Hey guys, I hope you're enjoying the newest Mario title: "Super Mario Galaxy Wahooooo" (according to Charles Martinet on the load-up screen at least).

So how many stars do you have? Which galaxies have you most enjoyed? Favorite power-up? Be sure to mark spoilers though!

@GameDadGrant

Let's see if I can explain a good strategy...

Right when the minigame starts, throw a fireball strait ahead to get rid of a few easy boxes. While standing in the same general area, get rid of the boxes closest to your left and right sides. Now for the rest of the big groups of boxes, throw one fireball directly in their centers to clear both rows out quickly. If you keep at that up, you should master it in no time.

Edit: I think you get the idea.

@Octorockin

Hmm, cool thanks. Sounds like I'll need a lot of practice! Your advice is much appreciated!

Man some of you guys are fast. I'm still at star 70!

I feel like the game just gets better and better. And it finally dawned on me that each galaxy really only has 2 or 3 stars, I kept thinking there were going to be a ton of filler stars but instead there are just a ton of galaxies. Sweet! It's just amazing to me how many unique gameplay ideas they packed into one game. I'm kind of playing it thinking like... every other developer should be ashamed of themselves.

And despite my whiny editorial, I'm not really too worried about getting all 120 too fast. The green stars sounds pretty damn sweet (unlike playing as Luigi in the first Galaxy, which I did a few stars of and was like why am I doing this, it's the same game with worse controls!)

Just beat Bowser with 97 stars! This game makes me feel like a kid again. I absolutely can't wait to get all the stars. Well done Nintendo!

Eh, not quite. (final boss spoilers) Bowser in SMG2's first phase was different in that there was more chaos--his fireball beams covered the planet and it got pretty tricky near the end. The second phase...well, yeah, you're still shooting meteors at him, but the mechanics are unique to the fight, "weaponry" aside. Shame it was so short and easy--he should've taken 3 times as many hits and had 3 times as many attacks. GREAT music though, I strongly suggest listening to it outside of the chaos of the battle.

I kinda hope they stop the "fight Bowser 3 times" thing they started with SM64. It kinda makes the game climax early on, since all battles after that are just a "hard mode" version of the first one. Or if you do fight him multiple times, have the mechanics completely different for the final tussle.

That's actually one thing I've been noticing about SMG2. Maybe it's the Wii or the sound outweighing the music in the game but when I listen to tracks on Youtube they sound a LOT better than they do in-game. It's almost night and day and one of the reasons I left feeling disappointed. Just yesterday I listened to a few of the tracks on Youtube and my god was I impressed! It does NOT sound nearly that good when you play the game.

Is the Wii showing it's age? Can it not handle the quality of the music? Has anyone else noticed this?

Welp, I'm at the last star of the game. Fucking El Oh El. I can make it to the end relatively easy now, even teaching myself a couple shortcuts, but man... that last last last last area. Fuck, I was playing it like an hour straight and still couldn't do it. Will try again tomorrow when I'm less tired.

@carlosrox

It's not a spoiler. It's common knowledge that the game has more than 120 stars. I put in the spoilers so you wouldn't freak out on me.

@Het_Nkik

Shortcuts? I'm interested.

RAGE QUIT! Back later.

A tip for the last portion of the last star in the game: use Star Bits to temporarily stun those Bros. and force them to jump, giving you a second or two to move in closer.

You are very limited in star bits; I think you can actually only get them from that last section. But all I needed was 10 star bits to do it...and I beat it the third time I got to that final area.

Oh, patience works well too

@Griptor

I've been having trouble with the area before it though I can pass it. It's the electricity that for some reason I keep effing myself on. The electricity in that area you just mentioned with the star bits tip.

@DrFinkelstein

What I find tricky is that in the section right before the electricity one, if you use Mario's Spin move in the air incorrectly, you get punished. So whenever I got to the electricity area, I always forgot that I could use the Spin move again without the consequence of having the platforms flip on me. I think they did that on purpose! Psychological conditioning.

The Spin move does help in the electricity areas, but only when you're in real danger. Using it when you're not in danger could eff up your timing instead of help.

I'm at 200 stars right now. I now have gold crowns for Worlds 1-4 and the first four galaxies in World S.

I'm finally back into the swing of things, and can probably get everything by the end of the week. Again, thanks for the tip earlier, Het_Nkik.

At the electricity part you can skip the last two blocks with electricity on them at the beginning by grabbing the pull star while you're standing on the safe block.

@Secret_Tunnel

I was thinking of trying that after I died again this morning. That's the exact spot I'm having trouble on.

. In comparison, a game like Jak 2 was definitely harder, but really, fuck that game.
You did not just say that :( I love that game.

I really don't want to start arguing because this forum is so nice, but ... nice trolling.

Well I just got mine this weekend and I'm only on 30 stars.

That said the sheer variety of gameplay concepts they pulled off in this game is amazing. Nearly every single galaxy has entirely different mechanics, and they all work amazingly well. Really one of the most fun games I've played in a very long time. Well done, well done...
06/02/10, 22:51
I was just long jumping off to the left and the grabbing a pull star while in mid-air to avoid that electricity.

Also, at the start of the cloud section, if you do back flips and and create cloud platforms as high as you can go, there's a 1-up mushroom up there so as long as you make it that far every time (which should be easy with all the practice you get : p), you'll never run out of lives.

Found that while searching for the Comet Medal the first time playing the level.

@GelatinousEncore

I think Carlosrox perhaps listened to the music on his computer through headphones (you always get more of the details that way) but is listening to the game through mediocre TV speakers? That's the only way to explain it.
06/02/10, 23:22
I hate the game? I'm trolling? News to me.

Listen to the tracks on Youtube (at 480p if possible) and tell me the music sounds that good/clear coming out your speakers when you play the game.

No, I actually have an extremely good Bose setup for both. In my living room I have a 5.1 setup and for my PC I have a 2.1 setup. They're both Bose and they're both great but I'd like to think the 5.1 one will sound better considering it costs 2000 dollars more. There's no reason for me to think that the quality is better on Youtube unless it is, or that the game completely drowns out the music, but I never noticed this same problem with SMG1.
