Official game database thread for new games in the database, reviews, etc. [community]

Hey guys, I decided to make a thread to call attention to one of our major features here, the Game Database. I'll probably bump it from time to time to let everyone know about new hot games that have been added that you can add to your collections or rate.

First, let me explain a few things about rating games and adding them to your collection. Everyone (yes, even you -1ers!) can rate games and add them to your collection. This is a pretty simple process. Go up to the menu above and select GAMES -> Game Database, or just CLICK HERE. You will see a list of titles you can browse, and you can also search for specific titles with the search feature at the top, and even add games you can't find with the little bar at the top right above the search functionality that says "Submit a Game (keywords)". To add a game to your collection you check the box under "Owned" next to the game, and to rate it you select a number under "You" (you can add without rating and vice versa, if you want to). You can do one game or a whole page at a time, and when you are ready to submit your collection and ratings updates, click the "CLICK TO UPDATE THIS PAGE OF YOUR COLLECTION AND RATINGS" bar that can be found at either the top or bottom. Simple!

You can also rate games and add them to your collection from the individual game pages that you access when you click on any game from the main game page. For instance, if you were on the Mario Party 6 page there is a box in the top right where you can add it to your collection or rate it and click the "PUSH" button to update.

Now, let me explain something about writing game reviews. Again, everyone (yes, even you -1ers!) can write reviews for the site. This is a pretty simple process. Like before, go up to the menu above and select GAMES -> Game Database (or just CLICK HERE. Select the game you want to review (you can use the search at the top to find games quickly) and click on it. Near the top right of the page for that individual game you will see "Add a review" with a little plus next to it. Click the plus, write your review, choose a score (or not, if you don't like scoring reviews) and submit. Easy as pie!

And don't worry about not being formal enough, or sticking to a specific review format, or whatever. As long as you can write a paragraph or two and put your thoughts into a semi-coherent form, everything is good. Also, reviews of older games are totally acceptable, for instance I recently posted a WarioWare: Twisted! review of mine that I wrote like 6 years ago or whatever.

Alright, that's all I have for now. Use the features guys!

I knew Super Mario Brothers 3 would take out Super Mario Galaxy 2.

CALLED IT!

Haha, you don't know me.. Stuff like this bothers me. Really. I'm not OCD but..
(Why do you think Metroid Prime 2 took me 5 1/2 years?)

But yeah, I DO own those games on the VC, but not on cartridge. I don't know. Blah.

Hey it bothers me too but its for the best in the end. DEAL WITH IT.

@Simbabbad Lovely ape? But DKCR isn't out yet...

@Zero

And what happens with Final Fantasy II (SNES) and Final Fantasy IV? Do those stay separate?
11/19/10, 04:18
@Mr_Mustache

Of course. Final Fantasy IV is a DS game.
11/19/10, 04:20
@Pandareus

..but isn't it exactly the same as Final Fantasy II for SNES? I don't know for sure; what differences are there?
11/19/10, 04:26
@Simbabbad

Yeah, obviously I lost track and didn't read the entire FAQ. I'm a bit ADHD like that. When I first joined I was more worried about posting/lurking, completing the NEQ, and filling out my profile.

Redone graphics and everything.

Even the GBA version has new stuff in it.

Come on, now, it's not that complicated: the games on the VC are ROM dumps. They are the exact same as the original versions, with a few exceptions. But essentially, you're playing the same code.

@Pandareus

Well, I don't know; half the problem is stuff like Simba said about six Ocarina of Times being up there. I don't think any of them are new, but they're on different discs for different systems. Aren't there games that are just newly available on other systems? I didn't know about Final Fantasy IV, I just assumed it was the same because, haha, they're the same game. I guess redone graphics changes things, and new features, too.

I guess the whole thing is pretty complicated. Stupid collections!

Like I said, it's only an issue because there is a distinction between the different versions in the first place. If there was only one version/sku, this wouldn't be an issue. The dilemma is figuring out what version should be the 'legitimate' version for the site.

@Simbabbad Do people read guidelines though?

I do. It's important so I can avoid messing up with stuff. It seems like some people go out of their way to avoid reading rules and FAQs and such though, which annoys me. Ever since I started posting on message boards, I've seen people incorrectly assume things or ask questions that they could easily find the answer to by simply clicking around the site rules.

The VC label would be for VC games originally on non-Nintendo systems, and Famicom or Super Famicom imports.

What about those of us who own the actual imports?
11/19/10, 07:38
I think we have decided that imports are treated the same as non-imports. So all non-Nintendo systems will be on VC, and everything else will be on their respective platforms.

Alright, sounds good. I'm glad this was worked out, because it had been sitting in the back of my head whether I should add Castlevania (NES) or F-Zero (N64) to the site's Virtual Console listing
11/19/10, 07:48
@Zero

If that's the case I see two "Ice Hockey" entries. One for VC and one for NES.
11/19/10, 16:07
Maybe he "saw" it before I did all the work last night.
11/19/10, 16:40
@Zero

Probably. I last saw the two entries when I was creating an entry for Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey.
11/19/10, 21:25
Are there two versions of Golden Axe on VC? WHY?!
11/19/10, 21:55
Oh, I meant to bring this up before, but kept forgetting. How much work would it be to allow us to download our own personal database as a CSV spreadsheet, or something? That would be pretty slick.
11/20/10, 01:16
Yeah, so you can instantly export your data as a Game Collection spreadsheet (or at least the part of one, since we only include Nintendo systems).

Any basic format should work. Like comma-separated values. (A1,B1,C1,D1;A2,B2,C2,D2;...)

If no one else cares, though, don't do it. I just think it seems like a cool concept.

@Simbabbad

That was my entry for the Sega VC version.
