Chicken Wiggle Discussion (Nintendo 3DS) [game]

Chicken Wiggle on the 3DS

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Chicken Wiggle on the 3DS!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!
Have any of you guys picked this one up? It's the new Jools Watsham joint, fresh off the splintering of Renegade Kid.

Chicken Wiggle is a 2D platformer with a full suite of level creation and sharing tools and a campaign which shows off its possibilities. I've only played through the first world (and some balls-hard user-created levels), but it seems like a very polished experience so far. The main campaign is much easier than Mutant Mudds, and each level has given me ideas for the creation mode.

Chicken Wiggle serves as a nice, modest indie alternative to Super Mario Maker, since it plays completely differently, the sharing is well-done, and it has several unique level gimmicks to string together. The 3D effect is nice, too. I bought it near launch mainly to support Jools' new company, Atooi. He always seems like such a likeable and sincere guy. I hope that Atooi finds success. I believe that Treasurenauts will be its follow-up game on the 3DS/Switch.

I didn't even know this game existed, which doesn't bode well for sales.

Seems like it reviewed ok.

I might pick this up at some point, but I've kind of soured on Jools's stuff a little bit. I like his games, and he seems like a nice guy, but he keeps announcing games left and right and there's no apparent logic to what releases when. I've been waiting for Treasurenauts for so long that I've lost interest in that, and now there's some game with a chicken coming out first? Maybe I'm just being grumpy and petty, but it's kind of tiring being a fan of his stuff.

@Zero
It is a fairly impressive package, for an indie game. I think that it's getting ported to the Switch (without the 3D), so it has a couple of chances to hit.

@r_hjort
I dunno. I kind of empathize with him, since Renegade Kid has always seemed pretty tiny, and his new company seems even tinier. I'm sure that they're probably struggling just to survive. He has regular-ish vlogs on Youtube (which cover more than his games), and it seems that Treasurenauts had a break, but is now actively being worked on.

I know of it. I'm planning on downloading it after Backlaugust is done with. Look forward to my impressions!

@Anand
But I think that's what confuses me. They were always a small team, and as you say, the new team's probably even smaller, so why not focus on one project at a time rather than a handful, going back and forth between games?

Despite my previous grumpiness, this is really sad to read.

@r_hjort I mean, putting something on the 3DS eShop only at this point? Probably should have put it on Switch as well.
09/07/17, 23:38
@Zero
He really should, yeah. I know I would have been more keen on getting it if it had been a Switch release, even though I still love my 3DS and play it quite a bit. This sort of thing can probably only work somewhat well for franchises with an established fanbase on the 3DS.

Still, it's sad that this happens to a talented and - as far as I know - nice guy. He really needs someone to help him out with general strategy, planning and marketing at this point.

Poor guy! For once, I have no regrets about paying full price. He really DID need the support!

I finished the campaign, by the way. It actually took me five hours to almost 100% it. The last boss was a bitch, but the end was awesome. Not to oversell it. It's understated!

By the way, it IS coming to the Switch. I don't remember when, though.

I've heard that a lot of these late-life 3DS games are underperforming. Pubs and devs probably didn't think the 3DS audience would immediately jump whole-hog onto the Switch.
09/08/17, 04:56
@Anand I don't know that the audience has all jumped to the Switch, I mean, it has sold a few million versus like 50 or 60 million or whatever?

But the 3DS to me seems to be at that point where people aren't really actively thinking about it much anymore.

Right now, indies are a large part of the Switch, so I do think that is having a factor on 3DS game sales for everyone who has bought a Switch or plans to do so soon. That said, I think there are many factors at play here, including the age of the platform, plus the 3DS eShop is becoming overcrowded with so many titles that it's tough for any singe one to get noticed. However, I also think the low sales are not just problems with the 3DS. I don't want to sound like a mainstream dumb-butt, but "Chicken Wiggle" is not a good title for an actually good game. If I saw it when I was browsing the eShop and knew nothing about it, it's the kind of title I would simply brush off as being shovelware, especially with its $14.99 price tag.

I do hope the game is more successful when it goes to Switch than it's been on 3DS.

My thoughts exactly. The shovelware-sounding name is doubly bad when you consider that the game can't even bank on the semi-popular "Renegade Kid" brand as developer. Can it at least be advertised as "from the developer of Mutant Mudds or something like that? Not that it would really help its eShop presence, but it would at least be something.

@Mop it up@GameDadGrant
I guess the title IS kind of weird, but it's supposed to be a Banjo Kazooie-esque game with a chicken and a worm.

Wiggle is the worm.
09/13/17, 03:35
@Anand Why doesn't the chicken have a name?
09/14/17, 19:33
Eh, skipping it. Mostly because Atooi/Renegade Kid has been sitting on Treasurenauts (which looks decent enough) for how long now to put out other stuff? Jools said it was essentially done two+ years ago...and now we basically get a Mutant Mudds clone from the company that made Mutant Mudds.

Sorry, can't get behind this one. Might try it on Switch, but not on 3DS.

Game is on sale this week for a cool $10. Just FYI!

@ludist210 used "Spiteful Buying Tactics"

IT'S SUPER EFFECTIVE!

09/14/17, 22:27
To be fair, the concept seems solid, but it looks like a slightly more fleshed out Mutant Mudds, a game that I wasn't a big fan of.
09/15/17, 00:20
Nah, that's cool and of course I only give friendly ribbing here.

For me though? I'm kind of a big fan of Mutant Mudds (100%'d the original game and all of its DLC, and currently working through the "Super Challenge" version!) so I'm down for whatever Jools puts out on the ol' eShop. I too share your disappointment with the release (er, non-release) of Treasurenauts, but...eh. It is what it is. I'm not gonna let a potential "vaporware" game stop me from enjoying another game that is great from the same developer. Especially one that I have an interest in.

On the other hand (and to be completely fair) I didn't buy Chicken Wiggle right away. So, I'm not gonna automatically jump on whatever comes out. So I'll bite on it, but at the discounted price.

EDIT: Sorry Jools, but I've bought all your other $#!+ at full price (plus I've chipped in on your Cult County KickStarter), so you can give me a damn $5 discount on this game!

@Mop it up
He might be named 'Chicken'.

@ludist210
It actually has a much smoother difficulty curve than Mutant Mudds. And is more heavy on platforming than combat. Plus, level creation! The basic controls do feel pretty similar to Mutant Mudds, though.

@Anand

Sounds a bit better, but I don't really play my 3DS much anymore...and really, I want to like Jools' stuff, but I generally...don't. Though Xeodrifter was pretty good.
