Pretty light this week.

Though with the release of Demon's Crest on 3DS, I'm pretty sure this marks the first time the entire Gargoyle's Quest trilogy is playable on a single piece of hardware.

Neat. Someone take a picture, I want this for my album.

Capcom is killing it with Super Nintendo VC games on 3DS. Now if only some other devs would jump on board besides Nintendo and Capcom.

AND FYI FOR ANYONE THAT DECIDES TO DOWNLOAD THE NEW ZELDA "THEMES" OFF MY NINTENDO. THREE OF THEM ARE NOT THEMES FOR YOUR 3DS DESKTOP, THEY ARE 3D VIDEOS WHOSE DOWNLOAD CODES YOU REDEEM IN THE ESHOP, NOT THE THEME SHOP.

I had to call Nintendo about why my download codes wouldn't work, and even their customer service people couldn't figure it out. A friend of mine I talked to right after set me straight.

Other M! Finally.

Right? Right?!

...No?

With all the people bitching about Metroid Other M everywhere (not just you, Tim!), I'm starting to wonder if Nintendo released it on VC to distract from the fact that Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon is the bigger pile of shit.

Haha. Tinfoil hats for all!

In all seriousness I didn't hate Other M, and thought that with some polishing up we could get a good sequel.

Just wondering who exactly was asking for this on VC .

@Guillaume Haha I was gonna say, this week we get two of the less popular entries in two of Nintendo's beloved franchises. Other M had its problems, but it's still worth playing or at least talking about. All you can really say about Shadow Dragon is that it's probably the worst FE game available in the west.

Demon's Crest?! Awesome. I just played Gargoyle's Quest and greatly enjoyed it. I had given up on playing the sequels since they're rare, obscure games that are expensive to own hard copies of and unlikely to be rereleased. But then just out of the blue, here's Demon's Crest on the 3DS. It's a weird feeling to go from thinking you'd never get to play a game to it just being released unceremoniously. But I'm not complaining!

Why? What makes it bad?

Aww I really like Shadow Dragon. Plus it's not insulting to longtime fans or the rest of its series in the same way Other M or Fates are.

I mean, it's missing the touches and additions that put other Fire Emblem games ahead of it, but I still enjoy it for what it is.

@Mr_Mustache It's a "remake" of the original game that didn't add a whole lot so it feels super basic next to pretty much every other Fire Emblem game in the West. I mean, it's not bad, it's just... feels like a big step back from what we're used to in a lot of ways.

@Zero

With that in mind, I understand why people aren't so fond of it. But I enjoy how much the game focuses on Marth's journey and his growth as a character. The narration, and pre-map dialogue typically focus on the lore of the world and Marth's personal response to it.

That said, I probably would have preferred having the other characters be more developed. But I'm also happy with a story that is centered around a single character. I wouldn't want other Fire Emblem games to be like this (which is part of the reason I didn't like Fates now that I think about it), but I think it worked for this game.

@Hero_Of_Hyrule I liked Shadow Dragon fine, it's a decent enough Fire Emblem game. I just prefer every other FE game I've played (which I guess doesn't include Fire Emblem GBA and Fates). It's fun enough, but it just sorta feels like a step down from the others in almost every way. The stripped down features, the lackluster art style, the bonkers secret mission unlock requirements, the smaller variety of unit types and tactics...it was nice to finally get a game with that Marth guy from Smash 2, though. And I still wish we'd gotten its Japan-exclusive sequel, if only to complete the Marth duology.

I always try to start tackling my Fire Emblem backlog by starting with the first game, chronologically speaking, Shadow Dragon. And then I fade out for a couple of years. Until I try to get through Shadow Dragon again.

@Anand

Shadow Dragon probably isn't for you then. Try Sacred Stones, "Fire Emblem", or Path of Radiance instead. They all offer what's great about the series while easing players into things and are more likely to satisfy you if you feel Shadow Dragon is somehow lacking.

I actually wasn't hating it completely. I just sort of fizzled out. But maybe I will try to get through one of the GBA ones, instead.

I came around on Shadow Dragon after revisiting it. There are just so many units that are given to you, it's easy to get under leveled if you don't focus on a core team. Once I did that the game was much less annoying. Also, while playing Awakening I found some cool looking classic characters that were from Shadow Dragon. I hadn't encountered them previously because you had to let most of your units die to get them. So I played again with this in mind and it worked out well with my core team approach.

As for Other M, I haven't revisited it since playing it for the first time. I really should give it another look. It had its' faults (mainly the pixel hunt bits), but I still enjoyed it overall. And I still think Samus being able to do some melee combat is badass.

@Hero_Of_Hyrule

You can get all three Gargoyle's Quest games on (New)3DS! Enjoy the trilogy, anywhere you like!

@nate38

Ooh, definitely get around to playing the Fire Emblem game on GBA. Not Sacred Stones, the one just named Fire Emblem. That game, along with Path of Radiance and Awakening are the three best games in the series, IMHO.

Fire Emblem is available for download on Wii U's GBA Virtual Console. You can even get a discount on it through MyNintendo!

I'm sure copies of Other M can still be found for under $20, maybe even new ones too.

Shadow Dragon though, has really gone up in price. I'm a bit curious about it, though the complaints I hear about it sound like the kind of ones I'd share, so the game probably isn't for me.

@Hero_Of_Hyrule Isn't Demon's Crest already on the Wii U?

@WrathOfSamus777 Ha ha, I was confused by that at first from reading the reward titles, but the descriptions for them say they're a video you download from the eShop. Still, they probably shouldn't have used the word "theme" and used some other term for music.
