the story is just there to give your grinding a meaning. I thought the story was cute, but that is not why I am playing this game. I am playing this game to conquer te hardest bosses and to get the ultimate gear; until that happes, i will not stop playing this game.

Right well... I mean that's just the backbone story that puts the gameplay into context. All I was getting at is, if one wanted to, play through the "campaign" and just enjoy the narrative (or lack thereof, whatever) or just grind and get the best gear and whatnot. Wasn't really trying to imply the game had this incredible story or anything, lol.

Yeah I was just pointing out that the story is... well, there. Kind of unfortunate really because of how addictive it is. The gameplay is great but it's lacking so much in the story aspect and even the music which I pointed out a few posts back.

Speaking of ultimate gear, is there anything in this game at all that's a one time thing? I've heard a few times in the game that you have to choose wisely on what alchemy items to use but is there really anything you don't be able to get more than once and if you screw it up, you're done for?

Yeah, the story just being "there" is pretty typical of the series. The games aren't like say, Final Fantasy or something where the characters themselves get really involved and there's a big showdown between two rivals of good and evil. I mean sure, DragonQuest has the good guys and the bad guys, but it's less about the hero and more about the journey. Something like that. Jeremy Parish said it better than I did.

I like the music, though. Good stuff.

As far as ultimate gear, I don't know any details yet, sorry.

Ah okay, well I don't mind it that much if the game is fun This is actually my first Dragon Quest game so I didn't know that it was a "staple" of the series. I kind of want to pick up DQV after this but I'll probably be so burnt out on it already that I should probably wait a while. Kind of strange that it's also like 10$ more expensive.

@VofEscaflowne

dragon quest 5 is very hard to find if you dont feel like paying the fullprice tag on square-enix.com; however, the game is simply amazing. I think it is the only story driven DQ game in the whole series. The game really does a great job at attatching yourself to the main characters. I nearly cried playing that game and I managed to be pissed off at the story's enemies multiple times. I "wanted" to kill those mother fuckers, if you catch my drift.

Oh, more reason to pick it up then. Does it also share the same vocation system in DQIX? They do have a copy at Wal-Mart here for either 40 or 45$... maybe I'll pick it up one of these days if I feel like another RPG after this one.

There is no vocation system inDQIX but DQ5 has a system that later evolved into pokemon. I would go as far to say that pokemon was inspired by DQ5. DQ5 hasits own set of human characters; however, the game has a monster mechanic. You can allow monters to join your party and youlevel them up and equip them just like you would a human charcter. . .. I played the game 2 weeks before dq9 came out so i rushed through the game with human characters; however, it is my understanding that the game is very deep when you get into the world of monster collecting.

I bought it the Friday after it came out. I'm not as fast as some of you guys. So far I'm only up to Tyrantula or whatever that boss is called after I reached Bloomingdale. I wonder when I'm going to find the person to change vocations. I'm playing all by myself but I'll build a party when I go back to level 1.

I tend to stay away from JRPGs for the most part but so far. Dragon Quest IX has been a pleasant surprise. It's supposed to be as traditional as they come but the ability to actually see your enemies before engaging in battle removes one of the annoying things I hate about them. Furthermore, I've never felt the need to level grind since I'm taking my time and trying to explore everything I can. I'm playing solo so that makes some boss fights harder, but I get it right after enough tries.

The combat is passable, although I find some instances where the game cheaps out. For example, you're confronting a group of enemies and one prevents you from attacking using a roar or something, while summoning more party members. You're trying to kill one party member, but you have to hope you're no prevented from doing so in the meantime. This might be a petty gripe because I'm going solo, but it still annoys me.

Uh, you haven't found out how to change vocations yet and you're in Bloomingdale? Wow What's the name of the place now... (I swear I never notice these things) Alltrades Abbey? That was quite a while back, haha.

@Tranquilo

Also, what do you mean by "I'm playing solo so that makes some boss fights harder"? Have you not gotten some additional party members at the Quester's Rest (the Inn in Stornway)?
07/30/10, 09:17
Simple question for those that beat it.

I'm in the final area right now (I assume I am...) and is there a point of no return? They made it sound as if eating the fygg wouldn't let you go back but it seems like I can... that it takes a while for it to take effect I guess. But it's safe to return back and save right? With a single save slot, I can't imagine them screwing over the player like this though but just want to take precautions.

Check out the DQVC today if you haven't! Unless if this is different from person to person but I imagine the general theme isn't. Today is the Summer Fayre kickoff week. Just got a pair of sunglasses for my mage and he's now a "self-proclaimed king of cool" That just looks so silly but it was actually better than what I had.
07/30/10, 19:09
@VofEscaflowne

there is no point of return. you go go through the final dungeon all the way to the final boss and stand right in front of him and then walk all the way back out and go back down to the world. And yea, I got the Summer Fayre as well; however, the glasses are not an armor upgrade for me, but they do look snappy with my shimmering tuxedo.

Ok... so I've been playing the game for around 20 hours... what is the DQVC? Should I have found it yet? Is it in-game, or what? Should I RTFM....?
07/30/10, 20:19
You could RTFM, but I can also just tell you: at the Quester's Rest. The girl to the right (your right) of Krak-pot.
07/30/10, 20:33
Much obliged, sir.
07/30/10, 21:28
@GameDadGrant

sometimes the girl sells really good things. I got a miracle sword from her at around my 40 hour mark and that lasted me about 20 game hours until I got my upgrade.
07/30/10, 22:04
@VolfEscaflowne-I did pass alltrades Abbey's but the person who was supposed to be there, wasn't and I couldn't find him.

Edit: I went back and figured out how to get to where he is.

@Panderus: When that feature was first introduced I glanced through it, I only found out recently when I was in level 27ish. Obsiouly it's going to be a pain to try to get party members to my level so I'll just start out when I go back to level 1. Speaking of which, could any of you recommend some good skills combinations?

Although it's harder, I think I like playing alone, but for the harder bosses, especially the ones from the special maps, I think I'll have no choice but to use back-up.

How can you have more fun playing with just one character? I get pissed off just waiting for the 6+ enemies to take their slow ass turns as I wait for my 4 moves, let alone a single move...
