Earthbound Beginnings (Mother) Review (Nintendo NES) (8.0)  by

Finally, Mother 1 is released in North America.

I'm guessing most of us have never played this game before, but for those who have: any beginner's advice? For example, I'd tell someone playing Earthbound on SNES for the first time to keep the characters' default names. Are there any weird little tidbits we should know going into this one?

From what I hear, it's kinda like SNES Earthbound but not as good... but should still be worth playing! Personally, I'm really relieved that Nintendo localized this one before Mother 3, despite the demand being for Mother 3 first. Gotta play the first game before the third one!

I'm trying to get back into this but I just got my third character who again starts at level 1. I'm trying to get her up to a level where she can at least survive for a bit, she has already 1 hit died like 5 times.

There's some backtracking involved, but if you have the Onyx Hook on you, use it to warp to Magicant and put Shirley in what's pretty much the best gear in the game (the priciest coin and armwear they have, plus the H20 Pendant). It's not too pricey and she'll be significantly tougher (and will toughen up further in the escape from Magicant).

Again, no idea what a Onyx Hook is but I certainly do not have one.

You get it by fighting an easy enemy in the Crystal Cavern (the cave with the sleeping dragon). It'll be down a ladder you didn't check near the exit.

It's optional but REALLLLLLLLY useful.

You will be returning to Magicant in a couple hours of gameplay and will leave the same way you did last time. I definitely recommend picking up the Onyx Hook where ploot mentioned it when you're back down there.

In the meantime, you may have a tough time keeping Ana alive, but the enemies shouldn't be TOO ridiculously hard in the next couple hours. Just gotta be persistent and get past those early levels.

Started playing this the other day! It's definitely a grind, but I'm liking it for what it is so far... mainly because it reminds me of Earthbound SNES, haha. It's relentless with the random battles sometime! During my trek out of the cemetery, I couldn't take two steps without running into a zombie.
