Started it downloading last night before bed. Figure I should have some time to give it a try in the next... year... :(

@VofEscaflowne

Heh... you can keep it.

I'd love to obsess over this game and compete for the leaderboards, but it's so time-consuming, and there are so many games to play. I think I'll just aim for scores that net me the best medals, that should be challenge enough.

It's a fun game, but it's also just a shmup. A really well-made one, but still a regular shmup.

Cuthbert has been retweeting fawning praise like "Pure genius! Sidescroller is the best downloadable game of 2011!!!!1!" and I just think to myself "can I have some of what he's having?". I mean calm down, geez.

Hah, IGN's review of PixelJunk SideScroller is a bit low (6.5) and Dylan Cuthbert called him out on it via Twitter cause of how it was inaccurate that that it clearly showed he didn't spend much time with the game. Not only did the review show that he played it on the easiest difficulty setting, missing out on the "true" ending, but Daemon (yes, him ) went back and edited his review to edit out that part that he was called out on.

Don't forget that for a very limited time, the Pinball FX2 table "Paranormal" is free. Act quickly!

I bought Castlevania: Harmony of Despair after my friend recommended it even as single player jaunt. Well, it is a loot game so it was somewhat enjoyable at first, leveling up my guy and everything and while somewhat challenging, I was always able to get better at the levels, plus improving my gear to the point where I was always making satisfying progress.

Unfortunately, now I've made it to Dracula and the game is getting unbearable. You have to beat the 15 minute long level every time and I already have the best gear money can buy. Also you can only have one potion in your possession at any time so you can't just load up on potions like you can in other Metroidvania games.

So if I want to win, I have to master Dracula's third form (his first two are pretty much pushovers). That would be absolutely fine, except 1.) he has some cheap nearly insta kill moves, and 2.) as I said, I have to play the 15 minute level every time I did (which now that looting rarely gives me anything of use is deprived of all fun).

I am well known for being stubborn about beating games, but this is an example where I might just say fuck it, since I'm definitely not enjoying it anymore. Still, it's like a weight on my sholders every second that this game goes unbeaten.

I assume it's easier to beat multiplayer, if only I had Gold. Anyone have a free trial?

Good PSN update today, though I will probably keep my money.

More PS2 games released: A Harvest Moon title, BloodRayne, and Raiden III which I would get if I didn't get PixelJunk SideScroller last week.

As a PSN Plus member, I get Hydrophobia free, as well as all of the PSOne Crash Bandicoot games. Which I don't care for, except it includes Crash Team Racing, which Anand always raves about. So there's that.

Max and The Magic Market Gold Edition got released, too.

@Guillaume

Did you ever play any of the Crash Bandicoot games? I played the first 2 and I really liked both of them. I liked the first one the best.
11/02/11, 07:00
I bought, played and hated the first one. The save system is bonkers. And, I dunno. I can't get into it. Too hard.

@nacthenud
I grabbed it!

But no one else on my Friends List did? Weird.

Oh, well. I'm number one.

@Jargon
You can register another username for a free month, right?

@Guillaume
Crash Team Racing rules! Try it out, and let's have a DKR/MK/CTR discussion! BloodRayne wasn't too bad, either. A lot of the stuff that you mentioned about the PSN game was already there in the first one.

Is Hydrophobia the game that was on XBLA? Ugh.

@Anand
Well then add nacthenud to your friends list!

Will do! (If I don't, it's because my memory is like that of the guy from Memento.)
11/02/11, 20:36
Incidentally, you'll still be #1 - all my game time is going into Uncharted 3 for the near future - but at least you can be #1 over somebody else who has a score!
11/02/11, 21:00
That's okay. Number one is number one. I have no shame. I'd add a bunch of babies if they had played the game.

Unless they were some sort of super-babies...

I tried the Elevator Action demo on PSN. The graphics are very, very basic, but the game seemed pretty fun. As far as the “infiltrating a building and slamming doors in the enemies’ faces” genre goes, I like it a hell of a lot more than Bonanza Bros on the Genesis. It was a little bit basic, but the reel at the end of the demo promised some interesting power-ups. And the multiplayer could be pretty cool.

If I had had nostalgia for the original, I might have bought it, but I’ve never played it. But it was good enough that I didn’t outright delete the demo, so that’s something.

I also played Hydrophobia which was free for PSN+ members. The game had potential as far as the basic gameplay goes: climbing, platforming, and even the swimming seemed well done. But unfortunately, the first hour and a half is basically a “walk to the next cutscene” exercise. I got better stuff to do with my time than watch your terribly acted mediocre story , developers. Also, while I do enjoy some climbing and platforming, it’s kind of pointless in a game of this type without some sense of urgency. Sure, the NPC can scream “hurry up!” in my character’s headset all he wants, I still felt I could have kept hanging on that red pipe forever without being in any danger.

I don’t think I’ll be coming back to this game. There are too many better games to play.

@Guillaume

I've got BIG nostalgia for Elevator Action. It was one of my faves in the arcades of the early-80s.

I'll have to give it a spin.

I'm also looking forward to the upcoming Choplifter remake.

@New Forms

Give the demo a try for sure. Apparently the game was poorly received? It may just be for the very basic graphics, I don't know. But check it out.

Today on PSN: Call of Duty Elite.

CALL OF DUTY ELITE!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

Also, PSN+ people get Where is my Heart as an exclusive. It's a little indie game for PSP that I almost got to check out at E3, but apparently I went and broke it after 2 minutes, lol. Let's hope the finished game is more stable. It seemed interesting, to say the least.

Where is my Heart? Trailer from Bernie Schulenburg on Vimeo.

Rayman Origins demo is also up. w00t!

Oh, and a little game called Chrono Cross as far as PSOne Classics go. But I got the discs.

PS2 Classics: Full Spectrum Warrior. Interesting. Also: Stuntman Ignition.

Too many games. They can't expect me to buy it all.

I can't wait to pay $50 a year for stat tracking, access to map packs, more room for my epic HD videos and a TV show!!! And for just one game? THAT'S ELITE!
11/09/11, 03:37
Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game is on sale on XBLA this week for just $5 I totally just bought it. I won't start playing it yet though. I want to get a copy of River City Ransom and play through that first, so that I can experience the game that Scott Pilgrim is based on.

@X-pert74

Ooh, Scott Pilgrim for a mere $5?!? Boughted!
