Disgaea 5 Complete Discussion (Nintendo Switch) [game]

Disgaea 5 Complete on the Switch

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Disgaea 5 Complete on the Switch!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

So I finally started Disgaea 5 Complete, in order to cope with my Rabbits envy. The first thing I did was download all of the available DLC bundles, because why not?

Here's why not: It totally breaks the game and sucks the fun out of it. Every early enemy was basically a one-shot kill.

After starting a new save file, though, I began to really enjoy it. I'm still not very far yet (second chapter), but it's a fun little (big?) turn-based strategy game with tons of mechanics, nice presentation (which loses nothing from the PS4 version), and goofy characters.

I found the controls to be squirelly at first, but, after dipping below maximum cursor speed, they were fine. And it was hard to see/select characters in battle areas with lots of units, due to the large sprites and the isometric view. But the camera rotation options mostly alleviate that problem.

I know that you can micromanage the shit out of your characters or overlevel to the point of absurdity, but I have no interest in that. Even played as a simple strategy game, though, it's still pretty fun! Do you guys have any experience with the Disgaea franchise?

Only tried the demo when that came out, and I enjoyed it, but I don't really like the goofy style. I like plenty of goofy games, but I think I'd need something a bit less silly to motivate me to get into the intricacies of the system. Still, might very well get it if there ever is a big drought and my backlog isn't screaming for attention, 'cause it seems very well crafted overall.

Also, the base hub music is beautiful! Well, until the singer opens her mouth. I don't normally endorse auto-tune, but holy crap. I've been looking for an instrumental version, or a version by a different singer, perhaps in Japanese or whatever, but it doesn't seem to exist.

The hub theme is so weird! It's like prog-soft-jazz. More like an ending theme.

I forgot that this game had a demo. I never tried it because progress doesn't carry over to the full game. Anyway, the battle system seems complex at first, but it really isn't too bad, once you get used to it. Not that I fully understand it. But you can succeed without fully understanding it!

@Anand
Yeah, that's true. I could see the hub theme playing as an alternate theme during the post-game or something.

I don't think the battle system seems complex enough to be off-putting in of itself, but the demo didn't give me the impression that I would be able to find the proper motivation from the plot to get into the whole deal. Btw, the game does have dual audio right?

I guess so. I had no idea!

I've never played a Disgaea game so I had no idea what to expect. I tried out the demo, and for some reason, I wasn't expecting it to be so super-duper anime, dood. It made me want to puke and I had to shut it off immediately. Eventually, I went back to it later and got to the gameplay part, which seemed pretty decent, dood. Things like the combo system seem like they could provide some depth to the battles later on, and there are a lot of ways to build a team, dood. The thing I worry about when a game gives this many options, is if there becomes a point where certain team builds don't work at all, and I'd need to spend a lot of time grinding up the "correct" team, dood. The story and writing is pretty cringe-worthy and seems to throw out every anime trope in the book, it may be hard to stomach when playing the game, dood. I may pick it up sometime if the price gets cheap, dood.

I really want to love the prinnies 'cause I think they look cool and seem to have likeable personalities, but their way of talking really turns me off, dood. Their japanese speak seems much more normal in its quirkiness, somehow. Not this thinly veiled, forced 80's surfer lingo. This is actually why asked about the dual language option, 'cause not having to hear them would go a long way for me, even if I do have to read a 'dood' every now and then.

Super-duper anime craziness is a big plus for me. I played and enjoyed the first 2 or 3 chapters, but then Arms and Splatoon came along and took up all my time. Also, there's some wacky sidequest I have to do a second time before I can continue with the story.

I want to play more, but I have to finish Samus Returns first, and then Mario will come out.

Did you get a Switch? Congratulations!

I don't loooove the characters so far, but I have a pretty high tolerance for cheesy anime stuff.

@Mop it up It's verrrrrrrrrry anime but it also deconstructs anime / gaming in funny ways. Or at least the first one did.

I've spent a bit of time with this, but barely enough to comment on, other than the prinnies are the best.

I like silly and bizarre too, there's just something about anime that's always been unappealing to me. I'm not entirely sure what it is though, dood.

@Zero Yeah, in the demo I did notice a couple of jokes poking fun at the "gaminess" of it, dood.

@Anand I decided to get a Switch instead of a new EpiPen, so I hope I don't come to regret that decision... I got it early for Super Mario Odyssey because I was worried it would be tough to find a system around the actual release of SMO, so I've just tried out some demos to make sure there aren't any defects and now it's going to sit in the box until Mario releases, dood.

@Mop it up Now I'm imagining a scene of you being rushed to the hospital but refusing to let go of your Switch on the way.

@Zero I guess I may end up using the portability of the Switch after all! :D
