Oh, Gurumin! I had that on PSP. I must have sold it since it's no longer in my library. Maybe I'll grab the 3DS version for keeps.

Isn't Canvas Curse supposed to be this great game?

Holy shit I just realized to this day I still haven't bought a single Kirby game. Wow. I have gotten mkre and more interested as time has gone on but still haven't bit the bullet.

@carlosrox For most people who bought the DS early on, Kirby Canvas Curse was the first game that made them go "Okay, there's something special to this touch-screen gimmick!" It probably doesn't have the same effect today, but it's still a solid little game, and one of Kirby's more distinguished spinoffs (and he's got a lot of great ones!)

But if you're looking for your "first" Kirby game, I'd highly recommend getting Kirby Super Star from the Wii U virtual console. People note it as a sort of precursor to Super Smash Bros., what with its simple but engaging controls, flashy and surprisingly varied combat, fun minigames and "side-game" twists on its own gameplay formula, and even that distinguishable Sakurai sense of humor.

Honestly, Kirby Super Star strikes me as something right up Carlosrox Alley. Especially if you have someone to play co-op with! But it's still fantastic solo, too.

I'll second the recommendation for Kirby Super Star. It's got that Sakurai polish all over it, and really a must-play for any fan of Smash Bros.

As far as Canvas Curse goes, it's very solid; I might suggest its sequel though, Rainbow Curse, which is a charming and rather overlooked Wii U game. It also still might have the best visuals on the system, IMO.

@TriforceBun Yeah, Rainbow Curse vs. Canvas Curse is interesting. I still think Canvas Curse has the better core "feel" to it and certainly isn't lacking in any regard, but Rainbow Curse absolutely has way more content, polish, and variation. Of course, Canvas Curse is presumably $10 on the VC, and Rainbow Curse is probably still $30+ wherever you buy it, so that's a factor...

Price considerations aside, I'd probably give Rainbow Curse a slightly higher recommendation myself.

I'm going to disagree with everyone else and say go get Canvas Curse. But that's because even my favorite Kirby platformers don't compare to the "alternative" Kirby games to me, and Canvas Curse was one of the best. There is only one Kirby game I would put above it and I think you know which one I'm DREAMing of, of COURSE.

I'm also going to go against the grain and say Kirby's Return to Dream Land is a good place to start with the series, partly because Kirby Super Star is one of my least-fave Kirby games. The only problem is that getting a copy on Wii isn't cheap, though I think it may be available on the Wii U VC. For a cheaper alternative, Kirby's Adventure on NES still holds up nicely.

It's interesting, but Kirby is one of the few series where I would not recommend starting with the original game, Kirby's Dream Land on Game Boy. Not because it isn't a good game, simply because it doesn't have the copy abilities that have become the star staple of the series. Therefore, I don't think the game shows much of what the series has to offer. Kirby's Adventure, the second game, is where copy abilities were introduced, so it's part of why I feel it's a good starting point.

@Zero For most people I'd recommend Canvas Curse (and most Kirby spinoffs) in a heartbeat. But for Carlos's tastes in particular I'm not sure how he'd like it, whereas I'm confident he'll love Kirby Super Star.

@Mop it up I was thinking of recommending Return to Dream Land myself (and I believe it's available for $20 on the Wii U virtual console), but Super Star is half the price, and I think its punchy presentation would suit Carlos more than Return to Dream Land's softer vibe.

@nate38 Ah, I don't know what kind of presentation he prefers, but really, he can't go wrong with either game. I just feel like Return to Dream Land got overlooked for various reasons, and so whether it's first or not it's still worth the $20 because it's a great game, especially if someone can take advantage of the four-player capabilities.

You all make compelling cases. I'd rather start with a more traditional game (sidescroller/platformer) in the series before I try something more unorthodox so I'm looking at Return to Dreamland (that's the most recent 3DS sidescroller right? I remember thinking that looked awesome) and Superstar. If it's good for Smash fans it should be good for me!

My bro got Rainbow Canvas Course Curse Star or whatever it's called. Loved the music and presentation but wasn't sure how I felt about the heavy touch controls. My gamepad has some hairline scratches or whatever (those rainbow colored lines) on it, which makes me wanna focus on the gamepad less.

@carlosrox Kirby's Return to Dream Land (2011) was a Wii game. It's available on the Wii U virtual console ($20). Kirby: Triple Deluxe (2014) and Kirby: Planet Robobot (2016) are 3DS games. These three games are all pretty similar, so don't worry too much about "which one to get." But I still say go for Kirby Super Star first anyway

I enjoyed the Severed demo on the Vita at Best Buy. I'll pick it up eventually.

I also think that I got Gurumin for free on Steam? So I wouldn't mind ponying up for a copy. Eventually.

Canvas Curse is pretty cool. I don't necessarily think of it as a "Kirby game", though.
