How weird is this game? We were talking in that Mario remaster thread about what the ideal remake looks like, and this hits the Weirdness Target perfectly for me: the physics are wrong and the game is cropped, so it doesn't replace the original by any means. But it has all these extra modes and challenges and gizmos that the game doesn't do a very good job of explaining to you... which I love! I remember busting out my dad's old Gameboy Camera as a kid and having a blast just delving into the menus figuring out what it even is. This reminds me of that! Some of the old Game & Watch Galleries do it too!

Yeah, I know, when the game first came out it had a manual that would've explained all of this. But still, a lot of these old Gameboy games really hit a historical sweet spot where they're stuffed with way more bonus features than their NES ancestors, but they're still not nearly as handholdy as their modern descendants. They're these strange artifacts of Nintendo trying for the first time ever to unify its brand and maybe make some dough off of nostalgia, and now it's been longer since they came out than it was between their release and the thing that they were trying to play off of!

Yoshi is in it!

It’s a really great compilation and few games were as stuffed to the gills with content as this. I don’t know if it’s my favorite version of the game...but I always choose this version over the NES version when I play it on 3DS.

@kriswright

LOL!

This was a really neat enhanced port! Definitely worth the money on 3DS, even though the cramped screen space would've killed a lesser game. The speed run stuff and inclusion of the entirety of Lost Levels were great decisions.

What's wrong with the physics?

I've always wanted to try the multiplayer. Nintendo should do splitscreen multi for GB and GBA games. Maybe even DS? It seems kind of feasible, power-wise. Or at least emulation with wireless or online play.

@Anand

I want to say I was able to try out the multiplayer a grand total of ONE time back in the day. It was pretty fun! I would love it if Nintendo brought this game back on Switch (Nintendo Switch Online: Game Boy Color!) and added online play for it. I think it'd be great.

Another GBC game that had great multiplayer but few people have been able to actually play? Metal Gear Solid. THAT game should be brought back, ASAP.

Oh, I'm sure there are tons of multiplayer GB/GBC/GBA/DS games which never got their due.

That's why a multiplayer-enabled VC service for those games would be so awesome. Playing online on the Switch Online apps works surprisingly well.

I DID play a decent amount of New Super Mario Bros DS multiplayer. Both the 1v1 mode and the awesome minigame mode.

I enjoyed the extras in this game, it was fun to discover new secrets in a familiar setting.

@Anand I'll bet the multiplayer levels have been remade for Super Mario Maker 2. And if not, you could make them yourself!

@TriforceBun I don't think it's the entirety of Lost Levels. If I remember rightly, it's missing the five bonus worlds. Still a nice inclusion though.

Five bonus worlds?! What is this you speak of! Spill your secrets!

Hmm, it's hard to explain.

It's funny, you'd think that Mario's jump would just be "If A is pressed, set vertical speed to 10. If vertical speed is greater than 10, subtract .1 from vertical speed" each frame. But it turns out (the book Game Feel goes waay in-depth on this) that Mario's jump acceleration varies depending on how far he is off the ground, how long A is held, what his momentum is, if you change momentum in mid-air... and we all know this, of course. But actually seeing all the different variables written out gives you a ton of appreciation for why it took 3 months just to nail the controls in Mario 64!

I think they're different in Deluxe. I'm not crazy here, right? Can anyone back me up on this? I think the walk speed is faster and the jump with no momentum is higher.

World 9 and Worlds A, B, C, and D! In the original version, you can only get to World 9 if you beat the game without using warp zones, and you can only get Worlds A-D if you beat the game eight times. Those requirements are changed up in re-releases of the game, but none of the worlds are included in Deluxe!

The only thing that holds this game back from being better than the original for me is the screen crunch. This was just a game designed with a certain resolution in mind. I know they made adjustments to the game to account for this, but it just doesn't feel right at all to me. This didn't stop me from 100%ing the game in high school, but it wouldn't be an experience I'd be looking to go back to at this point.

Is it possible, with the Switches, and stuff? Maybe... I'm ashamed of how little Mario Maker 2 I've played. Haven't even tried the multi.

I blame Animal Crossing and Tetris 99!

@Secret_Tunnel
Maybe they changed the physics to account for the smaller screen?

@Anand Yup! SMM2 has on/off switches and corresponding blocks which work the same way as the ones in the vs mode here. I think the graphics for those assets in the SMB style may have even come from this game.

@PogueSquadron

There is some “screen crunch” for sure. No denying that. But I feel this is one game that could get away with it, since so many people know that it like the back of their hand. The smaller viewable play field was hardly a hinderance. At least in my experience.
