Golf Story releases today!!! It seems to mix Golf and RPG-like elements in a totally unique way.

I'm excited for some golfing sim action but with a deep storyline and really interesting gameplay elements. A Switch Exclusive! Fifteen bucks it seems is the MSRP.

Who's buying?

So I'm not a big golf guy (mini-golf is more my style, regular golf is kinda boring.)

But I just found out an interesting quirk about this game that piqued my interest. Perhaps I should look into this when all the bugs are sorted out.

How does the golf section actually play? Is it the same sort of usual nonsense with club selection, and power and all that jazz?

Yes, pretty much your standard golf affair. Press button to start, press again to set power, press third time to set accuracy. Plus all sorts of precision and flight adjustments.

What quirk out of curiosity? I know a patch has been submitted to Nintendo already, so fixes to issues I had (which were minor) might be incoming.

It's a minor spoiler to do with the ending. I'll hyperlink to it so as not to not to wreck it.

Now that I finished Persona 5 I've been getting back into this game.

Has anyone run into an issue where during a challenge even though you definitely did not beat it... it thinks you did? This has happened to me a few times now. I'll be sucking on a challenge and then SUCCESS pops up on the screen. Once it happened before I even got my last chance.

@Zero

Never happened to me. You're quite lucky.

@TheOldManFromZelda Yeah but last night I had a bug in the other direction. The one where you need to hit the ball into 5 different color bird circles to test what they do with the ball or whatever. I went one by one, got all five... it only counted four. So I had to do it over.

Not a huge deal, but it's a tad bit weird how buggy this game is about simple things. I know the reality of indie dev is more difficult than most people realize (like just last night, somehow we were talking about bugs in my game with my family and my mom was like "just have all of your friends play it before you put it out!" and I was like "yeah but I mean... in reality that means like maybe 10 people play it and probably 9 of them never finish it and there are like a nearly infinite amount of code paths in my code so a bunch of nasty bugs would probably never be found that way...") but a lot of this stuff is like basic counting and such, no idea how it got messed up this bad.

I still like the game and ultimately it's not a huge deal, just sort of odd to me. And I THINK I just installed an update last night (unless it was just a system update) so maybe that would fix some things.

@Shadowlink

Oh yeah, that. Might have something to do with where the developer is from...

Finished. A pretty enjoyable game. Though I definitely ran into more bugs than in most games. But fun nonetheless. Lots of neat gameplay and some real charm. Like the variety of the game and the various challenges... it even had a part that reminded me of a part in Super Mario Odyssey (the RC car stuff) though this game came first so... NINTENDO RIPPED IT OFF?!

I had a lot of fun with it too but I really felt like it could have ended a course sooner.

Super late to the party, but I bought this in a sale last week. It's great! Fun characters, nails the humor, golf mechanics that are intricate without being too complex (I'm like 8 hours in and haven't used Focus at all or figured out how to control slice/fade or anything like that), and the various challenges all tie into the basic golf system but have just enough variety to keep from getting old.

But yeah, as others have said it's very buggy and lacks some basic features. Why can't I quit or restart a challenge? If I whiff the second shot of the alternate course at Oak Manor I know I might as well start over, but I still have to take the remaining 14 shots to end the challenge. That's maddening.

It's also strange to me that you can't free-camera across the hole you're on to plan your approach. You only get to peek past your shot line with the right stick.

Also, I know this was an early Switch game, but this game definitely needs shareable replay videos. I just got a Hole-in-one followed by a really nice Mega Eagle with my driver from the fairway that the world needs to witness!

The only real "bug" I've witnessed was on the Oak Manor alternate course, where I sank the penultimate hole with my last shot...and then the game continued on to the final hole when I was out of shots. It gave me one shot (my 17th of 16) before the failure triggered.

For all these complaints about things that seem like basic features, I'm having a great time with it so far.

Finished all of the story, and all of the golf too! Took about 16 hours to 100%(?) this bad boy. I haven't dipped into GALF yet, though.

But yeah, great game! It's not quite a challenger for the crown of Best Golf Game, as Kirby's Dream Course has that locked up now and forever. But that's an incredibly high bar to clear, and Golf Story at least deserves an ostensible nomination.

@nate38

Which games are in the running for second place?
