I am unsure if Sakurai can go a presentation without showing something amazing off. I have also just loved the very relaxed feeling of the Smash presentations and how off the cuff they seem.

Terry presentation on Wednesday at 8 in the morning, eastern time.
For 45 minutes! The Hero and Banjo presentations were only about 20-25 minutes, for comparison.

Oooh...so this will be like, 8:00am for me. Nice. I doubt I'll be able to watch it live tomorrow (that's about the time I drop my kids off at school) but I'll be able to check it out either half-way through or just catch it later on a recording (YouTube?). Either way, looking forward to seeing what Terry Bogard will play like!

@GameDadGrant

It's at 7am for me! That's the middle of the night!

5am lol. Nah, not happening.

Guess I'll be waking up to whatever news comes of this, if any. It'll suck if I miss something cool.

Presentation spoilers below this post! All I'll say here is, don't get your hopes up for new features or reveals.

...so yeah, no new reveals or (major) features. Sakurai talked about SNK/NEO-GEO for a bit, took his time showing off Terry's moves, then played through Arcade mode to fill up a lot of the time.

Terry looks fun! Maybe a bit too reminiscent of Ryu/Ken to be especially exciting, but he's got the signature Sakurai Attention To Detail, as well as his low-health Super Special attacks.

Terry's stage has a nice twist! It's a flat arena without edges kind of like Bridge of Eldin, but the sides are walls: you can only get KO'd off the side if you're hit very hard into the wall. There's also like a million possible cameo characters from SNK games in the background. (Mai Shiranui conspicuously absent! Smash is a series for good little boys and girls, after all.)

And holy crap, 50 new music tracks! With what looked like a couple dozen original remixes.

The only new features are that you can change the rules on the fly in Battle Arenas, and also communicate with other players in the arena lobby with pre-set phrases.

And of course, this is all available today, probably around the time of maintenance this evening. EDIT: Actually, it seems it's all available now. I'm downloading the update already! EDIT 2: Or, I would be if the servers weren't getting crushed... EDIT 3: working now!

Terry looks to be as faithful an adaptation as one could hope, and the stage has a nifty gimmick and a lot of music. I could've done with a presentation half that length though.

EDIT: Terry and the update are ready now!

Love the amount of tracks. And the whole Cage Match thing!
11/06/19, 22:46
That was fun to watch! I've never gotten into SNK at all and I don't think I've ever played a single Neo Geo, so the history lesson was actually really interesting. I really like this fanservice for people who love more niche stuff, it's fun to see them get excited. 50 music tracks is ridiculous and awesome too haha.

Like I said, I get the most fun out of this from making predictions about who's next, so here's my guess:

Fighter Pack #5 will be revealed as Master Chief during the Game Awards. There's no other series that would be simultaneously ridiculous enough to see in a Nintendo game to feel exciting, popular enough to make the "final" reveal feel huge, and fleshed-out enough for one of these big chunks of DLC with new music, a new stage, and a bunch of cameos.

Then, next year we'll start getting new fighters--no stages or music tracks, just the characters. We'll get Rayman, Crash Bandicoot and/or Spyro, Sora, and Leon Kennedy (along with a bunch of Mii costumes based on other characters in those series). Then, the final character added to the Smash series will be Waluigi, as a foil to Nintendo's main mascot and a joke about how people are never allowed to ask Sakurai for anything ever again.

What other unrepresented franchises are there at this point? I'm looking at my shelf of games right now, and almost all the classics are covered. Tekken? Doom? Half-Life and Portal? More Final Fantasy?

...Ape Escape?

Terry is fun and simple to play. Happy to have him. The stage is pretty lame though. There's nothing more iconic from the SNK fighting games that they could have went with? I'm asking sincerely. I don't know those games.

@Secret_Tunnel

Why do you predict no new stages or music packs? I'm expecting them to do the second fighter pass the same exact way. It'd be really sad to get Doom Slayer without a Doom stage and music!

I really do hope we get a little more Western representation before they wrap things up. I'd love to see Scorpion, Lara Croft, and Doom Slayer to really complete my love of the 90's. I guess my personal dream picks for the next 6 fighters would be the previous three mentioned characters plus Ryu Hayabusa, Crono, and Gordon Freeman. But then they really should get a Resident Evil character in there too, and I would like Crash and Rayman too. Master Chief would be neat as hell if Microsoft wants to keep being friendly, or the Battletoads. Then there's still Tekken since Namco is developing all of this after all. If there's another Nintendo character, I want pig beast Ganon. I prefer Ganon to Ganondoft and think it's pretty lame that he has been represented only by a clone fighter this entire time. Oh, and why not Mike Jones to go along with a Next Level Games revival of StarTropics while we're dreaming?

I hope they keep the fighters coming for the entire life of the Switch so that this really lives up to its name as the Ultimate Super Smash Bros. We're clearly never getting all of these characters together again, and I don't doubt Sakurai's ability to come up with some other surprising choices. It's officially the best selling fighting game of all time and I imagine the DLC won't have any trouble continuing to sell, so why not.

Terry's a lot of fun! Been having a blast doing Terry vs. Terry games online. He's not the fastest, and his recovery is very exploitable, but he hits very hard and has good combos.

As for who else I'd like to see in the game at this point, I'm still at this list...

Me personally, I'd probably be happiest with...

First party (seems less likely at this point)
5) Dark Matter --- Kirby
4) Karate Joe --- Rhythm Heaven
3) Min Min --- ARMS
2) Medusa --- Kid Icarus
1) Saki Amamiya (and Airan Jo echo/costume) --- Sin & Punishment

Third party
5) Ryu Hayabusa --- Ninja Gaiden / Dead or Alive
4) Phoenix Wright --- Ace Attorney
3) Tron Bonne --- Mega Man Legends / Misadventures of Tron Bonne
2) Kawase Umihara --- Umihara Kawase
1) Cadence --- Crypt of the Necrodancer (at least give us the Cadence of Hyrule music for the Zelda stages!)

Some rumors out there about the final Challenger Pack fighter. Certainly far from concrete evidence (like we had for Terry in the lead-up to his reveal), but a few small things have added up to at least some likelihood that Lloyd Irving from Tales of Symphonia could be the fighter for Challenger Pack 5.

It's definitely not a stretch, considering the series has already had some representation in Smash as Mii Fighter DLC in Smash 4. And it's a character I personally would have liked to see in Smash at some point. But I'm not crazy about the timing in particular, considering it'd be our third JRPG protagonist DLC fighter, third anime boy, our second sword DLC (third if you count Joker's weirdly long knife), and there's some chance he would have a similar sword/magic mix in his moveset like Hero. It wouldn't be as splashy as any of the previous DLC (with the exception of Terry maybe), but I do have a fondness for the game/series, so I'd be fine enough with this result.
11/27/19, 23:59
Who? Legit never even heard of that character and I know (of) that series.

I'd rather they stick with actual icons first.

How about Resident Evil, Ninja Gaiden, Double Dragon, Ghouls n Ghosts, or a classic FF character from 4 or 6?

EDIT: Ah okay I recognize him. Didn't know his name though. I only recognize him through message boards.

Hmm yeah can't get too excited about Lloyd.

In part because...

Wait for it...

Skies > Tales.

Better than Joker or Bayonetta whom I feel have no fucking place in Smash at all.

Banjo and Terry are much better picks.

Characters that have existed for a few weeks don't deserve to make it in Smash IMO. Fuck Bayo and Joker.

Nah Joker is awesome.
11/28/19, 00:46
Yeah, that character would be a legit disappointment. I hope not. As right as Zero is about Skies of Arcadia being the vastly superior game (very right), I even think Vyse would be a "WTF? Nah, not iconic enough" character as well.
11/28/19, 00:49
If they put Vyse in people will just be like WTF why did they put cartoon Snake in?!
11/28/19, 01:38
@Zero
Has no connection to Nintendo.

I'm not even particularly crazy about Snake or Cloud getting in but at least they have a history with Nintendo - a negative one - but that's kind of the point.

Joker means nothing. He's not really an icon either. He has no place in Smash. Goes Triple for Bayonetta.
