Shantae: Risky's Revenge (Nintendo DSiWare) Review (10.0)  by

The music, the colors, the controls, this game is amazing!

I never played the GBC game so I wasn't sure what to expect but this is hands down one of the best 2-D games on the DS, and I'm only an hour in, it's simply amazing.

Seeing all the gorgeous pixel art created by the geniuses at Wayforward really makes me sad that we never got a proper 2-D Metroid game on the DS. Still, Shantae is the next best thing, it's right up there with the excellent Castlevania games from Iga-San.

BTW, played the Lords of Shadow demo last night, that game is NOT Castlevania, it has no vania flavor, they just slapped the name on, as expected. Still sad.

No VC stuff!!

Do you actually have and enjoy all of those games?

@-JKR-
I got stuck there, too, and went to the internet, after scouring the entire game world. The dog is in the forest. I won't say too much more so I don't spoil it, but explore and experiment with going back and forth between planes. You'll find it (in the same place as the zombie). For me, the problem was that I wasn't sure it was in the forest.

Regardless, this is also one of the best games I've played in forever. You'll love the first dungeon.

EDIT: Beaten to the point of death.

The first dungeon was indeed awesome, and when I got the Monkey Dance (lol) I just ran around jumping on walls for about 10 minutes. Not even trying to get anywhere, it was just so fun to do that I played for no reason other than just the joy of it. Awesome. Now I can't wait to go see where that monkey form can take me in those places where I couldn't go previously. This is the kind of gaming I live for.

I need to get back to this game. I opened Last Window and my game time has since been dedicated to that.

I'm really enjoying this game too. Fantastic stuff.

Monkey form rules. It's like the Spider Ball, but awesomer.

I need to go back and finish that game off. (But I kind of don't want it to end!)

I was lost for a good couple hours trying to find a certain power-up to make me pass a certain cliff to deliver a certain item that involves a rotten egg. It dawned on me that water puts out fire, fire burns grass and grass absorbs water (that's all I'm going to say on the subject, lol) and found that certain power-up. I swear I love this game more and more each time I play it. We need more 2d sidescroller on the DSiWare that has this much charm to it.

And just for shits and giggles, Music from the game that I love:

How do you pronounce Shantae? Is it Shant-ay? or Shant- aye? Or Shont-ay? Shont-aye?

It's bothering me

Is that... even possible?

Yeah, because you turn into a fucking monkey.

@shinriley
The composer is selling the tracks somewhere... iTunes?

@anon_mastermind
You pronounce it like Shenequa.

...

Shahn-tay.

Possible, AND a reality. Crazy, but true.

Oooh, the OST is amazing for this game, just brilliant.

Well I finally finished the game, took about 8 hrs and I found something like 20 out of the 31 "special items", I thought I did a good job of exploring but I guess there is still a lot more magic jam scattered around the lands.

The game is amazing, and I won't say anything about the ending, but it's set up for a sequel really well, I just hope we don't have to wait five or ten years. I want more Shantae NOAW!!!

Shantae 3DS please!

PS: The game was kind of short but it could have been a retail release, I wonder if they sold a lot of copies being solely on DSiWare and not really receiving any advertising or hype except for Mark Bozon pimping it on IGN and getting Craig Harris on board with the pimping (which in turn got RMC on board with the pimping, but it kind of ends there, except for message board pimping). It deserves to sell a ton, it was much better than many of Nintendo's own efforts at 2-D platforming on the DS, like Princess Peach and Yoshi's Island DS.

Those are Tose's and Artoon's efforts...
10/24/10, 17:44
After playing Rocket Slime, I understand why Tose is kind of a punchline...

@anandxxx
Well true, but they're Nintendo IPs and Nintendo commissioned the games and oversaw their production and marketed and published them.

@Pandareus
I don't get it? I thought both Rocket Slime and Peach were pretty good, not great but decent. Some inside joke I'm not aware of?

I loved Rocket Slime, Pandareus hated it.

Here is the composer's page - pick your own price.

I've only gotten a couple hours into Shantae, and it's kinda hard to tell when you need to walk off the screen to get to the next screen! I was stuck for a while because of that (and I also couldn't find the shop to buy the map the first time I went through town, lol. Got it now. And thaving the map was the only way I was able to find the Zombie cart too).

@heliumsky
In order to find the place to buy a map, you need a map! Just downloaded it tonight- seems completely AWESOME so far!
10/28/10, 02:46
Argh!

Where is the damn Boat House!?!
10/31/10, 03:55
@Pandareus
All the way to the right of the map.

So I finished the game today. Pretty cool final sequence and boss. Overall I really enjoyed this one, and I think I'll go back and explore some more as I apparently missed like 12 hidden items. Every DSi owner should have this game.
