At long last, I finally beat the game. The battle against Corvus was a little easier than expected. But I suppose that could be because I spent a good deal of time grinding levels so that I would be prepared. My party was all at least Level 50 or 52, so I was dealing damage pretty easily. Especially my Martial Artist... man! Once you get that vocation up in levels, not many enemies pose a really imposing threat, lol! Anyway, the main quest is complete. Turns out that there is a lot of post-game stuff to explore and do. And maybe (?) someday I'll get around to checking it out. But I do have a backlog that could literally tower over me, so I'm going to move on to another game. Not sure which one, but I think I'm going to take a break from the JRPG genre for a while. DragonQuest IX demanded a lot from me, so I'm going to need a little while before I dive back into another game like that. I won't say that I won't check into DQIX once in a while to do some of the quests and post-game stuff, but it's not going to be my main focus anymore. So many more games to play...! I'm glad I was able to finish it, though. I may not have "completed" the game, but I took down the main "final boss" and I feel good about that. The entire adventure was so big and epic... it's funny to think and realize I've been playing this since this summer. Seems like so long ago, lol! Who else has "beaten" the game? How's the post-game stuff? Worth checking out? |

So I beat the game without grinding! Yes!! It took me about 15 die and retries so I did level up once or twice on my way back to the boss, but I found a decent strategy and stuck with it. Basically, use the Minstrel: Use Gigaslash until 20 or so MP left (save some for emergency healing) and then just egg on my Martial Artist on every turn, or play whipping boy for my priest. Priest: Heal on almost every turn. Use multi-heal and More-heal, and sometimes use Insulate to protect self from breath-based attacks Martial Artist: Psyche up on almost every turn. Combined with egg on by the Minstrel, she can get up to 100 tension quickly and deal 10-12x the damage. Frustratingly, the boss often cast a disruptive wave when I had high tension, but at least it took away one of his moves. Mage: Channel Anger and Frizzle = 225 damage, which is pretty good.
About 80% of the time, after he laughs he will cast the uber magic spell that deals like 180 damage. So I always defended with every party member after he laughed. It payed off.
Well, I'm glad to be done with this game. Final count = 65 hours, which is way more than I care to put into a single player game these days. I enjoyed most of it though, and the game has a certain charm to it that made the quest thoroughly enjoyable. The battle system is also one of the best I've see in a "classic" JRPG, outside of the Paper Mario and M&L games. I'm gonna set this down and probably never play it again, but it was a good ride all around. I know there is a ton of post-game content, but after 65 hours I've had my fill for a good while. |
