Apparently paralogues scale with what chapter you're on. This made getting Ryoma's kid practically impossible for me because it was the last one I did late in the game. I had to use a few warp rods because the person was dying in one turn.

If you're really having trouble you should team up your S ranked characters. Assuming you're playing Birthright you can always scout more missions to grind affinity.

I'm on chapter 21, with my core party (Corrin, Orochi, Sakura, Felicia, Azura, Ryoma, Takumi, Setsuna, Silas, Ryoma, Hinota, Oboro, Rinkah, Kaze, and Hinoka) all promoted (the exceptions being Azura and Felicia because they can't promote without reclassing). It's still challenging, but the last three chapters were cake compared to this one.

Mozu was totally Nephenee-like, but I had promoted her to a Weapons Master instead of Spear Master (or whatever it's called). So she never got to use the best spears. But she definitely had some boss stats at the end.
I made Oboro a Spear Master when she promoted, and she's a monster. She's probably my best unit (aside from Ryoma) even with limited weapon capacity...but an excellent unit. I've tried working with Mozu, but I've not been able to grind her up to par.

I think Mozu would end up with better stats if you did work on her. She had 30 levels as a villager whereas Oboro's first class would only have 20. And Mozo probably has better stat gains since they always put in a super weak character that ends up super powerful in all Fire Emblem games.

@gojira

My Mozu stinks. I keep using her anyway but her stat progression is AWFUL. She often gets one or two stat gains which aren't even good ones. Boo

Oh I know, it's akin to how Donnel was in Awakening...I just don't have the patience to build her up. Still, Oboro is a beast and I wouldn't trade her.

@VofEscaflowne

That's unfortunately a downside of RNG. The first time I played through Radiant Dawn my Nephenee was a God. But when I played through a second time for the game club she was still strong, but not quite the Juggernaut of my first play through.

@ludist210

Are you playing Birthright or Conquest? I tended to grind for grinding's sake in Birthright so I leveled up all my characters pretty much. But I can definitely see not wanting to spend time in Conquest. I rarely got those 'diamond in the rough,' or whatever you want to call them, characters up to usable.

@gojira

I still have plenty of useful characters at least. Kaden is nearly unstoppable. He can still take a beating from physical weapons but his resists make him nearly invincible against casters. Plus his regenerating health and insane counters makes him a great unit to throw into the middle of battle if you know he'll survive.

I have a good Mozu. Got her as a Merchant and now she's sniffing out Gold Bars regularly, which is a fun side-effect. She's pretty potent thanks to Aptitude nabbing her some good level ups.

I'm less than thrilled with how the game has treated two of my favorites, Setsuna and Orochi. They both have gotten a lot of lousy level ups just from chance, even though I like to use them because I like them as characters (and, er, I married Orochi).

What do you guys think of the Private Quarters feature? I think it's a bit silly, with the wife kinda leaning in for a smooch directly at the player. That extends to the super-anime hot springs embarrassment cliche too. Sometimes this series gets...weird lately.

@TriforceBun

Private quarters thing is a bit weird but you can skip it entirely if you want, right? Is there any benefit to bonding with units? I don't think I've seen it do anything aside from getting an accessory one time from bonding with Corrin's wife...

@VofEscaflowne

Yeah my Kaden was pretty strong in the end. He was definitely one of my front line units.

@TriforceBun

Her finding gold bars combined with the second Merchant skill, spendthrift, makes her even stronger.

I was a little underwhelmed by the Private Quarters. They really felt the need to take it out for characters other than who you marry? Unless I missed something they only risque part is touching someone's face a bit to wake them up.

@gojira

I'm in Birthright. I take Mozu and Hayato on all of my grind missions, but I just haven't invested time in them like I should have. Meh. I did finally get Hana promoted though.

I'm now on Chapter 22.

Chapter 12 Birthright - hated how you have to basically sit back and wait while you funnel Corrin over to the escape point. You literally can't take two steps from the starting point or else Xander comes in and wrecks your shit.

Hate to complain, cause I'm loving the game. I lost two characters though and decided better to keep going without them. RIP Kaze and Subaki.

@ludist210
Im gonna try my best to level up those two young'uns. Mozu seems EXTREMELY weak though. Gonna be a rough ride.

Once she can use steel lances, she's a little easier to use. Team her with someone strong and she'll rack up EXP pretty quickly.

You can also forge stronger E and/or D rank weapons to help them in their early levels.

I'm playing through Conquest right now and I'm really liking it much more than Birthright. I feel like I'm zipping right through it and am a bit worried I won't get to experience everything because you can't grind, but overall I do like it more. The story from this angle is more interesting and even though I'm playing on casual, it still feels like an older Fire Emblem because even if a person doesn't die permanently they do lose out on exp.

I got to a point in Conquest where I was wondering if it was worth it to unlock children. There's no free battles in the game to grind relationships so I decided to pair up a few characters and try to get a couple of kids. But since the paralogues figts to get the kids are extra battles I've been using those to build relationships and get more kids. It's been a nice cycle. The only problem is now I have even more characters to choose from. And there's only so much fighting and XP to go around.

I like how they made the General kinda ridiculously powerful in this game due to Wary Fighter and then make it so you can recruit one who actually has decent resistance.

Basically, if you recruit Benny just feed him a set of boots and promote him to a general and watch him just wall the heck out of everything.

I've been pretty happy with Effie so far. I've avoided Benny because he's mean looking.

@gojira You can't argue with results though!

@pokepal148

Especially with these newer games where you can not have perma-death and whatnot, I don't really worry about straight stats. I was running an almost 100% female army every battle in Conquest until I decided I wanted children.
