Holding out for a hero on Wii U this holiday season?
With Link stuck in the Lost Woods and Team Star Fox delayed by asteroids who will pick up our dreams and carry us through the long winter nights?
Step forward, Sir Mario of Tennis.

Okay so the hype factor is low and there have been minimal details. Like bare minimal. Like the one thing we know is there are Mega Mushrooms; possibly the lamest, tacked-on gimmick Mario has ever pulled. I could hear your collective eyes roll when they revealed it.
But with a month to go before release some deets have started slipping out. Most interestingly, some game modes:

Knockout Challenge: Tense tiebreak matches against increasingly difficult computer-controlled opponents await in this single-player mode. If the going gets too tough, you can call in a supported amiibo as your doubles partner.

Mega Battle: Your character grows to gigantic proportions after grabbing a Mega Mushroom, dominating the court with their increased power and range. When rivals on both sides of the net are giant-sized, anything can happen!

Classic Tennis: For those who prefer their tennis a little more traditional, Classic Tennis offers two variations: Standard mode features Chance Shots and Jump Shots but no Mega Mushrooms, while Simple puts competitors between the tramlines with no Chance Shots or power-ups – a real test of tennis prowess.

Online multiplayer: Go up against distant adversaries from all over the world in competitive ranked play in either Mega Battle or Classic Tennis modes, or quickly jump into more casual matches. Two players on the same console can team up to take on all-comers, or a supported amiibo can join you on as your doubles partner on the online courts.

So the game is online. IT’S 2 PLAYER CO-OP online! That’s tasty.
Also tasty is that local 2 player competitive will embrace the Wii U gamepad rather than split the screen.

How to slice a Peach.

Hey, we need a Direct, no doubt about it, and that Direct needs to show us lots of content but for the time being I think the videos look super smooth and we know that Camelot are capable so I’m staying posi. How about you?

Don't get it. It stinks. The original Mario Power Tour (or whatever the hell it's called) on Gamecube was good, though.

Honestly, if all you want is some online HD tennis, this game might not be too bad. I saw an HD video of it somewhere, and it looked surprisingly nice and clean.

As for Friend matches, if this game is as DOA as everyone is predicting, it should be easy enough to play friends. Just search for a match at the same time. They'll be the only other person searching!

That's hilarious and depressing all at the same time.

And, too late! I found NEW PLAY POWER TENNIS THINGY for £4 (roughly a coffee and a doughnut) last night so I'll be tennising in some form over the weekend.

aaaaaaaaaaand, I 'm done.

Welp time to trade in.

I wish this was a joke.

@Super_Conzo I still can't tell if you're joking. Did you really find a problem with the game in 40 seconds that made you want to trade it in?

@Mop it up
Bit of an exaggeration on my part. I got it for Christmas and have played maybe 2 hours since then. The mechanics are solid (I mean they gotta be, Camelot have been doing this long enough) and it looks darn pretty. It's just so frickin bare, there's nothing to pull me into it. The budget must have been slashed for this one as the Wii U died it's death.

So I played the AI on expert and they weren't much of a challenge. I dipped online and that's a mixed bag. Either a toddler who runs left and right and lets you serve aces all day or some ligit expert who's playing a game you can't fathom.

No friend matches so there's no point me asking if any of you have this. I think I need to force someone into some local play. That's really all that is left here. Very disappointing.
