Mario Kart 8 DX has some MASSIVE improvements [roundtable]

No, I'm not talking about the resolution bump or the LAN play or the multiple item slots or even the Battle Mode...

I'm talking about automatic acceleration, baby! It's in! Finally! Masahiro Sakurai showed us the true future of arcade racing games 14 years ago, but even Nintendo didn't realize it. Until now.

Gone are the days of mindlessly mashing down the same button for the entire race! Gone are the days of discomfort and hand cramps!

The revolution starts here, people.

That "steering assist" will do wonders for my daughter's ability to play this game. Whenever we play as a family, she's constantly driving off the ledge and/or plowing right into the walls/guardrails. Of ANY stage.

Assuming, of course, that I even bother to get this game. Which I probably won't. I'm not too keen on paying full price for what is essentially more DLC for this game that I already own (and already bought DLC for!). I was cool buying Street Fighter IV again when SUPER Street Fighter IV came out (on PS3/360) because it was $20 less and had tons of new stuff. If Nintendo isn't going to offer me AT LEAST $20 off "re-buying" this game, they can go pound dirt.

I like MK64 and MK8s drift best.

@DrFinkelstein Variety is the spice of life, as they say. Whoever "they" are. I switch around character and vehicle combos all the time, who cares about being "good" with anything, it's all about fun! I would get bored using the same thing all the time.

@Guillaume Yeah, the auto drift is part of the reason why people I know still prefer MKWii over MK8. Having auto-steering takes things too far.

Wow! Are you telling me some people can really notice the difference between 59 and 60 fps? Crazy.

And if Andre is bothered by that he should try Bloodborne LOL.

@deathly_hallows

Lol even when it was slowed down and I knew what I was looking for I couldn't spot it.

I feel bad for people who notice stuff like that and let it bother them.

I've heard about this problem before, but I've also never been able to see it. I'm kind of sensitive to framerate issues, in general, but ONE repeated frame?

It's cool that they fixed it, although I would much rather that they fixed the drop to 30fps in 3-4 player. It's the only blemish that remains on the DX version. Well, that and some lacking options for Battle Mode, but there's still a chance that those could get patched in.

I really don't want Mario Kart 9. What would be the point? I hope that they just polish this game to a shine and continue to release DLC with a similar value proposition to the MK8 DLC.

A bunch of new courses. Some new items. Some new gimmick maybe.

Online modes that don't arbitrarily limit you.

Well it wasn't *noticeable* noticeable, but it was noticeable lol, at least after you learn what to look for. I remember being able to see the slightest half hitch every now and then but it was usually when there was no action like just speeding straight to the finish line or something. But I forget if I only noticed if after being told about it. Others claimed they saw it right from the beginning though.

D. L. C.

Wat'cha really waaaant.

Nintendo can have Retro or somebody pump that stuff out and free up the Mario Kart team to work on more stuff like ARMS.

Same here. This is the definitive Mario Kart and it's amazing, let's sit on it for five years and let the studios work on new stuff. Then Mario Kart 9 can blow us away when it ends up being a HUGE step up.

Same goes for Zelda and Smash!

@Anand Yeah but this goes back to the whole "desire" versus "actually realistic" thing. Nintendo is not going to release a whole new game's worth of content in DLC, complete with new items and new gameplay "gimmicks" and tweaked controls and such. What you'd actually get, at most, is a trickle of new content. And to be frank, I think we already got most of the new stuff we will get. The fact that there isn't even a single new cup in the port doesn't bode well for multiple cups in the future or anything.

Versus a whole new game. I'll take the whole new game, thanks! You can rebuy your old game with small upgrades in the hopes that it gets a steady stream of content in the future. Not for me.

Might as well ask for EA to stop making new sports games every year and just update stuff through DLC. Ha ha ha ha right.

@Anand

You would square Retro away working on DLC for a Mario Kart game? I know we talked about civility and all, but you have to know that you're the worst of the worst!
04/25/17, 22:08
@Stephen
Sorry, but everybody has their limits. I refuse to be civil about Metroid Prime.

I liked DKCR, though.

@Zero
Have fun waiting for your new game! Meanwhile, I will play the crap out of the old one (and challenge every single person I come across in my daily life).

Srsly, I'm usually a DLC hater, but I really enjoyed the DLC that they delivered for MK8. A decent amount of tracks which are arguably cooler than the ones in the base game. Plus, let those guys work on something else! ARMS could be a great new IP. Let's see what else they have up their sleeves. I'm not sure how much noticeable technical improvement they could get out of the Switch, anyway.
04/25/17, 23:18
Yeah the MK 8 DLC was awesome.

...I just don't see much likelihood that it will be repeated at that level for this version with new content.
04/26/17, 00:02
@Zero
Maybe, maybe not. But DLC is generally more profitable than a retail product.
04/26/17, 00:34
I think it'd be cool if they'd go back and just remake the entirety of earlier games in the series, one every 6 months. I'd be up for a completely redone Super Mario Kart. include all the Battlemode maps as well.
04/26/17, 15:56
I used to be able to play SMK very well wheb i was a KID but I swear the shit was damn near impossible when I played it last on VC for Wii U (or was it Wii?).

It was not a pleasant experience.
04/26/17, 21:02
@carlosrox It's definitely a tougher game, it doesn't really have drift turning and such so you need to get good angles / the right speed for each turn.

I still love it! In some ways it feels like the MK where skill matters most, it was before they started creating a bunch of mega items to give to people who were failing. There were single red shells and stars but otherwise nothing too crazy.

Yeah, the controls are incredibly different from current Mario Kart games. And quite peculiar. But I got kind of used to them after a while.

Man, does the AI cheat in that game, though. Maddening.

Exactly this. The AI in that game is scum.

And yeah the controls are tough. I don't remember the game being so damn hard. It's 'swear at the TV' type hard. I basically rage quit the damn thing.
