Hey, anyone happen to know offhand a good place to get some metal slimes near the place where you can change classes? I'm trying to do the quest to unlock the class with the FOURCE and you need to kill two metal slimes in a certain way but I barely ever see metal slimes...

Not "near" Alltrades Abbey (you got the spell to teleport anyway, right?) but the cave where Marion's kidnappers brought her... know the place? There's a certain spot inside that cave where you see tons of those mech enemies (hunters, I think they're called?): wander around in that spot and you'll see quite a few Metal Medleys.

edit - Oh, you specifically require Metal Slimes. That dungeon where you had to direct beams of lights towards a door to open it. Know what I'm talking about?

Ah got it, thanks.

Man, I feel like I've been stuck at Alltrades Abbey forever but now I FINALLY get to move forward again.

Going to go ahead and revive this.

Any players in the New York City area? Just looking to see if there are any other DQIX players from Negative World that I can meet =)

Usually every Tuesday a group of people get together at the Nintendo World Store after 5:00, though I've only been there once. Some really good maps passed out there including one that features all metal king slims on one floor and a map with plenty of S and A rank chests to get some of the rarer items.

I don't need the tags anymore since I'm at 76 thanks to the very successful haul at the Simon Styles mall event (wish I could've also made the gamestop and Best Buy events but... oh well) but would just like to meet up with more players.

Right now 160+ hours into the game, revocated all my characters once, and working on trying to get some better gear.

I just beat the Garth Goyle, damn he was tough.

I got the Santa Hat from the DQVC, it's actually pretty good on defense, I'm nearing the final boss now.

At long last, I finally beat the game. The battle against Corvus was a little easier than expected. But I suppose that could be because I spent a good deal of time grinding levels so that I would be prepared. My party was all at least Level 50 or 52, so I was dealing damage pretty easily. Especially my Martial Artist... man! Once you get that vocation up in levels, not many enemies pose a really imposing threat, lol!

Anyway, the main quest is complete. Turns out that there is a lot of post-game stuff to explore and do. And maybe (?) someday I'll get around to checking it out. But I do have a backlog that could literally tower over me, so I'm going to move on to another game. Not sure which one, but I think I'm going to take a break from the JRPG genre for a while. DragonQuest IX demanded a lot from me, so I'm going to need a little while before I dive back into another game like that. I won't say that I won't check into DQIX once in a while to do some of the quests and post-game stuff, but it's not going to be my main focus anymore. So many more games to play...!

I'm glad I was able to finish it, though. I may not have "completed" the game, but I took down the main "final boss" and I feel good about that. The entire adventure was so big and epic... it's funny to think and realize I've been playing this since this summer. Seems like so long ago, lol!

Who else has "beaten" the game? How's the post-game stuff? Worth checking out?

Stuck at the final boss, levels 39, 40, 41 and 42. Ive already spent some time revocating for extra skill points and I don't enjoy grinding...this is gonna be tough.

@anon_mastermind

You may not like it, but I highly suggest grinding. I was stumped at The Kingdom of Gitt for a while. I took some time to grind my characters up to Level 50 or so, and then more or less steam-rolled every enemy after that.

Grinding is kind of a pain, but try this: Put on a podcast of your choice, find an area that rewards your characters with a lot of XP after each battle, and grind while listening. I went with Radio Free Nintendo's podcast, because their show lasts for about two hours. Do this a couple of nights a week and your party should be good to go. You'll be able to progress through the game just fine, and the hours you'll spend grinding will seem to go by in a flash. Multi-tasking can make time fly, I've found. Good luck!

Confession time: I also got stuck at the last boss, and thus still haven't finished the game.
12/15/10, 22:34
I was actually on my way to beating him (I think), then he pulls out this move that does 130+ damage to each party member. Fucking ridiculous.

@GameDadGrant
Yeah I'll grind a bit while watching football or hockey, I guess.

@anon_mastermind

So will you be watching sports to alleviate the tedium of grinding?

Or will you be grinding to alleviate the tedium of watching sports?

I'm so confused!

@Pandareus

What levels are your party at?

anon_mastermind's team is low 40's, and I couldn't even get past the area before the final area with levels that low. I'm not sure how he made it to the end of the game like that. His team's skills and his strategies must be better than mine were.

But after my team got up to Level 50, pretty much nothing stood in my way. (my team consisted of: Minstrel, Mage, Martial Artist, and Priest)
12/15/10, 22:43
Wow, I have the exact same team. Did you ever revocate? When you revocate you can get your new vocation up to level 10-15 pretty quickly and gain some skill points. Save those, switch back and allot the skill points to areas of interest. I think that's how I made it this far.
12/16/10, 00:53
No, I did not change vocations - I stuck with my original choices from the get-go. I suppose I should have taken advantage of the options available at All-Trades Abbey, but... oh well. All's well that ends well.
12/16/10, 04:39
Apparently I haven't played this game since October 7th, because I spent all of this time getting the FOURCE and then was finally ready to move forward and then grad school + other games came around and I never went back.

Going to try to get back into the game in the near future though. Then again, I just started Might & Magic and 999 showed up in the mail...
12/16/10, 04:54
So I beat the game without grinding! Yes!! It took me about 15 die and retries so I did level up once or twice on my way back to the boss, but I found a decent strategy and stuck with it. Basically, use the
Minstrel: Use Gigaslash until 20 or so MP left (save some for emergency healing) and then just egg on my Martial Artist on every turn, or play whipping boy for my priest.
Priest: Heal on almost every turn. Use multi-heal and More-heal, and sometimes use Insulate to protect self from breath-based attacks
Martial Artist: Psyche up on almost every turn. Combined with egg on by the Minstrel, she can get up to 100 tension quickly and deal 10-12x the damage. Frustratingly, the boss often cast a disruptive wave when I had high tension, but at least it took away one of his moves.
Mage: Channel Anger and Frizzle = 225 damage, which is pretty good.

About 80% of the time, after he laughs he will cast the uber magic spell that deals like 180 damage. So I always defended with every party member after he laughed. It payed off.

Well, I'm glad to be done with this game. Final count = 65 hours, which is way more than I care to put into a single player game these days. I enjoyed most of it though, and the game has a certain charm to it that made the quest thoroughly enjoyable. The battle system is also one of the best I've see in a "classic" JRPG, outside of the Paper Mario and M&L games.
I'm gonna set this down and probably never play it again, but it was a good ride all around. I know there is a ton of post-game content, but after 65 hours I've had my fill for a good while.

I am going to try and run through this game over the next two weeks. I am currently at 4 hours and loving it so far.
02/08/11, 14:45
i'm going to get this game and DQ VI at the same time..
02/08/11, 17:45
Just beat the Leviathan and I am loving this game more and more. I love the focus on little stories in each town that are actually quite emotional at times. One of the best games I have ever played, I may take up Dragon Quest V after this.
