Franchises people are tired of, but franchises you defend [roundtable]

Okay, I just saw this on Kotaku, and started reading the comments... and man... some people just don't understand! D:

The comments about Mario and Zelda really piss me off because they're not over-saturated like Call of Duty and Guitar Hero.

The comments about Pokemon irk me a little bit, but I can understand most complaints about them. And I can kind of understand the hate towards Rock Band, because even the fans have been requesting some more substantial changes to the game formula, ever since I started posting in the Rock Band forums back in 2007 when it came out. (This E3 though, Harmonix may be revealing something big.)

I think we can ALL understand the hate towards Sonic, though my friend defends the character to death.

Hm... what about people that defend bad games? Like... the throw-away franchises from bigger developers... i.e. Crash and Spyro... people still actually defend those games. (Not the originals) WTF?!

Ahem... anyway...

So... what franchise are people tired of, but you're not? And are you willing to defend it or not?

I want a new Mario Party. I'll admit there were too many on Gamecube, but now they're overcompensating with only one each on the Wii and DS.

I'm tired of everything that gets talked into the ground. Mainly Conduit and other shooters, kinda sick of the new Final Fantasy games. I like the Rock Band series, but I hate the fact that Green Day is on its way. Ughhhh. I feel that this severely cut into Beatles downloadable content regardless of what anyone says. Thanks a LOT, Green Day!!

And I'm super sick of hearing about No More Heroes. *gag* (It even gets its own line of text..)

I love love love most RPGs on Nintendo systems. I hate when they receive any flak. Tales of Symphonia was awesome, and I don't get it when anyone has anything to rag on them. This game received a poor score at the hands of an IGN idiot, and the readers ran with it without ever playing the Gamecube game...OR this one. Stupid, stupid, stupid..

And I defend Puzzle Quest every change I get. (Demon Hatefield [I just made that up...thumbs up / down?] buried it on Wii, but got a bone over it for the other systems. Derrr..what? Something about lack of widescreen..something a gem-based puzzle-game DEMANDS....) Its a sweet game and its more than you expect it to be. If its LESS than you expect it to be...what the heck were you expecting??

There are probably lots of games that people in general (or at least people on message boards in general) don't seem to like that I defend, but I can't quite come up with one that people are fed up with. Tough question.

@Jargon

Yeah, I wouldn't mind one now, especially if it had online play and wii-speak functionality.

I thought Tales of Symphonia got a decent score for Gamecube. I love that game, even bought the art book for it and everything. Haven't played the new one yet, probably because I still haven't finished ToS.

Most Nintendo franchises that aren't Pokemon and Animal Crossing (both of which seriously need to evolve). Mario and Zelda are the two greatest series in the entirety of gaming. Anyone that complains about them being overdone deserves a boot to the butt. Heck, even the spinoffs for Mario are almost always fun, if not great.

@TriforceBun

But Pokemon do evolve :B

Pokemon to the nth degree. Everyone seems to hate on the franchise being "stale", and while I could definitely see some room for change, it's certainly not the greatest offe--

Daemon Hetfield reviewed that game, too. Shortly later it was revealed of his actual stance on gaming.
I don't know why you'd put someone in charge of something they loathe. I understand you needing both sides of an issue, but having someone be completely AGAINST something is not a good candidate for a reviewer.

Reading his review you could tell that he really hasn't even seemingly played an RPG in his life.

--Ack. I'm sorry, everyone. I didn't mean to bring this A.H. into this otherwise peaceful environment..

Marsh, if you like ToS for Gamecube, I heartily believe you'll like the 2nd one.

Does Daemon count as a franchise?

I criticize because I looove... R/B and G/S are amazing games that broke new ground and pushed the Game Boy to its limits. I want to see that level of effort, risk-taking, and innovation in the series again.

I'm tired of Soulcalibur - it's my opinion that the first one is the only game that is really, truly, awesome. The second one was fun too, but didn't quite live up to the first. It has been downhill ever since. 'Tis a shame. I'll still defend the original (Dreamcast) version to the death, though.

I'm not sure if people are sick of Street Fighter or not. But I love the series and will defend it forever.

Finally, I think people in general are just sick of Nintendo. But whatever - I still like their games. Once Nintendo stops making games I want, I'll probably join the group of "ex-Nintendo fans" - but they keep coming out with stuff that I want to play. I don't think that's going to change anytime soon.

I sort of am sick of Nintendo games, but not because they're bad or anything, because they're not. I think it's that I mainly played just Nintendo games for the most part while growing up, and it wasn't until a few years ago that I really made a commitment to exploring more non-Nintendo games; especially games on non-Nintendo systems. Nowadays, usually if there's a game I'm interested in on the Wii, it's by a third-party, rather than Nintendo themselves. I do find myself interested in some of the side games Nintendo makes/publishes that differ from their usual fare in some way, such as Disaster or Fatal Frame, but those are few and far between. Maybe if Nintendo had more action/adventure games that weren't Zelda, I'd be more interested in their first-party lineup.

As for oft-derided franchises that I defend, I can't think of too many. I guess I often find myself defending certain games in particular, like FFCC: The Crystal Bearers or Disaster: Day of Crisis or Deadly Premonition, whenever someone who's never played them (or who only put a small amount of time into them) puts them down. But generally, unless someone is being absolutely unfair with their accusations, I'm fine with what they have to say. Like with Metal Gear for instance, I enjoy the series, but I can totally understand people's complaints that the story is convoluted, or that there's more focus on cutscenes than gameplay for their liking.

Zelda. The hate for TP continues to annoy me. Even people here seem to hate it. In my opinion it's the best Zelda to date. I don't understand the hate for a second.
04/25/10, 10:08
@TriforceBun

I'd argue that each game has still had that effort put in, darnit! The story or the structure hasn't evolved though, which I agree should change up more.

@carlosrox

I don't hate it. Actually, I dunno, I think the Adventure genre is kinda going away for me, and I enjoy the Wind-Waker-ish realm more. Thus why I'm so excited to play Spirit Tracks than I was when trying to play TP.

To be fair though, like MP3 I didn't give it much time, either, so who knows. Midna is reason enough for me to be interested; really enjoyed that character.
04/25/10, 12:13
@carlosrox While I'm a little tired of Zelda as a whole, I agree that Twilight Princess was really good. I'm in the camp of people who greatly prefer it over Wind Waker.
04/25/10, 12:27
Well I also meant Zelda as a whole, but TP is the perfect example of people completely ragging on a perfectly good game for reasons I don't understand from it supposedly being "more of the same".
04/25/10, 12:42
After going back to Ocarina of Time, I can see why people might consider Twilight Princess a spiritual successor to that game, even though I do think it differentiates itself enough. I disagree with the sentiment that it has no "soul" though. I definitely cared about what was going on with the story and characters in that game, and some of the songs (like the new Hyrule Theme) were incredible.

@X-pert74

I'd say it's by and large the best soundtrack of any Zelda game. The quantity and quality of tracks is insane. It holds the most favorites of mine. Every dungeon's music was incredible. And those are just the dungeons. I agree too, I cared about those characters the most. I think Zelda TP did a ton right that I hope Zelda Wii manages to surprass.
