I don't know or care what I "need" done though. I haven't been paying attention to what kinds of weapons and armor and etc. there are and what is needed to build what. I just go online and jump into random quests.

In fact, I've been mostly ignoring upgrading in the main game as well. I mean, I'll go and do a quest or two and use what I get to make new stuff, but I don't go out of my way finding this or that thing-a-ma-jig and I especially don't grind monsters just to get specific items. I'm on the 3 star quests in the main game and have been told that I can't ignore this part of the game forever, but I hope the people telling me this are wrong. I have absolutely no interest in grinding or trying to pay attention to what thing-a-ma-jigs I'm collecting.

You're choosing to ignore the main aspects of a game why exactly? You won't get very far, lol.
07/31/10, 05:38
Because I bought the game not knowing how core that was to the experience, and got pretty far in enjoying myself not partaking in that, and figured I'll just keep going until it gets in the way of my enjoyment, and then probably give up and move on.

Frankly, that is probably my least favorite type of gameplay EVER. The whole run around collecting a bunch of random crap to construct something bigger that you may or may not get use out of for a couple of missions until you need to do it all over again and construct something bigger yada yada yada IS THIS REALLY FUN FOR PEOPLE!? It just doesn't work with the way my mind works. I can't keep track of what is important and what I want and/or need and I don't want to keep track of it.

In most RPGs its kind of optional so I can get away with ignoring it. We'll see how far I can get here.

/EDIT Hmm I was about to congratulate us on having our first 1,000+ post thread, but apparently the community thread did it first.

Still, this is the second 1,000+ post thread and the first about a specific game!!!

I must say... There are still a lot of people like me who don't give a fuck what hr you are and just want to have fun. You just have to find them.

That's the kind of people I'm looking for.

You will often see me in hr31 or less just to be silly and crack up. Yesterday I found a silly group in the open server (avoid the other ones unless you need to farm) and it was magic!
Just like the first days of the game. When people had no fucking clue what to do , what to upgrade or how. We just had fun
07/31/10, 06:44
So if someone is in a quest, and you try to warp to them... what happens?

Apparently it breaks the game for me.

Also...

When I go into quests with people they all immediately drink stuff. And I don't. What's up with that?

Also...

I forget, how do you tell when a creature is able to be trapped?!

If your hr is way behind you cannot warp to
People. For example, if you're hr 7 or 20 and you try to warp to me it will state "rank mismatch" and will not allow you to warp to me.

You realize if a mobster is ready to be captured by either 1) visibly seeing them
Limp or b) by having the capture guru skill

It depends where you ate.

First of all you must eat before you head to a quest to fain stamina and health, and decide your active feline skills (I like explored, moxie, or high defense)

Then you drink a cold drink if you are in a vulcano area or a cold drink if you are in the hot detest.

Also, some people don't eat and need to eat rations during the quest or perhaps they eat seeds (might seeds or adamant seeds) to add attack & resistance
07/31/10, 09:04
Fabz, what HR are you? I miss questing with you!
07/31/10, 09:57
I did like 3 or 4 quests earlier today.

Still HR 5, lol.

Did the people at HR 100 literally do hundreds of quests!?

But I take my sweet ass time and don't like to do the urgents right away. I put in over 270 hours online so I should be at 100 or so

It's not random crap, it's the reason why you slay beasts, to have armour and weapons to fight bigger beasts. It's really specific.
Correct. It is specific. For example, you farm urugaan cause his armor is better to fight alatreon- You farm a specific weapon because it's attack status (water, fire, drsgon, sleep, or thunder) is better to fight another specific monster so it's not about collecting but having the right gear at the right time, like Simba stated

Marsh tell me when you're online. If I know what city you are in I can come tonyou.

I play late nights aand during the early afternoons

Simba you're right. To be efficient it's ok to pick your own tm. But that's been ruining the fun core value of the game and it

@ everyone about "spoilers" Sorry. I'm just a putz who likes to discover a game for myself. I like to go in fresh. I think its wrong when a few apples spoil the bunch by saying whatever they want to, but since I'm in the minority with it, I guess thats my problem. So again, sorry. Just don't say/think that "nobody cares" about things getting spoiled, because I sure as hell do.

Spoiler, explaining my stuff to only simbabbad / Fabz. No one else read it:
I thought that Lagiacruz was the end boss in this game for the longest time, only to have that ruined for me before I even knew about it. That kinda thing stinks, knowing that what you're going after isn't even the big bad guy before it ends. I JUST found out about the Altareon or whatever it is this week. The game has been out since April/May and I just found out about it..on here..by accident. I know you guys think that its not a big deal (I don't go to MonsterHunterWiki as you do), but it really is.

Fabz, I have NOT caught all of the Fish yet in Animal Crossing, and not knowing what else is out there for me to get is part of the thrill for me. Where do I fish? When? Big? Small? I can kind of figure it out based on the ones its around, but thats still me doing it; not being explicitly told "oh, you're missing the Sea Bass. Its a big fish, you can catch it anytime in the ocean." --Never in my wildest dreams would I divulge something like that; I've ruined games for people by accident before, and it just feels so terrible when I do it. I know you shouldn't have to tiptoe around here either, especially in a thread named for such. I'd hate to say to you though "oh, I'm having trouble with _________ about 25 hours in on Fragile" and you're like "what the F? I'm only 20 hours in!!" It kinda feels like that -- to me -- when you talk about things. Sorry. I'm not saying "don't come here anymore," and I wouldn't want you to stop coming here (meaning the thread); you're one of the few people actually talking about Monster Hunter. You'll probably champion the re-birth of Monster Hunter in this portion of the year, actually.

simbabbad, you seem extremely offended by the "cut from the same cloth" comment for some reason. You guys don't seem to give two poops about spoilers (or define them differently than I do), and thats why I said it. Even though I'm technically a higher level HR than you are, I still feel leagues behind you somehow. In my brain, I see you and Fabz out there slaughtering all kinds of huge beasts, ones I've never heard of. I was more or less making a suggetion to the both of you; Fabz has trouble finding reliable, friendly people, and you seem to have lost your way / interest in the game. Perhaps the each of you could rejuvenate the other? Just a friendly thought [for an awesome superteam], take it as no more than that. Sorry.

@ everyone else, again
I can probably play late tonight. I think I'm going to see Dinner for Schmucks though after work.. Could be home late?
Maybe I can play around 1a EST? I'll check back one way or another. Good luck whatever you do!

EDIT- Checked in, 1:13a. Nothin'. Have a good weekend, guys!

Oops, I deleted Zero's post by accident when scrolling down the page. (Banned?)

Anyway, he can probably restore it, but here it is:

No I know it isn't random drops, but I mean random crap as in there is no reason to ever care about any of it other than it is thig-a-ma-jigs to create whatch-a-ma-calits. Or let me even reword that. There is no desire, on MY end, to care about any of it. I don't get excited about collecting various things to create things with it. It's one of my most disliked gameplay mechanics ever and I pretty much ignore it in every game it is in, unless it is implemented on a very basic level. You'll never see me searching out 5 hidden sprites in an RPG to collect the pieces to make the uber armor. I'd rather just walk into a shop and buy new stuff. And I hate doing that even. I don't even buy new equipment in RPGs now until I start finding it difficult to progress with the stuff I have. There is nothing more annoying than spending time and energy to get new equipment only to have it be totally outdated an hour later in the game (or even less, in some games...)

The only time I can remember actually enjoying collecting was in Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime. And that was because you were collecting items to combine and build various kinds of ammo for your tank and you had like 30? ammo slots, so even when you did create some uber piece of ammo it only took up one slot and didn't make everything you did before it now useless. And since you could keep combining ammo into newer ammo and such, it wasn't really even until the end of the game that you had a full 30+ pieces of unique ammo such that you were finally NOT using some of the ammo you had. Even so, I never went far out of my way to find new ammo. The game was set up like a Zelda-lite, the furthest you were going to find anything was a screen or two off the main path.

I'm not criticizing the design choices of the game, just saying it's not my thing. I've still managed to have a ton of fun with the game just kind of pushing through making armor and weapons out of the stuff I find while out doing the main quests, but if it gets to the point where I HAVE to start farming, I'm probably done.
08/01/10, 19:28
And I wouldn't say that all of the stuff in Tri gets 'outdated'. Certain loadouts are better for certain monsters/goals. That's why you can save a bunch of loadouts and switch between them quickly (before a mission). I don't know if you will, but I enjoyed messing around with the Skills system. It's kind of like customizing your super-powers.

Also, you can always regress for a bigger challenge (or when playing with lower rank peeps). And Items like the Great Jaggi Mask will enhance your drops at the cost of some serious defense.
08/01/10, 19:33
How did you accidentally delete my post? AND have a copy of it?

QUESTIONABLE.

Well, different stuff is better for different monsters and such but that just makes it all more of a hassle for me. Honestly, my mind is sort of too scattered to be able to keep track of that kind of gameplay. I have to check the quest thing like 5 times per quest just to remember what my current quest is. I start to get really lost trying to remember which knick-knack or thing-a-ma-bob I'm also trying to collect.

As I've said before, nothing wrong with the gameplay. It just doesn't work with the way my mind works. It becomes this huge clusterfuck and I'd probably need a pen and paper to try to organize it nicely in a way I can synthesize.
08/01/10, 19:53
You could put the item you want in the Memo Pad if that helps.
08/01/10, 20:02
I'm innocent! Well, not innocent, but not malicious...

I was scrolling with the mouse wheel and accidentally clicked it as I scrolled across the Delete button. In my setup, clicking the mouse wheel opens the page in a new Tab. So a new page opened with the message removed. I didn't see any pop-up.

@Zero
Tri isn't really a game that you can just pick up and play casually. You kind of have to immerse yourself in it, and when you do (it isn't really THAT complicated), it should feel pretty manageable. You can get pretty far without upgrading at all. And I agree with Simba that Tri 'collectibles' are much more rewarding than those of other games, because they DO stuff and because they are the reward for a tense, exciting battle, rather than a protracted war of mouse-clickery.

Plus, the hunting theme of the game is so well-integrated into the gameplay. And remember, you don't HAVE to collect anything. If you're just that good, you should be able to triumph on skills alone. (For a while, at least.)
08/01/10, 20:36
@Simbabbad But it's the grinding I dislike. I don't mind collecting stuff in a forward, progressive manner, but to go back into areas I already played to find monsters I already fought just to get 2 more jig-a-ma-whats to complete armor... not interested.

I don't like fetch quests in most games, really. But they're usually at least some annoying side thing in a game, and not the core gameplay itself.

@anandxxx Well, that is my plan, to go forward as far as possible on skills + whatever I can craft from the stuff I pick up in the course of my regular missions + farming (I mean uh, on the farm)/fishing/etc. But I've been told by various people it gets nigh impossible to progress like that after awhile and you pretty much have to start going out specifically just to find items you need to craft stuff.
08/02/10, 02:30
What's wrong with fighting older monsters to get a few items to craft a better weapon so you will have a better chance at killing something bigger? It's not like those older monsters are a walk in the park. But that is what Monster Hunter is, hunting. It's not an RPG. It's a hunting game where you build your own equipment. Everything is made from what you kill. Brilliant game design. Nothing is over-powered and nothing is universal. It's like using a specific weapon to defeat a specific boss in Mega-Man.

To Mr Mustache, Monster Hunter is not a game that can be spoiled. The front of the game case has a monster in it, did that spoil you too? Come on.

Whether you play it solo or with a group, networking is part of the experience. The game purposely leaves specific details to be found by some players and then shared by word-of-mouth. You will also never know what a monster is trully like until you fight it for yourself. The game doesn't have a real story nor a real ending, it's not set up like any other game. Solo only quests do eventually end for sure but then you have the guild quests, which can be tackled solo if you wish, and all the equipment you'd like to strive for. Putting spoiler warnings on a game like Monster Hunter is defeating some of the fun. The tales. The sharing of tactics. The advice. This is a game about camaraderie. All hunters fight these creatures and if they want to share their stores they are encuraged to do so because it will not only get the next hunter excited it will help get better prepared. No one is alone.

@Simbabbad

..I don't get the reference. If you're making fun of me, or again showing how much smarter you are than me, congratulations (you know, since I know nothing about history, according to you). Thanks.

@CRISIS hearts

Haha, what are you talking about? ANY game can be spoiled. I love how we have to be all hush-hush about crap like Mario, Metroid or Zelda (people were PASSING STONES about the threat of Mario Galaxy 2 content being spoiled), but when I have a problem about something in Monster Hunter, I'm being irrational. Lovely.

@ anyone actually looking to play

I'll check back in a half hour or so. Let me know if you're going out and I'll happily join you.
