Fess up! Do you get irritated/annoyed when people diss something you enjoy? [roundtable]

Perhaps even ANGRY? Even though they aren't making a personal attack on you? (I guess it could be considered a personal attack, but I mean something that adversely affects you or someone important to you directly.)

I always thought of myself as fairly level-headed, but I have to admit, I do get annoyed by what I perceive as unfounded ignorance towards something I like. Like, I was listening to some recent episode of Rebel FM (I only listen occasionally, when they discuss a game that interests me (or when Robert Ashley is on)), and they were talking about Nintendo, and blood was just pouring from my ears. I was like, "How could they be so fucking stupid and ignorant about an entire library?! Their job is to play and write about games!! They seem knowledgeable about every other console! And their tastes are both elitist and overly mainstream, while still being abysmal! WTF!!"

But it doesn't always happen. If someone was to tell me the concrete reasons why they preferred one thing to another, I don't think I'd have any problem with their opinion. It's just that stupid, dismissive attitude that comes from ignorance, rather than personal experience. I seriously hate that shit. Especially when it seems to be the 'majority opinion', an accepted 'truth' among the community.

I can recognize that the stem of that feeling is some sort of synaptical malfunction, though, a lack of maturity, where even though I know that I shouldn't give a shit about what people say, ESPECIALLY if it comes from a position of ignorance, I get irritated, anyway. Emotion should never override reason. There is a legitimate reason to be irritated by dismissive ignorance in the press, though, since it's so widespread. It probably HAS directly influenced the games that the Wii has received.

Anyway, I also dislike a lot of things, many of them sacred cows, so maybe I should check my own behavior, but I'd like to think that I follow my internal rules and at least speak from personal experience with reasonable arguments.

So how's about youse guys?

If Daemon is a Hatfield, then Nintendo fans must be McCoys.

Yeah, it's never a good idea to piss off doctors or waiters. They have... ways of getting even.

@missypissy
So you like the new stuff better than Vs.? (I haven't really heard anything newer than that.)

File me under the " Only when they are speaking from total ignorance" category. Other than that it only comes down to preferences and that's something there is no objective right answer for.

Agreed, same here.

The ignorance of you earthlings confuses and enrages me!!!

I used to more in the past. Definitely, as Anand stated, more annoying when the people don't even have rational reasons backing up their opinions. I guess that is part of why I started this forum, it's just not fun posting on forums where a bunch of people are dissing great things with little or no logic behind their dismissals.

But I think the older I get, the less I care what others think. Or maybe I only think that because I have a forum to hang out on where when people are dissing things I love *coughs* Anand and Metroid Prime *coughs* they at least back up their disses with sound reasoning. Usually.

@Zero

I agree. Backing up opinions with reasoning makes all the difference. At least then you can see the "truth" behind the opinions.

Which is why Link's Awakening is superior to A Link To The Past, amirite?!?

Hey Grant, the pic you're hotlinking from CrystalXP.net is telling you to not leech. Won't you stop leeching?

You leech.

Your handle should be GameLeechGrant.

@GameDadGrant No, but it's why it didn't annoy me when you said it!

@Pandareus

Gah, stupid Crystalxp.com or whatever. Is it really that big of a deal that I linked a pic from your website? Sheesh. I fixed it, thanks for the heads-up, Panda!

@Zero

Hee hee... I shall convert you! I shall make you see the light, and recognize the superiority of the Gameboy game! Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow. Probably not the day after that.... but someday...! ...maybe...

If someone can back up their opinion with a reasonable argument, I don't have a problem with that. However, most of the time forum trolls can't. Going back to the Morgan Webb thing about SMG2. Her complaining that it's too cartoony would be like me saying I don't like strawberries because they are too red.
06/09/10, 20:33
Honestly at this point I don't think anything could beat out Link to the Past and Super Metroid for me. In a way it wasn't just that they were awesome, but that they had these elements and mechanics that were still fairly new to me at the time. Whereas now even "new" mechanics in games are generally just rehashes of old ones to some degree. Also I think I was a bit less critical back then, and a bit more in the position (being young without tons of responsibilities) to really enjoy games.

So as it stands, those will probably end up being my GOTFs.

@Phalanx Actually though you know, as much as I love the Galaxy games, I feel like the character designs (especially bosses) HAVE taken the cartooney-ness of the series to a whole new level. Which wouldn't necessarily be a negative if they were well designed (aesthetically), but most of them are just blobs of some sort with eyes. I sort of miss the Mario 64-esque style (in character design... the environments/etc. in Galaxy have amazing style.)

But then, Morgan Webb... lol.

@Zero

Yeah, I can understand that for sure. In fact, the fact that those elements and stuff were so new to me in Link's Awakening was because I didn't play A Link To The Past first. Subtle things that were in LA that were not in ALttP slightly disappointed me when I finally played the SNES game.

And when I say "subtle" I'm talking like, tiny, tiny little details. I actually remember telling a buddy of mine that I liked the Gameboy game better because when Link jumped from higher ground to lower ground, he would do flips in mid-air on the way down. Link doesn't do that in the SNES game, and I was sad that "detail" wasn't there.

Silly, I know. But back then it made a difference to me for some reason.

Also, I disagree. I think the boss character designs are better in Galaxy. In SM64, most of the bosses were just geometric shapes with eyes. (King Bob-Omb, Big Bully... even Wiggler to an extent - *just a bunch of blobs strung together* and of course, King Whomp, which was just a huge rectangle pretty much) Galaxy and Galaxy 2 have bosses like Bowser Jr.'s machines, the mechanical driller, Rollo Armadillo, the giant bug thing, and a more fully realized and animated King Koopa.

@anandxxx

Vs. is actually my least favorite Pearl Jam album. Personally, Pearl Jam hit their stride in 1998 with Yield (my favorite album). It's hard to describe why I love Pearl Jam so much, but these two songs help show why I find them so amazing. First song is "Do the Evolution", which is my favorite song and then Sad, which is a B-side that was dropped from their 6th Studio album for whatever reason.

Do the Evolution
Sad

Also because of this. First one is a joke song they put in their third record, first played live in 2009. Second one they dressed up like Devo and played Whip It.

Bugs
Whip It

Link's Awakening sure is a quality game, and I'd put it above LttP if it came out first. Either way, I like OoT and TWW better than both of those. ;)

Super Metroid is the king of its series though.

I do get irritated and even angry at some posters...happens a lot of the WoW forums. Though not for me as I've learned to tune out most trolls...quality of trolls over there is pretty low-grade, but there are a few gems that are worth a laugh.

it's the posters that can ALMOST, ALMOST form a coherent argument, but don't quite it, and yet they skirt the line between a valid point and trolling just to troll. Seems kinda odd to explain, but I'm sure you can figure it out.

Of course I get upset!

Nobody has anything to say good about NASCAR ever. EVER.
06/10/10, 00:15
To be honest, I disagree with a lot of you. I don't think you need to have a rational reason to explain why you don't like the things that people are discussing here. It's funny that Pearl Jam was already brought up because I was going to use them as an example myself. I think Pearl Jam sucks. Could I give a rational reason why? Well, I could try, but in the end, what's the point? I'm not going to change your opinion, and I wouldn't even want to, I wouldn't want to take away your enjoyment of something.

That's why I try not to talk too much about things I don't like and while I've been known to falter, it's often because I'm being forced to defend my views. I don't think that's necessary. Other examples include giving impressions, but even then I tend to keep it short when talking about games I don't like. Unless I'm asked to go in depth which gets into defending my views again.

But I've also been guilty of making people defend their views in the past (Pandareus and LOZ comes to mind). When I do it's usually not because I'm angry, but because it's someone who's opinion I respect and I want to understand where they're coming from.

That's because NASCAR sucks!

@Jargon

There's nothing wrong with thinking Pearl Jam sucks. If you tried to convince someone else of that without having a good argument, that would be wrong.
06/10/10, 04:58
@Phalanx

Well, if we're talking about trolls, I don't think they're really trying to convince anyone. Their problem is that they're voicing their opinion on a Nintendo forum, just to cause trouble and to try to make people feel bad. But if someone on the 360 board or on a podcast says Wii sucks, it's not gonna bother me, even if they don't back it up well.
06/10/10, 05:10
Makes sense.
06/10/10, 05:23
So FUCKING true on this forum. Some people just make complete douche bags of themselves sometimes, even though they're normally not like that. (I hope.) That's what I noticed from here anyway. Then they get all protective and bs, even though they're clearly being irrational bastards at the time.
