The first original Fatal Frame game to be released outside of Japan since the PS2.

Have you played any of the other ones? The original 3 on the PS2 have some of the heaviest horror atmosphere I've ever played. Even when you are just wandering around the sense of dread you feel is amazing. Having not really seen much gameplay footage of this I can't say for sure if it will be as tense but I sure hope so.

I always wondered why Nintendo bought into the franchise rights of this series. Seems a pretty weird thing. I mean getting an exclusive horror franchise (that is still pretty solidly horror) is cool and all but for awhile there they seemed fairly happy to let it languish in Japan.

Got my Limited Edition in the mail today. Lovely poster, steel case and art book, and the spirit photos were neat too, I suppose.

Played through the first two chapters, the tutorial, and I like it so far. These two missions weren't exactly ideal in terms of horror because of the constant interruptions by how-to-play info, but the second one still managed to scare me a bit. Ghosts, man. They freak me out.

Just like with Project Zero 2: Wii Edition, I adore the visual designs, I find the sounds to be pretty effective, the voice acting is good, and I think they build up some pretty sweet atmosphere overall, so I think it's all quite promising going forward. I really like using the GamePad as a real life Camera Obscura, but I need to see more than the one tutorial style battle I got before I decide if those mechanics are as good as what we got in the last game (and frankly, that's a lot to live up to IMO), and the general movement during exploration had somehow turned even clunkier than in the Wii game. I've upped the sensitivity a lot, and things seem to have improved, but something about it is still a tad off.

Too tired to keep going tonight, but I can't wait to shut off the lights and put on my headphones tomorrow evening! It's been a while since I got a proper scare!

Beat the game last night. I think it's a very good horror game, and I enjoyed it all the way through, but it's sadly inferior to Project Zero 2 on the Wii in every single way. Well, except for the graphics. I appreciate Tecmo trying new stuff (not to mention giving me a new game in the series in the first place) but the end result doesn't feel as polished as the previous masterpiece.

They've got a great, atmospheric setting in the Hikami mountain region with many creepy locales, but they don't manage to tie them all together very well, and the mission style progression lessens the feeling of exploration and the survival horror aspects. The missions also get pretty formulaic after a while, which hurts the suspense quite a bit. The GamePad should have been the perfect Camera Obscura controller, but switching back and forth between running and snapping pictures got so clunky that I actually turned it off and went dual analog instead. The combat system felt less tactical and clever than it used to too, with upgrades and different lenses having less of an impact on your performance.

All this being said, I'm still very happy with the game. It scared the living crap out of me on several occasions, practically always had me feeling nervous, the water theme and the larger outdoor environments are both great ideas, and there's a decent amount of content in there. Also, the ghost of the tall woman is some of the creepiest ish ever. Who the hell is that? What do they want? Why are the always watching me?!! Nightmare fuel. Love it!

Isn't that Tall Ghost just the creepiest?

It sure works for me! Like when I went rummaging through the books and papers in the second floor study in the veiled house and caught her looking at me through the window. Or when I heard her voice adressing me while out and about in the forest. Creeps me out, big time.
