Hey guys, I hope you're enjoying the newest Mario title: "Super Mario Galaxy Wahooooo" (according to Charles Martinet on the load-up screen at least).

So how many stars do you have? Which galaxies have you most enjoyed? Favorite power-up? Be sure to mark spoilers though!

Okay.

Tonight, I'm gonna attempt to get that star again. It's been a few days since. Gotta give it another go.

It's just a slow walk right off the corner. Try not to move after you "fall."

I DID IT

Used 40 mother fucking lives,I was just about ready to crack. Out of all that I only got the boomerang brothers four or five times, I was ill prepared to take them. I remembered what alaska said about a little help from player two. >=) Except I had no second player. Whatever. Let mario sit and attempted to beat the boomerang brothers with second player luma. Normally when you spin attack them, they don't move from their spot when knocked over, but if you let the luma freeze a boomerang that travels next to a spot where a boomerang brother is standing, you can smack them to the side. I could throw one of the brothers off the edge with this technique. As for the last two, I couldn't find another sweet spot, so I froze one of them, weighted the button down with a heavy object, then made my approach with just one non-incapicated boomerang brother remaining. Taking that on was trivial, and I was done. 242 stars \o/

@Secret_Tunnel

Already had. We'll see if logging into the game now changes anything. Someone said the comet wont appear traditionally. I didn't try that level since to see if it showed up...

There it is... attempting now... but if I have a hard time, I wont be much. I do have work tomorrow morning..

Got to the end section once. Pretty much a master at the first half.

Gonna rock this out in the morning.

I just finished it with 75 stars. Very disappointed in the last boss. Why the hell are you fighting the same bowser you fought twice already?
I'm happy that you got one more form of Bowser but even that was pretty lackluster. The only difference is that you're just floating through space. Even the music was the same (the one before the true final form I mean) if I'm not mistaken which is also not cool. And the final level's music leaves a lot to be desired. SMG1 did the same thing, I don't think this beautiful composed music matches very well with Bowser. I like the old school Bowser tracks like all the ones in SM64, his tracks in the Mario Karts, and NSMB Wii. I don't understand why for both Galaxy games they felt the need to include very un-bowser-y music.

The ending wasn't bad and seeing the Cosmic Observatory again brought a tear to my eye, especially with the music. It only reminded me how much I liked SMG1 better and it was like seeing an old friend. The part with the Luma at the end was very cute and touching, reminded me of the part with the Luma at the end of SMG1.

145 stars? Thanks for the spoiler.

I have been away from my Wii all week-end, but last night and tonight I basically played through world 3 and went from 30 to 51 stars. So addictive!

I've been mostly doing the comet challenges as they popped up. Some I disappointingly got on the first try (mostly the dark clone challenges), others that had me die half a dozen times. It's definitely more of a challenge than the first Galaxy was at this point.

The masochist in me almost wishes it were even harder already. Wants me to have to die a few dozen times and really work for each star. But then I take a step back and see how silly that wish is. I think it's more important for the game to be challenging for the right reasons, than to be challenging for the sake of being challenging. When I fail, I never blame the game, only myself. In comparison, a game like Jak 2 was definitely harder, but really, fuck that game. Bad design was the major reason why it was so hard, and that's fun for no one, except IGN's PS2 editors, I guess.

@Pandareus

You've got a good thought on that "challenging so that you can only blame yourself" thing. I blew through this game pretty quick, not having that hard of a time with anything. Even the FINAL star in the game, which I'm doing now, it's a challenge but it's not impossible and I can tell. It's not that the game was easy, nor is it that i'm some Mario God, but simply after the first one, I'm good at this kind of game, so I did well quickly with the sequel. Still highly enjoyable. Never will be as fresh as the first one though by definition. I can't unlearn my Mario Galaxy platforming skills you know?

@carlosrox

Bowser could have used a few new tricks for his last battle, I agree. I was thinking Mario could attempt vertically scaling a cylindrical planet while dodging obstacles and Bowser's attacks. The very last part of the fight was stupid easy, but it was pretty fun and very epic in presentation. I recall the boss music being good, but it's kinda hard to hear it during all of the chaos.

You should like the ending even more when you get 120 stars. Seeing the white Luma put on Mario's cap before story time is all sorts of cute.

@Renjaku

Come on guys, beat the final galaxy without P2 help!

Curious: to those who have completed the game, what was your total time and death count? You can view the time on your Wii message board, and the death count at the top right of your save file on the game's file load screen.

I finished in 29:07:00 with 230 deaths.

I'm busting my rump trying to catch up with some of you... I'm up to 72 Stars right now. I've just entered World 6... the stages are getting more challenging for me now.

Oh, question for those that have tons of Stars: There're "side mission" requests that involve a cleaning robot and a bunch of boxes in a room. I'm supposed to use Fire Mario to destroy all the boxes in said room within 20 seconds. Uh, freakin' impossible. How did you guys pull that off? Any tips you could give me?
06/02/10, 07:24
@GameDadGrant

I think I did that one. It's pretty simple once you realize your fireballs will go through several lined up boxes.
06/02/10, 07:28
@GameDadGrant

For the first one, I'm pretty sure I just stayed in the center and shot at different angles.

For the second, I had to go to the bottom of the level (where the guy and the green pipe is) and shoot forward and straight at the boxes from there. Try to shoot in between two columns of boxes so that one fireball destroys two columns at once.

Should be cake!

@RenjakuWait. I said that?

And Pandareus, I liked Jak 2.
06/02/10, 07:29
@carlosrox

As I recall though, wasn't the final Bowser fight in Galaxy 1 the same way -- mostly a repeat of the previous two? And the same is true of SM64 (and hell, even as far back as Super Mario Bros.). I was glad he at least had another form, as I was expecting a mostly identical fight.
06/02/10, 07:29
@Alaska_Gamer

Interesting.

What's a stronger word for "masochist"?
06/02/10, 07:31
Ok somebody else said that.

Let's just say my 60% expectation to beat all the dudes wasn't holding up, and the frustration it wasn't was extremely affecting my performance on all the sections before, which in turn reduced the 60% expectation to something like 30% as all attempts to be more 'careful' were actually killing me.

IE you were fucking lucky griptor. The pit of hell will consume you some other time/some other game.

@rebonack
The Final Bowser in G1 was more different than it was in G2. Bowser rolled around in a cart (or was it a rock, I forgot) while in G2 he did the EXACT same thing as he did before. All you have to do is hit him with those balls the entire fight, which is what you were doing since the first time you fought him.
