically, the movie contains three vignettes in which cruelty and, yes, love, are central themes. For one third of the movie, you follow the story of a kid using his dog to participate in dog fights and win money so he can elope with his brother's wife. For the second part, you follow a couple's crumbling relationship and oh god you're getting totally the wrong idea again. Don't worry, it's totally interesting and plays out a bit like a thriller. Actually, watching it I felt like I was reading an Edgar Allan Poe short story, but maybe it's just because it features... sounds... coming out of the floorboard. The third story is about this vagrant who abandoned his family to become a guerillero, went to prison, and now takes on hitman jobs from the corrupt cop who arrested him. The characters cross each others' paths a couple of time, so you could say it's a bit like Pulp Fiction in that way, except I found the stories and characters in this film infinitely more interesting. Heh. I don't know what your experience with foreign movies is or what you think of them, all I can say is that this movie is absolutely not boring. From the first scene to the last, I was hooked. A couple of suggestions, I watched Red recently. Its a movie about an older guy and a group of teenagers stop by while he is fishing and kills his dog. Overall the movie was pretty good, not the best movie ever, but definatly not a waste of your time.
I also watched, The New Daughtet, starring Kevin Costner. Man, I guess ever since his crappy Robin Hood movie no one wants to give him a chance with any really good AAA material. Now, this movie, is not as good as Red, and honestly the ending really just sucked. So, Im warning anyone who watches it now...movie was alright, until the ending. It was suspenseful and I was interested in how it would all end. The thing that sucks with alot of movies is, even if I was experiencing shit like this I know how I would react. Why are writers and directors so fucking gumb and why do they think the audience is dumb?
The last movie, which I first saw when I was really young, came out in the 70's, The Car, starring James Brolin. I remember really liking it back then, of course I was around 10. Basically its about a possessed car killing people. I'll be honest, after watching it again for the first time after all these years, it really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Definatly a B movie, but hell, it was better than The New Daughter.
Ok, there you have it. Three more suggestions. Enjoy! |

I'm currently watching Battlestar Galactica and Persons Unknown on Netflix. The former is really good though it has entirely too many boring, "filler" episodes and too many of the main characters have gotten to the point of me hating them. (In fact, one of the main characters just died in the episode I just watched, but because I had been rooting for that character's death for several episodes, the death that was clearly supposed to be sad (and maybe even redemptive) just left me absent of any emotion. The positive brought up that character from hate to apathy in the last minute, which sucks, but I suppose it's better than leaving it at hate.) The latter is a really interesting premise that is executed in a less than stellar way, leading to some boring stretches, little direction for the audience and characters, and several "that could have been better if X was done instead" moments.
Supernatural just became available on Netflix Instant, and I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it who is interested in popular folklore, myths, monsters, and classic rock. (Or at least I highly recommend the first 5 seasons. After that I can only recommend individual episodes since I'm not in love with the direction they chose to take the show after what could have more or less been the series finale.) |

@sirmastersephiroth - I was referring to Starbuck. That character just really got on my nerves earlier this season, and he/she just tended to get worse. Of course I'm also expecting that she is a Cylon (though I don't know for sure), so that could have also done something for the reason I wasn't as surprised or sad to see that character go. EDIT: Also, regarding Supernatural, I do think the show could have been great post-Season 5, but it's just the specific way that the writers chose to go about it that made it not so great. They really stepped all over their old mythology in Season 6, they've ruined what could have been an awesome Big Bad for Season 7 or some time later in the show (i.e., the Leviathan)... They've had some good individual episodes and some good ideas, and I do like how this season is a bit more serialized than the show has been before, but it's just not being pulled off very well, IMO. |
