Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 on the Wii

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 on the Wii!

So, I played the first two worlds and I have some impressions. In short: it's pretty good.

For someone like me, who suffered through Heroes, Black Knight and God forbid Shadow the Hedgehog, this game is glorious. But on its own, there are some things that hold it back from greatness, at least so far. It's like, imagine you're ten and your mom's been forcing you to eat a ton of broccoli and then suddenly she brings you some average ice cream. You're gonna love it, but that doesn't make it great.

I'm not going to explain how Sonic works. Because, it works just like the classic games. I'm only gonna focus on what I wanted to know before playing it. Design-wise, it's the sequel to Sonic 3. Without a doubt. From the moment you boot it up, it feels like one of the Genesis games in today's age. But then you start playing and find some small, but present annoyances. And it's those kinds of annoyances that have "Sega" written all over them. Dillo should know what I'm saying.

I will say this, though: Sonic 4 feels more like Sonic 3 than Sonic Advance, but there is some Advance in there. The level design is much more solid than that in the Advance titles. You hold right, you lose. But, there's a bit too much Homing Attack. Too many lined-up enemies in the air for you to kill with it. Too many speed bumpers. Like, seriously. There's no need to put a speed bumper before a loop. Let me charge my spin dash. Speaking of which, another "Sega" annoyance: you can't charge it with the 1 button. Only with 2. Why?

I actually love the graphics, and the music's alright. I would say, buy it. If you're a hardcore Sonic fan, you've suffered enough, man. You deserve this. Think back to Shadow the Hedgehog and be grateful you're playing this. You're not gonna cry in happiness, but you will not suffer. You will enjoy it.

Lolling at the Sonic Colors optimism*. You guys are at the very peak of the Sonic Cycle Coaster.

* I actually think it looks decent, too.

Ha, a Mario game playing like DKC wouldn't bother me much.

I see what you're saying though, it makes sense. Sega DID say numerous times that Sonic 4 would be true return to the classics, so I can see why some fans are upset.

Mind you, I absolutely hated New Super Mario Bros on the DS and didn't even bother getting it on the Wii.
It saddens me to read this. Truly, it does

Yeah NSMB DS was just decent, NSMB Wii was excellent. Shame the DS game turned so many off to the Wiiquel.

Ok, ok. I'll be reasonable. Compared to the DS version, how does the Wii version stack up (as far as playing it single player)?

The level design is much better and it's actually pretty challenging... I mean, somewhere between SMW and SMB3.

It's a great singleplayer Mario game. Buy it... and don't dismiss the multiplayer. If you can get a group to play with, it's a shit ton of fun.

Don't let the DS game scare you away.

@nate38
It probably didn't turn too many people off, since it sold a bajillion copies.

I'm not dismissing the multiplayer. I don't/wouldn't have gamer friends (well, at least none of them that want to play the Wii) to play NSMB Wii with. I also know it's not online so I plan on just going through it by myself.

Yeah, but the DS game sold TWO bajillion copies while the Wii game only sold one bajillion. That's a bajillion people turned away!

2D Mario is just money. Nintendo looks kind of crazy for sleeping on it so long. NSMB seems to be almost everyone's first DS game.

@anandxxx

Yeah, it really is. If Nintendo were Activision, we could expect a new 2D Mario every 9 months.

You know, I wouldn't turn down annualized 2D Metroid (although that wouldn't be the franchise to annualize).

I still don't see how NSMBW is THAT much better than the DS game. True, the level design is a little tighter and it's not as easy (and the fact that you progress through all 8 worlds instead of 6 helps longevity), but in terms of mechanics, music, visuals, and most of the gameplay, it's close enough. It's definitely an improvement and one of the best Wii games, but I've felt since day 1 that it wasn't really "NSMB DS done right" or anything.

I like NSMB DS well enough. Good variety in the levels, amazing multiplayer suite...

Anyone else played the demo for the Sonic Fan Remake?

It's impressive, though I'd be even more impressed if I could run it decently. But it does feel like Sonic.

That is much better than Sonic 4

A big old-school Sonic fan friend of mine came over yesterday to try Sonic 4. He nearly cried. Like others have said- It might have gotten away with the problems it has if it wasn't a numbered game.

Well, yeah... that is exactly what makes it such a better game. NSMB on DS didn't really get the mechanics or presentation wrong. It was just forgettable because the levels were boring breezes. Out of all of the Mario games, I have the least desire to go through it again.

... not so with the Wii game. It holds its own up against the rest of the entries, and I know I'm going to play through it many more times.

Yes, it is great. Would be better if the colors were more contrasting to tell what is what, but that's really my only complaint.

Yeah the first Act is a direct rip of Emerald Hill Zone act 1 from Sonic 2, but the other two are brand new. You wouldn't know it if you'd never played Sonic 2, though.

I'd love to see their takes on the more vertical zones like Chemical Plant, Mystic Jungle, or pretty much anything from Sonic 3 and Knuckles.
