What time do you folks normally play? So far I've rarely seen anyone on when I check. I've only ever joined one room so far, and a second time I showed up right as everyone was leaving. Also, does anyone like 2v2 with items on normal stages? That's mainly what I like.
@Mop it up Do you see a lot of people in your friend list playing? I do but then I rarely meet friends online, THANKS FOR MAKING THIS SO HARD NINTENDO.
My Ridley is now in Elite Smash. Rarrrrrr!! Which is funny because while I love him, I don't feel that confident with him. I definitely won a few games that I probably didn't deserve to win. Oops...
@TriforceBun My Simon is hovering between 1.14 and 1.15 million and hasn't gotten into Elite yet :(
What's Ridley's GSP? I wanna get him in Elite as well. I also wanna get deeper with both Samuses cuz I know I can.
Why aren't you on Discord? After that game closed last night we made another but I told Ploot it wouldn't be easy to communicate that with you since you're not on with us.
Good games last night by the way. Wish we played longer.
Zero, Mop, and Ploot are serious Smash hustlers. And Ploot I include you in this cuz you said you weren't good at Ultimate.
I like how when we chose "random" it gave us exact duplicates numerous times. We even had 3 Greninjas one round! 2 Warios, 2 Toon Links, etc.
Currently my Ridley is at about 1.66 GSP, which I think is the threshold for getting into Elite because I stopped once I reached it. Or maybe it's not just determined by GSP?? It's a little unclear at this point. Either way, my Ness got kicked out of Elite today ( ;'( ) after a loss and he's currently at about 1.64 GSP.
That was fun last night! I should probably get on Discord more, especially after last night's room suddenly closed up. My computer is across the house from my Switch (dock) though, which is why I typically have online stuff and gaming stuff separate these days. Team Attack On led to some wacky shenanigans. I'll be on the lookout for you guys' arenas more in the future!
I totally meant that it was impossible to use a hammer for that challenge, among others. That’s not a spoiler though, there are a few challenges in regular smash mode that you can’t use the hammer on.
@TriforceBun Team Attack is the best! It makes that inevitable 2-on-1 situation a lot less hopeless, allows you to go save your teammate with an up-air if you can see they won't be able to recover, and keeps a lid on some cheesier strategies.
Only got a handful of Challenges left: fill out the skill tree, play 100/200 Quickplays, and some stuff on the Spirit Board. It's relieving that there aren't any "Finish ______ Mode With Every Character" challenges like in Wii U/3DS, but the local play challenges are weirdly specific and still unimaginative. Oh well, they were easy to squeeze into an evening.
Those were some fun team battles the past couple of nights! Too bad I always forget about the save replay button so I don't have any video of the craziness. I'm still not 100% sure what is a "smash hustler" but hey, I s'pose I'll take that as a compliment...?
@Zero Yup, that's what I often see. It's gotten as high as twenty people on my friend list playing it, and no arenas open. Switch really needs a messaging system for this kind of thing especially since people visit different places and aren't always there (forums, Discord, other places). Can't really get things together!
@nate38 I was thinking that the challenge board feels relatively easy this time around, but then I was also thinking I'm okay with that since much of 4's were such a slog. I'm curious though, what kinds of challenges would you want?

This reply gave me serious deja vu, so I did a search and found that we had this same dialogue for Smash Wii U, haha.
I am nowhere close to deciding on a main. I might have to consult this handy chart.
choosing a main out of over 70 characters is hard, so i spent like 3 days in the mountains tirelessly researching to make this flowchart. its 100% accurate and 100% serious. enjoy pic.twitter.com/55Csvrl022
Today has been horrendous for me online. I just lost 1.3 million GSP with Lucas!! Protip: Don't lose 4 battles in a row with a character you've never taken online.
I'm not sure I get the concept of "mains." With over 70 character options, why would you want to choose just one? Honest question. My "main" is "random" and it's awesomely unpredictable fun, variety is the spice of life. It's just a shame that option isn't available in quick play, nor is changing character without leaving. I s'pose I can see why you might want to stick with one character for quick play since you can't switch.
@nate38 You know, it's funny, I was thinking the same thing when I asked that, ha ha. The vs mode challenge board has some that are close to what you said there, though that's a pretty small section of the overall amount.
Well you'll likely never get great with Random set on 70 characters. Some people want to master something, so they pick a main. Should they ever come up against some amazing player (say at a party, or whatever) they want to be able to hold their own rather than get utterly destroyed. It's rarely fun to get utterly destroyed.
I like choosing a main because then I can relax and just have fun without being so competitive. If I know I can win I don't worry so much about winning. Which is weird aloud, but just how it is for me, ha ha. Like the other day we were playing with friends and I was up against someone in Sudden Death that I could have instantly beaten, but I knew it would be more fun for him if I didn't, so I didn't even though I knew I could. I'd rather the experience be fun for everyone, and for me that means being confident that if I changed my mind I could "turn it on" at a moment's notice. I'm sure there's some psychological term and studies for this effect, lol.
Most people don't have just one character they play. But I go with a handful of mains and secondaries over the Random button for a few reasons--
-I like to "rep" my favorite series or characters just because I love their games (and the opposite holds true in a couple cases) -Some characters are simply a lot more fun to play as for me than others (for instance, I find most FE characters to be pretty blah in Smash) -Generally speaking, I'd rather win than lose
It's a double-edged sword. I'm only really good with the N64 roster and a lot of that is because those are the chars I mained over the years (and didn't take the time to really learn new fighters, especially with Smash Wii U - which I didn't play enough of, period). After playing 30 straight 1v1 online matches as Link and then switching over to 4-player rando, well, you saw the results.
Going to try and get better with every character this time around, though. I may start swapping characters in and out in Quick Play just to get the practice in. Hell, I had a really bad run of QP matches today as Link and he's supposedly my best guy.
I s'pose since I don't care about things like practicing or winning and such like that, the idea of sticking with one character or just a few is very unappealing to me. But your responses make sense. If Smash were played at any get-together I'd attend, people would treat it as a casual party game, not some serious competitive fighter, so I wouldn't need to have a "main" character I can use well.
@TheBigG753 One nice thing about the N64 roster is that you know your characters won't get cut!
@J.K. Riki Quick Play is one of the two online modes.
