In my opinion, of course.

This game is AMAZING. So much variety. Every level has a different gameplay element. Searching for the three star coins in each stage is challenging and incredibly rewarding. The game is amazing in single player and a blast in multiplayer. World 9 is a great, epic challenge. The final Bowser battle is incredible.

Overall, this is my favorite 2D Mario game and one of my favorite games of all time. I absolutely LOVE it! I hadn't played it since it released late last year, but I've been replaying it this week and I am just amazed at how much fun and deep it is. Nintendo completely nailed it with this game.

It would be really annoying playing online with randoms (cooperatively) but for sure fun with friends.

Yeah, random co-op could be frustrating, but the wonderful part of NSMB is that it can switch from cooperative to competitive in an instant, and that dynamic is perfect for some interesting gameplay modes that few other games can pull off so well. A two-on-two Bros vs Toads race mode would be cool, and it could provide some light strategy (Mario sprints ahead and collects coins while Luigi does his best to keep the Toads behind?). Even better, I'd love a Sabotage game where the four players are trying to finish a level together...but one of them actually has the opposite goal of finishing alone, and the others don't know who the double agent is. The three "good guys" would be trying to help everybody out, but would also be on the lookout for foul play. Meanwhile the saboteur tries to make his murders look like innocent mistakes.

I'd love to see something like that. Assuming it could run without lag. Which is obviously way too much to hope for.

Love the game, but I'm not prepared to call it the best.

Anxiously await the next 2D Mario... hope they can keep up with this quality of level design.

I think those are great ideas, and I wouldn't be surprised to see such a twist on the multiplayer in the inevitable 3DS New Super Mario Bros 2

@nate38 How would the "saboteur" be informed that they are the saboteur without others knowing though? Unless it was controlled with the DS or something but Nintendo seems to have given up on connectivity.

Oh wait! It could come through the Wii remote speaker quietly, so everyone would hold their remote up to their ear and only they would hear their role...

@Zero
Or just a rumble would do.

But everyone would be watching everyone else and someone would notice the rumble. Plus rumble makes a bit of noise.

I was talking about online (in which case it would be easy) but the speaker idea is also great for such a game mode played locally.

My friend just bought this game (new Wii owner) but is disappointed that it doesn't have online play. Is the general consensus that Nintendo wanted players to play in the same room together?

@Simbabbad

Yeah, coordinating something like the co-op ground pound would be pretty much impossible (even with voice chat, due to the delay by the time it reaches the other end of the other user).

@roykoopa64

Yes. Get a little further into the game--this game would not be nearly as fun or good online. Lag really would play a big role in this.

And my only complaint with NSMBWii is that it feels sort of sterile and controlled. Everything feels like a design document instead of wild imagination. It's a cool game, I love it, and there are a lot of really interesting things in it. It just is lacking an extra touch of oomph that would've really sealed the deal for me.

Its a great game for couples..you know, if you're into yelling at each other, going without naughty time later that night.

Haha, no really its fun. ..And you will yell.

@casper884 That's not a reason to keep it from being online though. Lag might be, but I think Nintendo could have done it if they wanted to. They just rarely want to.

TRUTH. I don't know how many times I had to explain to my girlfriend that I wasn't actually mad because I'm used to 20+ years of playing video games with males and light shit-talking banter.

Man, I loved this game so much though!

My only complaints:
I want to keep Yoshi, or at least have more Yoshi levels, or let me keep Yoshi once we beat the game as a sweet unlockable.
I wish the mini-mushroom was utilized more. A lot more. It was my favorite power-up in the DS game.
Wasn't always a fan of the Penguin Suit when slides were accidently engaged, so I wish there was a slightly different user input for it.

My Perfect Mario game:
• Super Mario World type map and level systems with lots of secrets and terrain changes. How about some alternate "normal" exits AND a secret keys?
• The return of all previous power-ups. But, have an items system like Mario 3 or World? And perhaps some levels could feature multiple paths or even preventive design measures to restrict certain modes of flying.
• You get to keep Yoshi, and different Yoshi colors have their own attributes like Super Mario World. Maybe it could be unlocked after some event in the game that persuades Yoshi to stick around, like feeding him enough or saving his buddies.
• Multiplayer like NSMB Wii and different characters have (slightly) different attributes like Mario 2 (Doki Doki Panic). Might be hard to do for segments that require fast movement and a faster character causing the screen to scroll and zoom out too fast for the other player(s). But, I guess that's what the bubble is for too.
• Pick up turnips and some enemies ala Mario 2 and throw them, and shells/blocks can be kicked up like in Mario World.
• Koopa Kids and Bowzer Junior are fine by me again, but have some cameos of Mario 2 villains!

I can dream. Fan projects are making this kinda' stuff happen.

Disagreed. Especially after playing DKCR...

It's an amazing platformer and head and shoulders above most but I still think it pales in comparison to 1, 3, World, etc, ESPECIALLY for the time. Great game, but not one of the best Marios and definitely not one of the best games ever made, IMHO.

Edit: Music coulda been better. A very really good ones but as a whole somewhat uninspired I think. Same goes for the art and graphics. And it's probably tired, but the 2 toads things mighta been fixed with a little more effort. Why not Toadette?

heh, Interesting how Warioland Shake it is never mentioned among the 2D platformers on Wii.

anyways no DKCR is better and Galaxy are better Mario games... but I still enjoyed it a lot.

@littledeadmonkey Never... where? It's like one of the most loved games around here. I feel like I'm a bad site owner for not having played it, with all the love it gets.
12/01/10, 03:55
Yeah, we talk about Wario Land all the time here. I LOVE that game.

And after playing DKCR, I still think NSMBWii is one of the best platformers ever. I'm not sure if I prefer it to Donkey Kong....both are so amazing.

@autokymatic

I liked the Mini Mushroom, too. I tried to get that as much as I could opposite the Fireball.

I never really cared for the Fireball when I was younger ("eh"), but when faced with that or the Iceball deal, I always favored his hot cousin. What? Hmm. Anyway, yeah, it just felt right.
