Shantae: Risky's Revenge (Nintendo DSiWare) Review (10.0)  by

The music, the colors, the controls, this game is amazing!

I never played the GBC game so I wasn't sure what to expect but this is hands down one of the best 2-D games on the DS, and I'm only an hour in, it's simply amazing.

Seeing all the gorgeous pixel art created by the geniuses at Wayforward really makes me sad that we never got a proper 2-D Metroid game on the DS. Still, Shantae is the next best thing, it's right up there with the excellent Castlevania games from Iga-San.

BTW, played the Lords of Shadow demo last night, that game is NOT Castlevania, it has no vania flavor, they just slapped the name on, as expected. Still sad.

@anon_mastermind Is that... lower than normal retail costs?

And is that only for Canadians?

Yeah, it's a couple bucks under the normal $20. Some places charge $24.99 though, which is absurd. AFAIK this is only available for canadians, via Amazon.ca.

I was trying to finagle a way to get this game onto my DSi when I remembered HEY! I got a $20 gift card for ordering Metroid: Other M through Wal-Mart! I jumped online and snagged me a $20 Nintendo points card. Shantae, here I come!

I'm loving this game. This is the kind of game that I was hoping Wiiware would have. Classic 2D games to where developers can work on introducing new franchises. Nothing fancy, nothing groundbreaking, just a fun 2D game. Start if off as an 8 bit classic, then 16, then work your way up to 64 :)

And yes, I know about that Bit Boy game.

We should pit DSiWare against WiiWare one day, just for kicks and giggles.

@anandxxx
I have WAAAAAY more DSiWare game than Wiiware games. Its not even close.
10/13/10, 21:01
I have more, too, but there's a lot of good stuff on WiiWare that I just haven't picked up yet. Also, WiiWare has to compete with the VC.

List time! Who's got a list?
10/13/10, 21:33
A list... to compare DSiWare games against WiiWare games? Or who has more games for which system?

I R CONFUZZLED.

DSiWare >>>>>> WiiWare

Although WiiWare did have Lost Winds, which was awesome, and is apparently getting a sequel in the year 3000.

Wut?
Edit: oh, i get it. Yeah :/

I'd have to say WiiWare is better overall, but it isn't because of Nintendo's output, which has been stronger on DSiWare.

Poor Lost Winds 2. I bet it sold, like, TWO copies. And then they made Kinectimals.

@GameDadGrant
A list of worthwhile DSiWare games vs. worthwhile WiiWare games. WiiWare has quite a bit of seniority, but DSiWare's a scrappy challenger.
10/14/10, 03:59
Whoa, Lost Winds 2 came out? In North America? Is it good? Man I totally spaced on that one, must have got very little media coverage.

@deathly_hallows

The gaming press didn't care, but it's okay, Nintendo didn't either.
10/14/10, 07:46
@deathly_hallows I thought it was better than the first, as did many reviewers, hence the higher scores. It just felt overall more polished, and it introduced a summer/winter season changing mechanic with a lot of cool puzzles built around it. If you liked the first I'd definitely suggest picking up the sequel.

Now, for all the WiiWare haters out there... list time. These are the WiiWare games I own:

And Yet It Moves
Art of Balance
Art Style: Orbient
Art Style: Light Trax
Art Style: Rotozoa
Bit.Trip Beat
Bit.Trip Core
Bit.Trip Void
Bit.Trip Runner
Bomberman Blast
Cave Story
Gradius Rebirth
LostWinds
LostWinds: Winter of the Melodias
Maboshi's Arcade
Mega Man 9
Mega Man 10
NyxQuest
Strong Bad Episode 1
Strong Bad Episode 2
Swords & Soldiers
Tomena Sanner
World of Goo

To be honest the only ones I wasn't happy with were Maboshi's Arcade, Rotozoa, and Tomena Sanner. Maybe Gradius too but only because it is so damn short, you can literally beat it in an hour or so.

I never really understand when people down WiiWare, I love it.

I have to throw my hat into the ring of positive Shantae:RR reviewers. WOW. This is actually one of the best games I've played in a LONG, LONG time. They just seemed to nail everything next to perfectly. The only thing I have any issue with is that it seems to think you probably played the first one, and I missed it. So I don't know who these people are they're talking about. But who cares when the gameplay is spot on fantastic? Not I.

I do have a question, though. I'm a little stuck and probably missing something obvious but I need some help. I got through the lilac fields and into the forest, and to the chef's house at the very end, but she says she needs me to find her dog and I have no idea what to do now. Also someone said to visit a Zombie Cart? I don't see that either. Any tips?

Everyone seems to get stumped there.

If you go through all the way to the right of the "bottom layer" of the forest, you eventually reach a pit you can't cross, right? Just go one layer up, go right, one layer down.

edit - That's probably more confusing than it should be. I say "bottom layer" because of the map. I mean the plane that is most in the foreground. When you reach that pit on the right, find the spot that will make you jump back a plane, go right, then jump back to the foreground.

There is a section of the forest where you need to jump "towards the screen", on the right side, to access part of the stage you couldn't before.

Edit: damn, beaten. JKR, it even gets better Love Shantae so far!

Doh, of course. Here I was trying to get across that pit by going through the little cave hole and then trying everything in the world on the locked door inside!

Thanks guys.

And again, if you don't have this game and have a DSi, get your butt to the DSi Shop and buy this NOW! I don't think there's a thing on any downloadable network I've enjoyed more so far, across any system. THIS is what downloadable gaming should be!
