...seeing as you're the group of gamers whose opinions I trust the most. Picking up Other M today was a bit of a strange experience--the guy at Play-N-Trade revealed that one of his coworkers mistakenly told everyone that the game released today, so the store had preorder folks coming in all day to try to get it. However, this particular employee was pretty upset about the whole ordeal and decided to sell it to me anyway...then promptly called his manager and quit. I told him I didn't want to cause a fuss and would come back Tuesday for it, but he took a devil-may-care attitude and let me buy the game regardless (he was actually quite friendly to me, just upset about the mistake the coworker made). So that interesting story of acquisition aside, I now have the game and have played roughly 40 minutes or so (just beat the first boss). It's quite early so my previews aren't going to be very in-depth, so I'll make this quick for now: -Controls are better than expected, feels fun and pleasantly quick like Samus should -Voice acting better than expected; the ancillary soldiers and such sound pretty good -Samus herself seems to be directed to sound fairly cold and emotionless, which usually works, but sometimes her delivery is stilted (so far) -I'm kind of missing Retro's attention to environmental detail, but the areas still look decent enough -Killing classic Metroid enemies like Geemers and Rios in 3rd-person is somewhat cathartic. They made a 3rd-person Metroid feel work rather well, and I like the Wiimote so far -You can't seem to wall-jump off every wall, just select surfaces -Not sure what to make of the story yet, I kinda like a lot of it and some of it is sort of overbearing; we'll see. The direction and transitions are pretty nice though -Pretty cool first boss -Casper's right, it needs more music during gameplay That's all for now. I mainly made this thread for everyone else to post their impressions too, but I wanted to give a few of my own first. URL to share (right click and copy)

I just beat the game. Fantastic! It isn't very Metroidy, though in a few ways it is more similar to classic Metroid than the Prime games were (bless them). And while I'm a huge Metroid fan, I've played enough traditional-style Metroid games in the last decade thanks to Retro and Intelligent Systems. I was looking for a reboot of the Metroid franchise and...I got it. AND it came in style. I was hoping EAD Tokyo would take the stab at the reboot, but Team Ninja seem to have been good enough for the job. Kudos to them. I had my doubts but they pulled through. My only complaints are similar to CB200's: upgrade acquisition and an anti-climatic end. Like CB I also died 7 times before figuring out the silly thing I had to do to cue the ending. Very anti-climatic and badly designed; there should be some indication of what to do. Besides, that whole first-person scenario was an unnecessary thing to do. What was the point, really? Confuse players during the ending sequence? The lack of music bothered me at first but then I realized that this is the most tense Metroid game I've played, so while melodic music worked in a less tense game like Metroid Prime, such tunes wouldn't do it for this game. I thought the sound design was fine. Maybe a few classic jingles when you acquired items and saved could've helped, but whatever. Other than that...can't say I have much to complain about. The gameplay was very solid and action-packed, the controls were very, very well done, especially considering it was just using the Wiimote, and something's gotta be said about the brilliant camerawork; it never failed to show me exactly what I wanted to see. Oh, and I adored Samus's voice. Overall...loved it. Going for 100% now. "Any objections, Adam?" |

@DrFinkelsteinNot sure where you are exactly, but two places I'm thinking of... 1. Are you in an area where you just looked inside a cage room, Samus had some inner dialogue about the mutilated scientist she found, etc? If so, go into the room where there are a bunch of computers and a holding tank in the middle. Blow the tank up and look at the ground...round, rolling things maybe?
2. Are you stuck in an area where you can flip on and off one of the holographic displays and it's a bit of a smaller, but higher room? If so, turn the device on so you see the jungle area and go to the end of the room...notice a spot where the projection is clearly faltering? Perhaps it might be a'bomb'inable for you to damage it further, but it can't hurt, yeah?If those aren't it, then post again with more details and I'll try and help. |

Nintendo found a way to make a third pillar for their third pillar. If this game does alright, they'll have 2D Metroid, 3D Metroid, and 2.5D Metroid branches to switch between.
I wonder, though... could they combine the best things about Prime and Other M? Like, retain the snappy, exciting gameplay of Other M in a huge, terrestrial environment? I don't really think they could. It's hard to imagine a more expansive, exploratory Other M. Maybe with the nunchuk, zoomed out a bit a la God of War with the same auto-aim as Other M, but I'm not sure that would be very enjoyable. |
