We are less than a month away people! Between the recent Nintendo Direct and all sorts of merchandise leaks we've seen and learned about so much.

I am really excited to dive back into the world of Animal Crossing. I haven't played any in years and yet the franchise was (and is) so special to my wife and I. Our Wedding Reception was themed after it even.

There is so much I could say but my available time to write this after making the thread got severely truncated. So I will just note that this game looks more beautiful than I could ever expect from the series. The shadows cast by the sunlight are ridiculously real and atmospheric. Look at the way light shines through the metal chair in this image. What games put that kind of detail in themselves? I don't recall many to be honest.

This game screams of nuance and love. I am stoked to live a virtual life there for a while.

Here's a couple really great videos about the recent news, dissecting more nuance from the direct itself.

You can check out the Animal Crossing New Horizons website at this link.

Who are you hoping to see join your town? Are you going to try and court certain villagers with amiibo? Are you just going to let fate lie and see what happens with the random nature of the game?

I asked for the day off work. I'm going to blast some demon scum, and then I'm going to water some flowers and catch some bugs. Then I'm going to blast some more demons.

There will be pizza and beer too.

It should be a good day.

Right on. I don't think I'll end up using a vacation day for it since likely the game won't even arrive till midday in the mail. I'll probably spend all Saturday and Sunday enjoying it though. I haven't dabbled in the DOOM games but I hear they're great.

Are you planning ahead Hinph? So many people are doing that in a facebook group I'm a part of but hell, I think a lot of the fun is just making something from what's presented. So while maybe I'll plot out some ideas once I'm in, I'm not planning some perfect town now. I like playing this organically.

@DrFinkelstein

Nah, I'm with you on just playing and letting everything unfold how it does.

I'm not sure when my copy of Doom Eternal will arrive from Amazon (I pre-ordered it all the way back when Amazon used to give $12 off for game preorders, so that's rad!), but I'm just going to download Animal Crossing so I can play that in the meantime. I liked having it right on the system with New Leaf.

I am looking forward to the game for sure. But I'm kinda on media black-out for now. I want to go into it fairly blind and be surprised by what the game has to offer.

Same. Now that it's been confirmed that there will be some kind of system transfer option i'm all in.

This will be my first AC and I'm really looking forward to it. Not just because it's THE big Switch game for the first half of 2020, but I think it's going to fit perfectly into my "play the Switch for an hour or two every day" routine. Also will be doing the Doom thing at the same time as well!

I hope you find it engaging and stick with it. I have easily found myself playing this game for a full year or more each time. It's the perfect slow burn. In 2013 I put 450 hours into Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

What about this game intrigues you the most?
What are you hoping for as far as features?
Do you have any plans already for how you want to decorate/design your town?

I'm excited to hear more about your adventure in calm-living.

You know, as strange as it might be to say, I wonder if COVID-19 will end up helping this game. If people are going to be staying home from work and school, they'll need something to do, and a relaxing island getaway with cute animal friends sounds appealing even to me right now... this could be a great kinda therapy game that helps people unwind and escape a little bit.

@DrFinkelstein

Going in totally blind! Much like I did with Pikmin 3, I'm jumping in fresh to a Nintendo series I'd previously ignored and keeping an open mind about it. But in general, the way I play games on the Switch is very much an "hour here, hour there" type deal and not as much long-form gaming. So something like Animal Crossing is a better fit for me now than it would have been in the past.

Reviews are out!

It's actually reviewing like... super well? At the moment (after 44 reviews) it is the highest scoring AC game ever at 91%! It felt like (to me anyway) impressions coming into it were "more of the same" but it must be doing something right, eh? I got work to do right now so I can't actually read reviews but I'm now curious why it's scoring higher than all the previous AC games.

To be honest I was probably going to sit on this game for a bit but being in the middle of social distancing with too much time on my hands (not RIGHT now, but in general over the last few days and for the foreseeable future) I'll probably just jump right in.

@Secret_Tunnel A bit anecdotal, but a LARGE portion of my Twitter followers are all making posts that essentially boil down to WHY IS ANIMAL CROSSING NOT OUT YET I NEED IT SO BAD DURING SOCIAL DISTANCING so I think you might be onto something here.

To be honest I've been pretty f-ing stressed lately (not just the virus stuff, but I was sick for like a week, and that always messes with my anxiety) and well, before I was kind of like not totally sure I needed another Animal Crossing, but now after the great scores it is getting and in the midst of me having a bit more time on my hands but not being able to go out and do much, and just wanting something relaxing to do well... I think I'm day one. I kind of can't really think of many better games to release in the midst of a global pandemic.

Really wish Nintendo would have bit on that petition to release it early. Would have been some good PR.

I'm down to one shift a week until they inevitably close my casino down and lay me off.

I mean, I hate to agree with you. But think of all those extroverts stuck at home who can't visit their neighbors... hey, here's a game specifically for them! Go visit your animal neighbors instead!

Just stay away from the bat neighbours.

@Shadowlink

Or just dont eat them, shiiit. You invite them over for BBQ. You don't BBQ them. I've read that bats are the source of human bed bugs though, so I don't consort with their kind.

My wife is working from home and watching the boys during this crazy time. A/C is already pre loaded. We have an agreement that she gets to play first she's not much of a gamer besides A/C and Wario Smooth Moves but she had to wait until I get home from work just after 6pm. Then the boys will take their turns before I finally get to play after we send them to bed. Can't wait. Just the distraction I need from the real world.

I was originally taking a vacation day Friday for travel (I had big dreams of bar crawling in my hometown and watching NCAA Tournament games all day -- so much for that!). But I'm still taking the day off out of spite, and Animal Crossing and Doom Eternal are both pre-ordered and pre-loaded. Weekend can't get here soon enough now. I'm ready!
03/19/20, 00:34
It's gonna be kind of weird booting the game up on Thursday night and having it be dark when you get to the island though, right? I might wait until Friday morning.
03/19/20, 00:38
Hell to the yes. I've been saving my last voucher for this! And I ordered my nephew a copy for his birthday, too. I can't wait until he never plays it!

Look how young and innocent I was. Hinph, you naive cutie. Day off? Try job off. Pizza and beer?! I'm not stepping foot in one of those panicky human Covid-19 factories to get beer, nor do I trust food that I haven't prepared myself... and I failed to get the ingredients necessary for making pizza in my last PrimeNow order. Rats.

A good day? Yes, I am still hoping for that to be the case. One doesn't need pizza, beer, or a job to cross demons or rip and tear animals.
