@bpumpkin777 I'm not trying to be a dick but I most definitely did hear the songs. In fact, I can make out 7 distinct songs in that trailer, I'd say 8 but one of them is overpowered by Rambi and I'm not sure what is going on there. The rest you can certainly hear. And the only one that is at all interesting to me is the 2nd one. 7 songs where only 1 is keeping me interested, it's just not good odds. I love pretty much every song in the DKC/DKC 2 games. I'm not saying the final game isn't going to have any interesting music, but I'm not super impressed with what I've heard so far, and I'm not deaf either, I am hearing the songs.

I've also watched a bunch of the E3 videos (multiple minutes each) and none of them had songs that caught my attention either. I'm not saying the songs are bad or anything, just that, put up against the series history, they are coming off as a bit underwhelming so far.

The thing is, for the most part, great music captures me instantly. I don't think I've ever watched a trailer and not been impressed by the music and then ended up impressed by the music in the final game. Maybe it'll happen, but I kind of know what I like when it comes to game music and I'm not hearing it so far.

So I'm some Nintendo troll because I'm saying the music I'M HEARING is underwhelming to me? It's not like I'm judging some abstract thing like gameplay from videos, or complaining that mountains have eyes or cartoon Link will suck. I'm listening to music and I'm not really excited by the music I'm listening to. I'm not even really complaining, just pointing out that it doesn't match the old soundtracks from what I've heard so far. It's not going to stop me from buying the game.

I fail to see how this is a huge deal.

Jesus Christ, are you guys still talking about the music? Because the thread became intolerable as soon as that started.

@Zero
I can hear the songs too, just not very well and not for anywhere near long enough for me to make any sort of definitive judgment on what the final game's music is going to be like. Compare it to the trailer you posted where the whole trailer has nothing but music playing the whole time. Big difference. Feel free to post any other DKC Returns trailers that have music that can be clearly heard and maybe I'll agree with you. Otherwise, I'm going to wait for the game to come out. Comparing a trailer or even a few trailers to two classic games from 15 years ago isn't going to give an accurate picture of anything most likely though.

And I never called you a troll. Gimme a break. I said you're overreacting. Maybe overreacting was too strong a word. Premature is probably more accurate.

@bpumpkin777
The flaw here is that no one here is actually judging the soundtrack. I mean, by the very nature the game isn't out we CAN'T judge the whole soundtrack. We're judging the small bits we can hear. And from what we can tell, some of it's underwhelming. That's the only point I think anyone here has made. No one has said the music as a whole sucks, that it will suck, or even that it might suck. Personally I think it could end up being a mixed bag. I remain hopeful the music will be awesome and it probably will be but in 2010 with unlimited budget the music SHOULD blow away anything done on an SNES cartidge, at the very least in terms of quality. Compositions is one thing but can anyone realistically compare the quality of music (instruments) in SMG to Super Mario World? No, SMG is lightyears ahead of it, as DKCR should be to DKC. I'm just slightly worried it won't be as mind blowing as it could be if Nintendo was taking it as seriously as they said they were. I don't think anyone here thinks the snippet at the 40 sec mark sounds good and that proves that the game will obviously have at least a few hit or miss tracks. The problem is Nintendo shouldn't make a mistake that bad (as others have said the quality is really poor at that part and barely above SNES levels) when the music is supposedly so important. And why did Miyamoto even make a point of this? Did he ever even mention anything about SMG's music when it was one of the greatest soundtracks of all time?

That's like Nintendo saying the graphics on the Wii will make you say "wow" when it really doesn't and that never happened.

DKC's music > Mario Galaxy music to me.

Of course I'm disappointed with what I heard in the music, it sounds like mostly generic jungle music and remixes of old themes. The original DKC music was atmospheric, yes, but it carried melody and beats and it was something you could hum along to, and would stick in your head. Not just random percussion and background animal noises like I'm hoping isn't what we get. I want to see some songs at least on par with songs like these:

If that's in response to my comparison of SMG to DKC I was referring to musical quality. As in...I think some tracks are better in Super Metroid but the quality of the instruments, sophistication, etc are much better in Other M. The music in DKC is arguably better than SMG's but there's no denying the musical quality between the two.

OK, I'm tired of talking about this. Let's just listen to old DKC songs instead. Woot woot! Dillo already posted a few. Here's a few more:

Yeah, the DKC games had some very beautiful music.

You'd think that the Metroid Prime composer would be the perfect choice to ape this music, since he also excels at atmospheric tunes. It's not like we've heard all that there is to hear... just little bites of a few levels. I'll wait until I pass judgment.

@Hinph
The problem is those games had a very distinct style that isn't easily imitated unless you wanna step on some toes. I doubt they're going for the same exact style as David Wise (did I get the name right or am I way off?) in this game, which is somewhat of a shame. It's like getting rid of Brad Fidel for Terminator 3. That guy had such a unique style I haven't really heard elsewhere and it's pretty much irreplaceable. I mean, I enjoyed quite a few of the tracks in T3 but T1 and T2 had this unmistakeable sound that was present throughout the whole move like Vangelis with Blade Runner (though that style has been imitated very successfully in Mass Effect for example).

I'm with anon on this one...not watching! Media blackout starts today!

I want this game SO BAD.

K that's the last thing I watch on this game. Fucking AWESOME looking!!!!

Once again the music seems hit or miss. Half the track was good and the other half was pretty....rough

More great news: 50 Deaths in DKCR in one sitting The game is hard.

I think it's gonna get great reviews, maybe close to Epic Yarn levels.

Apparently there are over 70 levels (double the number in the original DKC).

@carlosrox

Holy shit. That article just blew my mind.

I played the game co-operatively with a woman named Mabel who works at the Nintendo Treehouse, a branch of Nintendo where employees translate, write, test games and apparently hand-select tough ones to try on the press.

Is named after an employee at Treehouse (who handled Animal Crossing's US-ification).

Hey anon, you should rename this thread to the Official Donkey Kong Country Returns Thread. We've got lots of good stuff being posted here.
