The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ includes Rebirth, Afterbirth, and the Afterbirth+ expansion and will be launching with the system March 3rd on both retail and digital formats.

It's cool to see this hit launch since it's generally well-received. I'll probably pass on it myself since the content and subject matter are not really my thing, but more games from the start is always good news.

Let's see if Konami can match or beat that $39.99 price with Super Bomberman R now...

PS. "6th Switch" is hard to say.

Not funny.

I got you mostly there. All you needed to do is click!

@Mop it up
It was never released on WiiWare so I doubt it had a demo. Only demo I know of was one released for the flash version of the game which is super rough around the edges, even back then.

Y'know what? I changed my mind. This game is pretty neat. I finally gave my PSN+ copy of Rebirth a chance. The power-ups make for quite a varied play experience, with some of them even trivializing the difficulty. I still don't like the aesthetic, but I do enjoy the little cartoon nightmares that Isaac has at the end of each stage.

Vive le Roguelike!

(Risk of Rain, which I've also been playing, has some serious issues, though.)

Since this has been bumped, I should point out that it now slipped out of the launch day window. But we are getting Shovel Knight instead!

@Anand
I've played a bit of Risk of Rain with friends, and i definitely think that is where it shines. I find the game pretty shallow overall though, but still fun.

Yup, Risk of Rain is a really juicy/crunchy/polished game about glorified grinding that's pretty fun with a couple friends but doesn't have much depth.

Breath of the Afterbirth

I'm not a doctor, but that doesn't sound normal.

Yeah, I dumped a decent amount of hours into Risk of Rain, since it was kind of addictive. The mechanics and power-ups are neat, but, like you guys said, it also feels sort of empty and shallow.

I just assumed that the multiplayer was an afterthought, though. I'll have to try it out.

I also grabbed Crypt of the Necrodancer in the same recent PSN Flash Sale. Haven't put much time into it yet, but it seems pretty promising.

I got hooked on Crypt of the Necrodancer. Some of the boss fights were hilarious

No official Binding of Isaac topic??

I've been getting more into the Switch game. It's pretty nuts, and surprisingly polished. You can never take the enemies for granted, either. Unless you're crazily overpowered.

I'll hang out in the thread if you create one. Played the Switch game more or less the whole summer last year, and still go for a run or two every once in a while. Still discovering new things and ways to screw up.

We should just make this into the official thread, that's how it usually works right?

Which I would have done but I'm confused, we have a game called "The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth +" in the database, is this a different game or the same as "The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth +" and it just had its name changed since it was announced or something?
05/12/18, 18:59
@Zero
The Switch game is "The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth +". The previous version of the game was Rebirth, and as far as I know there's no Rebirth + at all. I guess it's just a typo in the database.

There, officialized.

Cool!

Have you guys used FAQs to get through? I haven't spoiled too much, but I do look up the occasional item.

Also, do you activate unknown pills?

I'm not sure how much progress I've made, but I've unlocked most of the characters and just beat Satan for the first time. Haven't dipped into Hard Mode or Greed Mode yet. What should I be doing to unlock more stuff at this point?

Also, this is a game that really belongs on the ol' SD card, but the Nicalis tax probably prevents that from happening. They've been surprisingly adamant about avoiding the race to the bottom. Isaac is definitely worth the 40 bones, but I'm not too sure about the briefer experiences. (Granted, most of those are $30...)

@Anand
I tend not to use FAQs for games in general unless I suspect I've come across some glitch or bug, or I want to look something up after having dealt with it. One of the things I like the most about Isaac is running into weird items that I don't know what they do, and then just suffer through the consequences.

I activate mysterious pills as soon as I find them if I'm early on in the run and feel like I don't have anything to lose. There are some bad ones for sure, but I feel like I can compensate for them if I chomp them down at the start of the game. A couple of floors down I never use pills unless I've had them before, I've got PHD or I'm just that desperate.

What kind of builds do you tend to go for? HP? Attack? Speed? Other quirks?

@r_hjort
Trying items out and seeing the effects is cool, but I hate trying stuff out and not even understanding what changed. That's usually when I FAQ it up. (Also before I make a deal with the Devil.)

I wasn't using ANY pills before. Now I pop them all.

And I'm not good enough to go for any particular build yet. I just take it as it comes. Extra speed, damage, and tears are always nice, though. So is that laser circle thingy.

@Anand
Ah, I can see that. There sure are a ton of items that don't seem to do much unless you do something specific, are in a specific situation or combine the item with something specific.
