Celeste on the Switch

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Celeste on the Switch!

So this just came out for Switch and is a pretty fantastic title so far that I haven't really seen anyone talk about here so why not have a thread to bring it to people's attention a bit more? I'm sure that some may pass up on it for now due to being just a Super Meat Boy clone and while it does play similarly, it definitely has a lot more going for it with an involved story, fun characters, creepy and hard hitting themes that I just did not expect. And that soundtrack is so, so good. But back to its gameplay, it's a bit more open in design while still remaining fairly linear but rather than have small set pieces, it's a bigger level with challenge rooms chained together while keeping the exploration aspect for those that want to hunt down for secrets/optional challenges. It never really feels like the game is unfairly hard though and its controls are tight and precise, making overcoming its difficulty a rewarding and fun experience. So check it out if you haven't done so already! And if you have, talk about it here!

Game's on sale! 33% off on the eShop. Decided to finally pick it up for myself.

@nate38

Same here. I was waiting for a sale since I won't be able to start it for a while. I had the money already sitting in the eShop too! BAM! Done. Deal.

Finally dug into this game the other night. It's great! I think I'm mostly over die-and-retry platformers in this vein anymore, but Celeste might be the one I like most.

I finished the story last night, and today I'm going back to find all the collectibles I missed in the A-sides, and then play the B-sides of each chapter as I acquire everything in it. Although I'm still missing the Heart in chapter 1 (I'm guessing it has something to do with the Circling Colorful Birds and the computer console nearby...) and one strawberry in Chapter 5 that I've searched all over for but can't find.

But yeah, basically my whole weekend has been Celeste thus far, and I'm thinking it'll take up most of my free time until Tuesday...having a good time with this one for sure.

And I'm finished with all the C-sides! I don't like that the final one introduced a new mechanic (well, one that was there all along but never required before and so never discovered by the player before) and sorta immediately expects you to master it for use at the end of a long difficult trial. I also didn't love the similarly introduced wall dash-up-slide jump thingy introduced in earlier C-sides (or maybe B-sides?) and how that was required with perfect precision for a bunch of challenges.

But those are really my only complaints for this game. I think it's my favorite platformer of this die-and-retry subgenre, and a lot of that comes from the presentation, which is head and shoulders above its peers.

Looking forward to the upcoming free DLC Chapter 9.

What the... someone finished the C-sides?!

I wish I could say I'm looking forward to the free DLC but isn't it supposed to be harder than the C-sides or something?!

@Zero

I think it's just supposed to be longer, from what I gather...

Hmm, I took "It's after the current hardest levels in difficulty" to mean harder than c-sides but now that I look in context it seems more likely that it just means harder than the hardest normal levels, which would be fine. Just have no interest in anything harder than c-sides, lol.

@Zero Yeah I would think if there's new items/mechanics in there, they would want to show them off in "standard" difficulty levels, not just B/C-sides.

SOON

Oh, if it's standard difficulty then I might check it out! I could replay this game soon.

TOMORROW

TOMORROW HAS COME

I'm playing Chapter 9! It's definitely hard! A few of the early screens in particular had me stumped. (Don't forget you can increase you fall speed by holding down in the air). But I don't think anything has been, like C-sides level hard yet. There are a couple new gimmicks so far, one of which is fairly familiar and another that's a bit more unique, which is the jellyfish. It's pretty cool.

I made it to the first cutscene in the level, where you get the heart but it's a fakeout and you keep going, after about an hour or so? If I had to guess, I'd say I've gone through about 50 screens, which would be halfway through. I do want to keep playing, but I think this is a good stopping point for the night.

Bye-bye, Celeste.

People have already achieved the golden strawberry for this ridiculously long and difficult chapter.

There's some people out there who are really good at video games.

Final stats!

So yeah, Chapter 9 was a doozy. Really long, and definitely up there with the C-sides in difficulty by the end. Definitely a fitting sendoff for this excellent game.

@Secret_Tunnel
Yeah I tried playing a little bit on my laptop with just the keyboard last night and it was impossible. I'll try it with a controller sometime. It would be nice if they'd update the full game with this, as Celeste Classic is already playable in there.
