Apparently this has been on mobile since 2019, but as of this week it's a Switch game. And not one that should be overlooked!
It does feel like a mobile game, but I mean that in a good way: it's faithful to the roguelike structure but streamlined to perfection for relatively quick runs (15-30 minutes or so, generally on the lower end of that once you get into the rhythm of it). You spend almost all of your time in battle, thinking about the most efficient and/or most assured route to victory in the Pokemon-meets-Yahtzee battle system, which is built around smartly themed characters and enemies.
There's enough character customization and progression choices to keep things interesting when attempting the same run multiple times. And luck is definitely a factor as well. (I mean, it's a game themed around dice, go figure). Plus the absurdly catchy Chiptune / Disco / Game Show soundtrack and charming characters make sure each run is full of delight. And I bet I'll be playing a while: there are six wildly different playable characters, each with like a half-dozen Episodes that shake up the gameplay, and my win rate is maybe 25% so far.
Anyone else pick this up? I feel like I'm just scratching the surface, but I definitely recommend it already.
A brute force build I had going that was thwarted in the final battle by truly awful luck...
I'm going to be honest, I thought this game came out a long time ago on Switch?! Totally forgot about it! I love Super Hexagon and VVVVVV but something about this looked like it wasn't quite my type of game. BUT... it has that Chipzel soundtrack, so that makes me at least want to check it out sometime, perhaps.
40+ hours in and the credits have rolled! Really clever all the way through, too. My favorite character is the last one you unlock. And then the final episode is really special, worth finishing all episodes for every character to play. I'll probably keep playing this now and then too, since runs are nice and short, and there are some challenges left to go for.
Pretty tight race between this and Hades for my 2020 GOTY, and while I can probably see myself coming back to Hades (is 100 hours really enough?), I'm confident there's more Dicey Dungeons in my future.
So just to clarify... what is the structure exactly? It seems like a single playthrough wouldn't take too long, but then there are a bunch of different characters to try? But there are also different episodes? What does that mean? Is each episode a contained thing? Like if you beat a certain episode with a certain character, you don't have to keep beating it again to play the other episodes?
I don't know why the Terry Cavanaugh + Chipzel combo didn't instantly draw me in but something about the gameplay just kind of made me not as interested as I would otherwise have been.
Well, 5 bucks and one of my favorite devs and one of my favorite musicians, figured I'd try it out.
It's pretty cool! I like the various mechanics and how you have time to think it through and don't have to react all the time like in some roguelike games. Roguelikes are also tough for me because of all of the repetition, but getting to break it up into distinct chunks is pretty cool. Feels highly unlikely that I will actually finish all 37 chunks, but who knows?!
I had already beaten the first warriors one, so I played the first thief one and failed, then I played the first robot and succeeded even though it is supposedly harder! Really does come down to luck sometimes I think, got an awesome gold weapon for the robot I used a ton. I'm loving how different they all feel.
@Zero Yeah the Warrior / Thief / Robot are definitely the least complicated, and so easiest to pick up for the opening episodes. I had my first defeats on the Witch because I didn't really understand how she worked. Took me a few attempts just to figure her out and finally get a win.
Generally speaking, the game isn't nearly as difficult as most roguelikes aspire to be, especially in the early episodes when you're just learning the ropes. But the later episodes will definitely force you to stop and think for a minute about how to proceed in and out of battle.
Beat the first episode of the thief. Barely pulled through. I guess I don't totally understand the style there.
The inventor is pretty interesting, always having to switch things up. Tough to say how hard it will be, I did royally screw myself by accidentally getting rid of the only attack I had that could be used multiple times a turn, lost the very next fight.
The witch is interesting too. He really put some work into making each character feel unique.
I also beat the second chapter of the warrior on my second run. Once again though it felt a bit like just getting the right items. I ended up stacked with great shield stuff, most every turn I'd be able to pull off an attack or 2 AND add a ton of shield. At one point I had like 25 shield against some enemy, lol.
I've been playing this a lot! Well, a fair amount anyway. Have finished 12 episodes, so I guess I'm about 1/3 through?
The only one I haven't beaten a single episode with yet is the "secret" character. Trying to figure out the ideal strategy. It feels like keeping a small deck would be ideal, but then again a lot of the new stuff is better than what you start with. I know you can get rid of stuff too, but not as fast as you obtain it. Hmm...
