To me, the person on your team who performs the most poorly in firefights--or whoever is using a roller--should hang back and fill in all the nooks and crannies on your part of the map. Spending 25% of your team's effort during the first half of the match for some guaranteed territory is definitely worth it, since you can always bounce back in the second half of the match if you play your cards right.

I agree with this, as "the person on your team who performs the most poorly" lol. What I do is RUSH the middle as quickly as I can, only laying down a path to that end. Then, when I am inevitably killed (quickly and with little challenge) I will spend my time after the first respawn filling in the base area. I'm more helpful at that point to my team doing that than rushing back to the center and getting killed yet again.

One day, maybe, I will have a steady hand/nerves to hold my own in a firefight, but at the moment I'm practically worthless there. At least I can get a solid 5-10% of map filled in if I use my time around the base. Then, after that, I try to go back to the middle and help cover existing other-team-paint.

@Guillaume It varies, and depends on what weapon I'm using. If I'm using a weapon good at painting, I'll fill in all the spots I can when I have the opportunity. But if my weapon is good for combat but poor at painting, I'll focus on fighting and hope that someone with a better painting weapon will fill in the cracks.

In the first game, I found that most people were out for blood and went after the opponents with a single-minded fury usually seen in AI. Many people treat Turf War as a deathmatch, which is it not. This meant it was typically up to me to paint our side of the map whether my weapon was suited for it or not. I didn't mind it too much though, as I enjoy the painting more than the fighting, It's safe to say that I've been on teams which would have lost without me there to paint, and I've seen many an opposing team adept at fighting go down simply because they left many bare spots on their side.

@Guillaume Basically I think if you have an actual team strategy it'd probably be good for the person who gets splatted the most to stick back early on and just fill things out a bit more. I often do this because I get splatted a lot.

But when you're playing with a bunch of random strangers and no way to communicate... hard to say what is best. Sometimes everyone just ends up in the same small patch for too long and the other team takes advantage of that.

Is it bad that I never use grenade/subweapons? That button might as well never exist for me.

Also haven't found a weapon that I like more than the Splattershot, haha. Maybe I'll give the N-Zap a shot, but I still love my old standby.

@Secret_Tunnel Like 90% of the time I try to use them, I don't have enough ink anyway.

@Secret_Tunnel
Subweapons are handy in that they're lower risk than charging in ahead. You can ink turf that's a fair distance away, and if you get lucky with your bombs, sometimes you get a free Splat out of it.

@TriforceBun

They're also great to make people who are trying to hide be out and on the move then surprise them.

I dunno if this still holds true, but in the first game, some of the subs were the best weapons in the game. I remember that I never used the subs much when I first started playing, in part because I have trouble reaching the L and R buttons on the GamePad. When I finally figured out how to use them, I improved considerably. The bombs in particular are very handy, especially for the weapons with lower range than the throw distance of the bombs. The regular and sticky bombs are great at forcing an opponent out of hiding behind cover and trying to draw them into range, and the Burst Bombs are a nice way to finish off an opponent if you've gotten a few shots in but then they moved out of range. Disrupter and Point Sensor are nice too, if they still exist.

Splatbrella is awesome.

So is Ranked. I think all weapons are a lot more useful in Ranked since the pace/focus is so different.

I don't want to be the guy who just comes in here every once in a while and only yaps about the plaza posts, but what is going on with these things?!

Today all but three of the posts I see have some kind of pro-LGBTQ message or a simple message stating the sexual orientation of its poster. I can obviously get behind the support for the LGBTQ community, but why in Splatoon 2? Why now? Where did all the furries go? I don't understand anything anymore!

Also, someone had just straight up drawn the ol' cock and balls. The head of the penis might have been meant to resemble the head of a squid, but it's hard to say. I wonder if Nintendo feels that the whole replacing-Miiverse-with-mainstream-social-media-for-extra-word-of-mouth-advertising strategy is working out for them so far.

I'm not as upset as I may sound. I'm just utterly confused and lost.

I don't want to speak too much about things I barely know about, but isn't there some kind of link between furries and LGBTQ stuff? Maybe not that big of a shift after all. I imagine the timeline went down something like this...

1. Furries post a bunch of stuff.
2. Others who don't like furries or are annoyed by it in Splatoon post back, sometimes in bigoted ways.
3. Furries start defending themselves.
4. Other LGBTQ people see this little post war going on and, not liking bigotry, jump in, expanding things.
5. People who don't like LGBTQ or are annoyed by it in Splatoon post back, sometimes in bigoted ways.

And here we are.

As for why there are so many furries to begin with, I dunno, but it IS a game about half human half animal characters so maybe that isn't that surprising.

@Zero
I suppose that's how things might have happened, but I find it weird how distinct the trends have been. Like, first it was all furries, and now there are no furries anymore. Even if a bunch of bigots decided to push back against the furries and the LGBTQ folks responded to that, how come the furries disappeared altogether? I would expect there to be at least some furry stuff still going on what with how frequent it was before. Granted, my plaza might not be representative of what goes on everywhere else, but I still think it's weird. Does Nintendo have some sort of algorithm for sorting out popular themes in posts and finding more of the same? But how would that even work?
08/20/17, 23:36
Watching as I've been playing the last week or two. How Zero put it is pretty much how it happens. I think the 'Fresh' button is how they decide what should rise to the top generally. This should pass eventually I would think and a new meme would come. Not that LGBTQ is a meme but via Splatoon 2 it almost becomes one in part.
08/21/17, 03:19
@DrFinkelstein
Oops, I totally forgot about the 'fresh' button! Yeah, of course they're using that, that makes sense.

The second is the Splatoon 2 community. So, Splatoon 2's pseudoMiiverse has been going along pretty well. There's a lot of good fanart, some clever memes, and it went quite well. I especially loved the recent trans positivity posts. They made a pleasant community better. So, what happened next? Well, a shitty backlash. People posting "there are only two genders" memes sucks, but people legit posted some awful stuff like "Trans people all have mental illnesses" and I think I briefly saw a post up about how trans people should kill themselves. I'm quitting Splatoon 2 now, and don't even think I'm going to try the voice chat stuff knowing the quality of the community.

Nintendo needs to get the fuck on this.

This is a problem of not having Miiverse. Is there any sort of moderation on these posts?
08/21/17, 22:37
@Mop it up
I think you can report them, but considering how things have turned out I don't think Nintendo gives much of a shit about that. I kind of wish some sort of scandal would happen to make them reconsider their approach, but I guess they'd just shut down the feature instead of actually dealing with anything. The Splatoon community used to be silly, friendly and weird in a good way, and look at it now.

To think Nintendo shut down Swapnote on the 3DS, but now they've connected their games' community functions to friggin' Twitter. Idiots. I wish Iwata was still around.

Yeah, the less Splatoon (or any Nintendo game) resembles Facebook and Twitter, the better.
08/22/17, 03:31
@TriforceBun

While I don't have any problem with the pro-Trans/LGBT message in the Splatoon2-sphere, I guess one bummer I have is that it only seems to handle one topic at a time. I feel like in Splatoon on Wii U with Miiverse that was different. I have no idea if that's because of Miiverse or not but I'd like to see more variety along with what's there now (or will be when the next singular theme hits).

Ranked is way better than Turf Wars, come at me.

Weapons are more useful, teamplay seems more important, and matches are found way quicker. I never have terrible lobby waits in Ranked like I do Turf Wars.

So, what do we all think about the upcoming content? I'm pretty stoked, myself! I'm too lazy to post pictures or even link properly, but for those of you who've missed it: Splatoon 2 is getting one new standard stage, one new subweapon and a new salmon run stage. I don't think I'm forgetting anything.

The turf war/ranked/league stage is called the Manta Maria and is basically the deck of a huge sailboat.

The subweapon is a bubble blower that sends a few, huge soap bubbles towards your enemies. You can then shoot your bubbles to overload them with ink and have them explode.

The salmon run stage is an abandoned settlement of sorts, I think. Has the same general look of the two previous ones, but its layout is quite different in that the middle is the remains of a house, which means there is reduced visibility and choke points in places.

@carlosrox
Agreed. Somewhat. Not sure I've noticed a big difference in wait times and stuff, but there might be some.

In general though, I think turf war is a lot of fun, and a genius concept that's way more accessible and interesting than standard team deathmatch type modes, but ranked is really awesome. I love how it forces me to think more about my gear and my tactics. I use many weapons in ranked that I barely even look at in turf war.
