The Netflix recommendation thread [community]

Netflix. It's on the 360, it's on PS3, it's on the Wii, it's $8 a month, it doesn't require a disc, and it's now even in Canada (with a severely reduced selection). So. Unless you're really poor, a picky Canadian, a hater of the 7th art, or European, there's no excuse for not having it!

What movies has the streaming service allowed you to discover?

Because of the limited selection here in Canada, which denies us access to some of the more recent and popular movies on the service, I've been using Netflix to watch 2 different kinds of movies: terrible crap that I'd never make any effort or pay anything to see (The Happening, Teen Wolf Too), and highly respected and acclaimed foreign movies that for some reason I always put back on the shelf without renting when I'm at the video store.

So here's a recommendation for you:

Amores Perros - This movie received much acclaim, won many prizes, and I'm probably one of the last chumps to see it. But hey, maybe you haven't seen it either, so at least I'm better than you. From looking at the title, you may recognize the word "amores" (love) and get totally the wrong idea about the movie. You may also recognize "perros" (dog) and be completely befuddled. Basically, the movie contains three vignettes in which cruelty and, yes, love, are central themes.

For one third of the movie, you follow the story of a kid using his dog to participate in dog fights and win money so he can elope with his brother's wife. For the second part, you follow a couple's crumbling relationship and oh god you're getting totally the wrong idea again. Don't worry, it's totally interesting and plays out a bit like a thriller. Actually, watching it I felt like I was reading an Edgar Allan Poe short story, but maybe it's just because it features... sounds... coming out of the floorboard. The third story is about this vagrant who abandoned his family to become a guerillero, went to prison, and now takes on hitman jobs from the corrupt cop who arrested him.

The characters cross each others' paths a couple of time, so you could say it's a bit like Pulp Fiction in that way, except I found the stories and characters in this film infinitely more interesting. Heh.

I don't know what your experience with foreign movies is or what you think of them, all I can say is that this movie is absolutely not boring. From the first scene to the last, I was hooked.

@NoName

So many shows to watch… The killing is on my list, but so is The Fall, the rest of Derek, Chuck (maybe), Hannibal, and a bunch more.

I've just finished the first season of Derek last night, and that show is brilliant. It's not something I could marathon, but at a pace of one-every-couple-of-nights, it's just perfect. I had been worried that the show would be mean (it's Ricky Gervais, after all), but it's quite the opposite. Nearly the whole cast is endearing throughout the show, the few who aren't kind of redeem themselves on one episode, and it's a setting and characters that you just don't usually see on TV. It's wonderful.

Green Lantern the Animated Series is excellent if I didn't mention it already. A couple missteps here and there but it's a show cancelled far too early. The first season is 23 episodes though and cut into two arcs so it's kind of like two seasons.

Reminds me of Justice League and also Avatar in a way.

Netflix Germany had Deadwood people, I think we have a new winning region.

@PogueSquadron I really want to watch Justice League but, I haven't watched much of that Superman and I'd hate to go in blind into that show and miss awesome connections becsuse of that. Netflix should put Superman on there.

I wish I could recommend Monsieur Lahzar but apparently that one got removed back in April.

I'm going to recommend that you all watch the third season of Torchwood, maybe go back to the first two if you're curious, pretend the 4th one doesn't exist.

Also Batman Beyond.

@Guillaume
Did you watch any of The Fall yet? Season 2 just started over here. It's such a novelty for us, hearing the Belfast accent and seeing familiar locations on a show that is actually cool. I'll be keen to hear how it is accepted elsewhere. They are defo tapping into the scandi-noire vibe; slow and tense (and mostly humourless) but gripping.

Australia finally got Netflix! Yay!

@Pokefreak911

I'm on the brink. I can see a bunch of stuff I might watch if I had the time, but nothing must see. Also iiNet gives me unmetered access which is super cool.

SGA is on the list. Why no SG1?

@Shadowlink
We'll probably get SG1 on there later.
First month is free though, so that's a good thing.
03/24/15, 12:49
@Pokefreak911

Can you use that any time or is it only this month?
03/24/15, 12:54
@Shadowlink
Not sure.

@Super_Conzo

Oh, hi! Damn, sorry for not checking the thread in a while.

Netflix here got S2 only a little over a month ago, I think. Haven't watched it yet, Karen found the first season grueling to watch and I think we'll wait until happy Summer days before diving into it.

@Guillaume
Hey, no bigs.

So, did Karen find it grueling because of the atrocities or grueling because of the pace, plot, dodgy acting or constant whisper-speak?
03/24/15, 16:55
Haha.

She finds the violence tough to watch.
03/24/15, 17:20
Shirley usually won't do violence either. She just straight up refuses to watch Oldboy, which is kind of interesting to me because she went online and searched for the most violent scenes to see how bad it was, watched them, and then was like "I can't watch this movie!" And I'm like "You already watched literally all of the most violent stuff!" Ah well.

Has anyone watched Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt IE the show starring Erin from The Office? Shirley and I watched the first episode and it was... ok. But kind of annoying. Everything is so over-the-top.

@Zero

The show is right up our alley. Several laugh-out-loud moments per episode. And so far, at episode three, it seems to only get better.
03/24/15, 18:30
@Zero I felt the same way about episode 1. I also found Titus to be really annoying. The show does get better/funnier as it goes on though.

I never got to the point to where I loved the show and would go out of my way to recommend it to anyone, but I definitely ended the season really enjoying it and looking forward to Season 2.
03/25/15, 00:43
There are some great moments, like Titus discovering it's easier to live as a werewolf than a black man. And Titus's terrible music video. Or Titus trying to withdraw his last $2 from an ATM, agreeing to a $3 charge and then receiving a -$1 note.

Breakout star of the series for me, Titus. But I really enjoyed the whole thing!
03/25/15, 01:49
We watched episode 2, I guess it was a bit better than 1. Still can't say that it is gripping me, but might be worth giving more of a chance.

Somehow we need to make that gif into a Negative World meme...

@Infinitywave

-$1 note. LOL.

That's absurdly hilarious.
