It's like Zelda! But... not really?!

I got interested in this way back in 2016 when it came out on other platforms, and kept waiting for it to come to Nintendo. And then it finally did!

And then I ignored it for a half a year! But I'm finally playing it!

Anyone else play this?

It's pretty cool. It's a top-view game that gets compared to Zelda because of being top-view but I wouldn't say it is much like Zelda. It's a lot more action focused, though it IS non-linear and a big part of it is exploring and finding all of the pieces you need to progress. It's almost more like Metroid in this sense, a lot of exploring your environment and finding hidden little niches and such.

Tons of secret paths. Mostly which lead to chips which you can use to upgrade your moves and weapons and such.

Graphics are pretty cool too. Colorful yet "gritty".

Yeah I kickstarted it and played it when it launched on PC. I think they tweaked/reduced the standard difficulty like a month after in launched which, I dunno, I thought it had a nice difficulty curve to it. I'm sure it's still a toughie.

Anyway, I liked it for its style and the nifty combat, but I thought some of the exploration was sorta wonky. A lot of times it seemed like alternate paths were hidden behind geometry that was really difficult to discern, in a way that resulted in me just hugging every wall to see if something was hidden. I think I had to look up one or two key items I missed near the end of the game, but I can't remember exactly.

@Zero
Your stupidity paid off!
Thanks for reminding me I've wanted this game for a looooong time!

I need to buy this!

It seems about right to me. I die a fair amount but haven't really gotten STUCK yet, though a few bosses were sort of like HOW IN THE before I figured out their patterns and such, and even then I died a LOT on some of the bosses.

Definitely true, and the map *sort of* helps point you in the right direction with those triangle pieces but I have definitely had a few running around confused just to find some tiny obtuse path somewhere I had run right past several times already moments.

I'm not totally sure if you need to collect EVERYTHING though, a lot of it just seems like optional upgrade stuff.

Finished. Felt about right lengthwise. I feel like the end boss was a bit easier than some of the other bosses but that's fine.

Fun game, though it's tough for me to put a finger on what it even is. Action game with some exploration but also a bit obtuse at times?

Feels kind of random but apparently a Hyper Light Drifter TV show is in the works, from the guy behind Castlevania, etc.

That is unexpected. I'm skeptical that HLD can be turned into a show while retaining the parts of its narrative that work in the game. Especially by the guy who made Flixlevania. Devil May Cry seems like it could be up his alley, but this? I hope he's only kinda sorta attached, and not integral to the making of an HLD series.
