Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition on the Switch
8.5/10 from one rating

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition on the Switch!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

So I picked this up because Minecraft on a hybrid console is really appealing and man, I am addicted again. I have to say the world generation in this is way better than it was in the Pocket Edition I played before this. I also found a small ice spikes Biome in the world I'm playing in with a little flat clearing in the middle for me to build myself a fortress in.

I am so tempted almost daily to pick this up, ha ha. I LOVED Minecraft on my PC years back. But it also ate up huge amounts of my time. I worry that will strike again, lol.

It's probably inevitable that I'll download it digitally to my Switch one day. For now I'm thankfully content with the games I have, but I know I can't stay away forever. :P

Apparently the Better Together update is literally a different version of minecraft. They literally released the Nintendo Switch Edition than announced plans to replace it a few months later.

Yeah this game is absolutely massive and extremely addicting. There is so much to see and do, it's absolutely a must play in some form and the Switch is one of the best ways to play it right now because of how heavily minecraft benefits from portability.

If you happen to see it go on sale digitally, let me know! I'll probably wait for that, but eventually cave when a sale arrives. :)

UHG, but I shouldn't, because I have too much to play and work to do!

I always get tempted by this game but never actually drop on it. The thing holding me back is it feels a bit vague. Are there real goals besides stay alive / build anything that you want?

@Zero Not really. In Survival, the only real goal is, well, to survive, otherwise you set your own goals. Given the open nature of the game, there's not too much sense of progression, though the more valuable materials like diamonds are found deeper in the ground / caves. However, you can sometimes find them in chests like in villages or mine shafts, so you may get some sooner.

That said, there is an "end" point, though you can of course still keep playing even after you beat it. If you want a set of goals, the general form of progression would be something like this (slight spoilers perhaps?):

-Gather wood to make shelter and starter tools
-Mine stone and coal to make stone tools and a furnace
-Find and mine iron to make iron tools and armor
-Find and mine diamonds to make diamond tools, armor, and an enchantment table
-Enchant tools and armor to make them better, use diamond pickaxe to mine enough obsidian to create a Nether portal
-Enter the Nether and locate a Nether Fortress, then defeat enough Blaze enemies to collect at least six (but preferably more) Blaze Rods
-Collect 12 Ender Pearls, then turn them into Eye of Ender using Blaze Powder (from Blaze Rods)
-Take the Eyes of Ender to a Stronghold and insert them into the End Portal located somewhere within it
-Enter the portal which takes you to a dimension called The End, then defeat the Ender Dragon
-Boom, The End

And that would be a goal-oriented progression of the game, but there are still plenty of other things you could do. For example, there are also End Cities hidden in The End that you could try to find, and they contain a rare item that allows gliding.

@Zero

There are many goals until there are no longer any goals, if that makes sense. I am also not a fan of "endless" games. I like goals and completing stuff. That said, Minecraft is unique because there's a vast sense of progression early on, which tapers to mild progression, which tapers to "Oh, I'll play and enjoy when I feel like, and do something else when I don't." It's unique in many ways, and worth giving a try. Personally I like the progression and goals of the start (build a shack so you don't die, expand that shack so it's nice, find some better ore to make better stuff, basically the things Mop it up said above) so much I tend to play for a few weeks, then start over to experience the fun of the beginning all over again. And that beginning is so much fun it's worth playing just for that. It really is terrific.

Also if you can find a friend or two to play with, I think it gets even better. Still good solo, though.

EDIT: Gosh, just talking about it again makes me itch to play!

I got back into this again. I'm basically at the endgame point where I've already killed the dragon but I still keep finding things to do to spiffy up my ice fortress.

If anyone is interested in this game, it would behoove you to buy it before they update it to the new edition! Otherwise, you won't be able to download the original switch version. I think?

So that better together version is confirmed to launch in June (which includes the retail release as well.) Here's the one feature I want.

-Some form of text or voice chat. FFS mojang, who thought that releasing a version of this game without that was a good idea.
