The Netflix recommendation thread [community]

Netflix. It's on the 360, it's on PS3, it's on the Wii, it's $8 a month, it doesn't require a disc, and it's now even in Canada (with a severely reduced selection). So. Unless you're really poor, a picky Canadian, a hater of the 7th art, or European, there's no excuse for not having it!

What movies has the streaming service allowed you to discover?

Because of the limited selection here in Canada, which denies us access to some of the more recent and popular movies on the service, I've been using Netflix to watch 2 different kinds of movies: terrible crap that I'd never make any effort or pay anything to see (The Happening, Teen Wolf Too), and highly respected and acclaimed foreign movies that for some reason I always put back on the shelf without renting when I'm at the video store.

So here's a recommendation for you:

Amores Perros - This movie received much acclaim, won many prizes, and I'm probably one of the last chumps to see it. But hey, maybe you haven't seen it either, so at least I'm better than you. From looking at the title, you may recognize the word "amores" (love) and get totally the wrong idea about the movie. You may also recognize "perros" (dog) and be completely befuddled. Basically, the movie contains three vignettes in which cruelty and, yes, love, are central themes.

For one third of the movie, you follow the story of a kid using his dog to participate in dog fights and win money so he can elope with his brother's wife. For the second part, you follow a couple's crumbling relationship and oh god you're getting totally the wrong idea again. Don't worry, it's totally interesting and plays out a bit like a thriller. Actually, watching it I felt like I was reading an Edgar Allan Poe short story, but maybe it's just because it features... sounds... coming out of the floorboard. The third story is about this vagrant who abandoned his family to become a guerillero, went to prison, and now takes on hitman jobs from the corrupt cop who arrested him.

The characters cross each others' paths a couple of time, so you could say it's a bit like Pulp Fiction in that way, except I found the stories and characters in this film infinitely more interesting. Heh.

I don't know what your experience with foreign movies is or what you think of them, all I can say is that this movie is absolutely not boring. From the first scene to the last, I was hooked.

The Mrs_ and I watched the entire first season of Blue Mountain State yesterday. We enjoyed it, but I'm betting that nobody else here would like it. Its a "dudebro" show about a college football team featuring tons of drinking (eh), drugs (bah), and tail-chasing (yessss).

The opening credits feature two girls meeting halfway on a banana. *gulp*

I know people are asking about him a lot..but some folks might have no idea.

COSMOS is on Netflix right now, the entire series. It is Carl Sagan's show from the 70's, and it blows your mind. I don't know where else to put this, because I don't feel like it will have the traction that telling people "hey, Carl Sagan's show is on Netflix!" I guess spread it around when it comes up?

Such a cool guy. I mean, he probably comes off as nerdy to a lot of folks, but he's just so incredibly smart and whatever.

Cool guy.

@Kastiel - I tried watching Ink. Got maybe 15-30 minutes into it before quitting on it. I just couldn't really get into it (plus I was watching it with someone who's less into genre movies than I am, so I knew she was ready to stop watching it before I was).

Reviving threads like a badass, I wanted to let you know guys that the UK TV show, Misfits on Netflix is very frickin' good. The premise is silly, but it all blends in to a coherent & fun tv serie. I highly recommend it. You got to check out the first 2 episodes to really get into it. The first season is 6 episodes. 2 other seasons were produced but aren't currently available on Netflix Canada... damn. BitTorrent, here I come!

^I never cared for that show. None of the characters were likeable to me, and I could just never find Nathan funny (I found him plenty annoying though)... The show's mythology gets much more interesting in Series 2, but the characters don't really improve. Only watched one episode of Series 3 before giving up on it. But I know some people love the show, so this Netflix acquisition is good news for those people. (Though I'm pretty sure Hulu has all 3 series up for free. You just have to sit through occasional commercials.)

On the last episode of Season 2 for Breaking Bad. I'm still trying to figure out why I put this show off for so long. Hopefully they'll replay the Premier of Season 5, so I can tape it, and then I can just tape the whole season and finish it off with the rest of the world D:

Oh snap, I didn't realize COSMOS was on Netflix. I'll definitely check that out.

It might be gone already. Truly sad. I forced episode 1 on Nikki. I think she conked out. It is too awesome for girls.

@Mr_Mustache

Some girls.

So wait, is it not available anymore? I wasn't aware stuff gets taken off of Netflix. That kinda sucks. Why would they do that?

I find a really useful tool is Instant Watcher. They have a pretty good list of what's new (and popular), as well as titles that are expiring soon. And sometimes it's easier to navigate a list than scroll through hundreds of cover art images.

Oh yeah, Netflix is balls. In our Movie Club, somebody had picked Battle Royale, and it was YANKED before the week was over, haha! I had to wait until BR came back a couple of weeks ago to watch it.

BTW, you should totally join Movie Club. All of you should!

Just watched an episode of Whisker Wars on Netflix.

You should all watch it to further understand the psyche of the Mustache, and Koovaps should watch it to feel more at home with his kinsmen and I. There is a place where we are accepted for who are we.

I watched some episodes of Tick recently (not on Netflix, I don't think..), and they were sad. I didn't think they were nearly as funny as when I was a kid. Of course, I haven't watch Tick vs. Tick. That will be the true litmus test.

Nikki has been watching PILES of Kids In The Hall recently. Theres some hilarious "they'd never get away with that on TV now" stuff on there.

@chrisbg99

There are some real gems in that list. I recommend watching Chowder (has fantastic humor) and Samurai Jack (great art style). I still need to finish up the Samurai Jack series so this will be a great way to get that done. Thanks!!

@Mr_Mustache

Dave Foley is so funny man. His type of humor is something that I didn't value until I got a little bit older.

@chrisbg99 Some of the DC animated shows that were on Cartoon Network are now on Netflix too -- namely Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, Batman Beyond, and Batman: The Brave and the Bold. I'm looking forward to checking out Adventure Time and the Justice League shows, and Brave and the Bold while I'm at it.
