I'm still a little bitter at Nintendo for putting this game on the black & white Game Boy instead of the NES where it belonged in full, glorious color.
Are you playing Super Metroid next? Would be a cool chaser to Metroid 2 since it follows directly in the story.
Thanks for taking the time to answer my question! Yeah, I've played and beat Super Metroid next, but forgot to make a post about it. I'll do that soon!
There was a boss in Prime 2 that does the same thing. It was the worm-hydra thing. But that game makes it pretty obvious that you're supposed to be eaten.
Yeah, but then we wouldn't have gotten the much cooler-looking, now-iconic Varia Suit design. That upgrade was specifically created to look that way to make up for the lack of color. I've said it before, and I'll say it again; some of Nintendo's best innovations have come from hardware restrictions.
@GameDadGrant That's the first time I've heard that and I'm not sure what lack of color has to do with it, but OK. I still refuse to play my games in B&W.
When added to the standard Power Suit, the Varia provides extra (red-orange) armor. In the original Metroid the Varia Suit would turn Samus' armor pink, but a design change was made in Metroid II, as the Game Boy used a monochrome system.
The Super Gameboy adds a bit of color to the game. It makes Samus appear in her trademark yellow and orange colors. The rest of the world is basically different shades of blue. Which actually works out okay...so long as you don't mind blue-colored lava.
The Game Boy Color adds even more colour to the game than the Super Game Boy, though still not as much as an NES or GBC game. Still, sure beats pea soup!
Yeah, the trade off for lack of colors was larger, more detailed sprite work for Samus and the various enemies. Thankfully Super Metroid came along and gave us the best of both worlds.
EDIT I'm with you on the idea of a "Zero Mission" level remake for Return of Samus, though! I'd totally be down for that.
I think I'm gonna play and finish this before Super Metroid comes out. I've never finished it. The lack of a map always gave me pause, just like with the original Metroid.
